Hello, true believers! Welcome to Negative World's newest RPG-centric Club Hub, springing off the heels of the Fire Emblem Club. Way back when, Nintendo Power introduced a monthly walkthrough / in depth Role Play Game section (right around the beefiest SNES RPG era), but since they aren't around anymore to use it, Negative World will bring it out of the ashes, dust it off, and roll with it (two things of note: #1, this is not in reaction to Nintendo Force Magazine at all -- I know that because I thought of it in the shower this morning, so THERE; and #2, I just looked up "Epic Center RPG" on Yahoo, and there is apparently another RPG-based site that has that, ugh. I guess we're looking at a "Ghostbusters" / "Real Ghostbusters" thing now... Whatever..).

For anyone who grew playing SNES RPGs, and were a fan of them, they surely resonated to the point where they still hold office as some of your favorite games of your entire videogame life, systems, generations, and decades later. The NW Epic Center (run primarily by myself, with the aid of some special friends occasionally) will help to expose some of those games that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved, and also to relive some of the greatest games EVER as we play through them again -- together -- and open up a whole new dialogue on these lost treasures.

Next up..

Chrono Trigger is held by many (myself included) as The Greatest RPG of All Time, pun not intended. It is a benchmark title in the genre, and even after 20 years the game is discussed daily and held in high regard, even in the face of juiced-up, HD "masterpieces." Is simpler sometimes better? Sure, but we're not talking "Dragon Warrior" simple here; we're talking 16-bit perfection at its finest. I'm personally a bit worried about pursuing this game once more; it's been a long time since my last jog through it, and I'm afraid I might have the rosiest pair of glasses that any shot of nostalgia could ever produce. We find out later this month, for better or for worse. (C'mon, it's gonna be fine -- we're talking Chrono Trigger here!! THE BEST, JERRY, THE BEST!!)

Sunday, August 30th marks the start of Week 1 (if you prefer to start your own quest AFTER Sunday, like Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, thats fine!). Golden Sun ran 6 Weeks. GameDadGrant will be our DUNGEON MASTER for this one, and we figure the playthrough to run about the same length. Less than two months. I'm told the total quest should last you between 20 and 30 hours.

See ya soon!!

@Zero

I always give Paula my strongest defensive stuff at the time. The best charms, etc. Thankfully, her Ribbons are among the best equips in the game by a good margin, and somewhat help her low HP.

@TriforceBun@TriforceBun I don't know if this is true or not, but it seems like enemies target her the most.

Dang it, not gonna finish this week on time. I'm still in Saturn Valley, so hopefully I'm not too far behind. Gonna try hard to make it up this next week.

With Jeff now joining your party, the freeing of Threed from the zombie menace at the hands of Master Belch and meeting the unusual Mr. Saturns, your party heads for the big city of Fourside. What dangers await you in the big city? Well you'll see as this is easily the longest of the weeks and maybe the most confusing. This week also features my personal favorite area in the game, and hopefully you guys will like it to. If you can find it. You will also gain maybe the game's most useful non-battle PSI power and I know that many of you will be thrilled to see it show up. So good luck and don't let the corrupt mayor of Fourside get you down.

EARTHBOUND EPIC CENTER

Week 4: Big City Nights

Goal: Collect the Fourth Song; Save in Summers

Optional Challenge: Find the black and white sesame seeds; Find the contact lenses in the Desert and return them to their owner

Convenient Grinding Location(s): Criminal Caterpillars in Dusty Dunes Desert; Rainy Circle Cave

Oh, I already finished week 4 by the way. Like a week ago. So I guess you can put me down as finished.

Week 4 is... interesting.

Found the sesames, the contact lenses and returned them. For an additional challenge, find the $1000.00 treasure chest in the desert and win a PSI Caramel in the "slot machine" before spending all of it!

@DeputyVanHalen
I guess it's a good thing you have restore points to help you then. If you're grinding in the Threed graveyard, bring insecticide sprays with you. I don't believe they rely on any stats and they usually one-shot any and all bugs in the battle

Played while watching football this afternoon and finished off week 4. It amazes me just how much of the weird stuff in this game I've forgotten about it. I'm thinking my favorite weird thing in this game, Dungeon Man, should be coming up soon now.
09/23/13, 00:18
Let's see, I made it through the mine (hint: Moles are weak to PSI Flash and PSI Freeze), and through Moonside. Now I'm going back to the desert to fetch Apple Kid's latest invention (thanks Escargo Express Neglected Class).

This game still puts a smile on my face.

@TriforceBun

WOW, I wouldn't even have thought of that. Had he had an ATM Card, I may've attempted it.
But yeah, that seems as if it would've taken a long time, sir.

I took the UFO deal BY ACCIDENT (everything else in the game, you gotta click on it, but that you just *shwoop!* right in?) before fully exploring the lab area. Did I miss something?? Crawling skin, I hate the thought.

--Sooo, I've fallen behind in Week 3. I remembered late on Saturday that I hadn't drilled it at all. BAGH. Hopefully I'll catch up soon.

Anyway, I'm on my way to Saturn Valley (might be there in 10 minutes), and I haven't seen Belch at all yet. I thought FOR SURE that he would've been done already. Did I miss something? CAN I miss something? (Did the Fly Paper stuff already, and beat the little dude talking about the Honey Jar Something. Where is the boss?)

@Mop it up

Now that you mention it, someone (and it may've been Zero..) was running away a lot in Phantasy Star IV (right?) and it hurt him (or her) with the progression of the game. Sometimes you just gotta hang in there! Is there a REAL penalty to dying though? You lose some money (which -- why even bring it with you? You rarely need it away from an ATM machine), and you retain all of your XP. Dig it?

@Mr_Mustache

There's not much to do in Winters just as Jeff, so don't worry. You'll be back soon enough with the rest of your party.

And you're on the way to Belch if you're just now getting to Saturn Valley.

@Mr_Mustache That's not what hurt my progression in Phantasy Star IV. It was poor game design, for sure.

I only run in RPGs when there is literally no other option besides death.
09/23/13, 22:07
@Mr_Mustache@ludist210

Yeah, I don't think there was anything upstairs in the lab in Winters. Maybe a gift box containing a minor food item or something. And you're still on the right track regarding Threed.

To those who finished last week's Threed run, what'd you think of the crazy point where you have to wait three minutes behind Grapefruit Falls? And the coffee break?
09/24/13, 01:10
@TriforceBun I went to the bathroom during the waiting behind the falls part, lol. Don't quite remember the coffee break though?
09/24/13, 01:15
@TriforceBun I hate that part, its level of tedium is right up there with the Paper Mario series.
09/24/13, 01:26
@TriforceBun
Not a fan of that part.
09/24/13, 01:27
@ludist210

Yeah, I found that SV was a lot smaller (at least now?) than I expected it to be. I thought it'd be a full-fledged town. Kinda caught me offguard. And I already found the waterfall spot and I was curious why I couldn't advance. I know have the Secret Password so I should be able to do just fine there. Will play EB tonight during MNF on DVR. SHH.

@Zero

Poor game design? Why? I thought it was designed well, and I played through that game just fine. Maybe it was because I had played PSII first? You'd be crawling up a wall with that game if PSIV is no good for you.
09/24/13, 01:39
@Mr_Mustache Didn't balance enemy levels and player levels well at all.
09/24/13, 01:46
@Zero

You're speaking gibberish to me. I understand you had an issue with that, I never once felt underleveled (besides fighting the Bonus Ranch Worm, and the occasional boss). If you're getting tossed by the regular enemies, yes, your level is too low. Like those Oak guys here. They were roughing me up pretty good. And those GD mushrooms. Oh, and the bosses that I have to re-do 4-5 times each. I crushed the Tent in one shot though.

In closing: this game doesn't balance enemy levels and player levels well at all.

Exactly, and when it happens all the time, the game is balanced poorly.

I'd agree with that. The major difference, to me, is that you don't lose all progress when you die in Earthbound. So I don't have to feel like I wasted a bunch of time every time I die, I'm in better shape to attack whatever I was attacking by the time I get back there.
