Hello, true believers! Welcome to Negative World's newest RPG-centric Club Hub, springing off the heels of the Fire Emblem Club. Way back when, Nintendo Power introduced a monthly walkthrough / in depth Role Play Game section (right around the beefiest SNES RPG era), but since they aren't around anymore to use it, Negative World will bring it out of the ashes, dust it off, and roll with it (two things of note: #1, this is not in reaction to Nintendo Force Magazine at all -- I know that because I thought of it in the shower this morning, so THERE; and #2, I just looked up "Epic Center RPG" on Yahoo, and there is apparently another RPG-based site that has that, ugh. I guess we're looking at a "Ghostbusters" / "Real Ghostbusters" thing now... Whatever..).

For anyone who grew playing SNES RPGs, and were a fan of them, they surely resonated to the point where they still hold office as some of your favorite games of your entire videogame life, systems, generations, and decades later. The NW Epic Center (run primarily by myself, with the aid of some special friends occasionally) will help to expose some of those games that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved, and also to relive some of the greatest games EVER as we play through them again -- together -- and open up a whole new dialogue on these lost treasures.

Next up..

Chrono Trigger is held by many (myself included) as The Greatest RPG of All Time, pun not intended. It is a benchmark title in the genre, and even after 20 years the game is discussed daily and held in high regard, even in the face of juiced-up, HD "masterpieces." Is simpler sometimes better? Sure, but we're not talking "Dragon Warrior" simple here; we're talking 16-bit perfection at its finest. I'm personally a bit worried about pursuing this game once more; it's been a long time since my last jog through it, and I'm afraid I might have the rosiest pair of glasses that any shot of nostalgia could ever produce. We find out later this month, for better or for worse. (C'mon, it's gonna be fine -- we're talking Chrono Trigger here!! THE BEST, JERRY, THE BEST!!)

Sunday, August 30th marks the start of Week 1 (if you prefer to start your own quest AFTER Sunday, like Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, thats fine!). Golden Sun ran 6 Weeks. GameDadGrant will be our DUNGEON MASTER for this one, and we figure the playthrough to run about the same length. Less than two months. I'm told the total quest should last you between 20 and 30 hours.

See ya soon!!

@VickiL

That..can't be. My first Counter was "40," and now I'm like "50." Why would it do that? Also, looking at some of my older game files (I have 2 others), they're LOWER than what I'm at now. That...just can't be.

Your other folks, what do you have them set to? I have them at the 2x2 spot from the top. I think it is "Attack / Approach," with a charge Level of 1. CPU Girl ("Liz") has yet to die period, and she was ALWAYS the one disappointing us way back when with her untimely deaths. I've been keeping an eye like a hawk on HP levels though. The Sprite's ("Nikki") initial death came quickly and without warning.

Also, Doom Eye; still one of the most annoying enemies. I said to Nikki, "these guys are a bitch," and it was WORSE than I remembered. I can't tell you how many times were we Moogled!!

Setting out now, Underground Palace length TBA soon!

EDIT- Week 1 complete! U.P. takes less than 20 minutes from your closest save point.
Week 1: 2 hours, 45 minutsh.

I've also watched my sprite die. As soon as I stepped out of the cave he got "whacked" to death! Thankfully, staying at the inn resurrects party members. Otherwise, death is kinda expensive.

I'm also curious, did anyone else give their sprite a boy's name ("Miko" for mine)?

Heading into the Haunted Forest now. Then... grindin'. Yay!
03/11/13, 21:47
Ok, so grinding first. Jeesum Crow! That was a lot of death. My minions seem to like to stand directly in front of the Chobin Hoods and just take it in the face. Over. And over. And over. Distance weapons it shall be for the likes of those two!

Anyway, while I was playing around with equipping different weapons to take out the little menaces I noticed that weapons level up only as high as the number of orbs you have for that particular weapon. So, if you want to get any party member's weapon proficiencies maxed (or even just well balanced), make sure that each time a character's weapon prof. hits the current max, you switch to a new weapon. Versatility, baby! Hope this helps someone.

@Jew Drop

My friend Matt was always the Sprite, and I think I used to name him as such when playing then. I always thought the Sprite was a girl growing up, and we were like "he??" when they mentioned it one time. I mean, clearly the girl is a girl, but the sprite is kind of ambiguous.

Chobin Hoods were annoying this time. Very annoying.

YES, so true about the Orbs. I thought it was depending on your Mana Power, but it is NOT. Intriguing!

Nikki has been using the Whip a little bit when not sloshing folks with the Spear. That thing has some RANGE.

So, I hit a glitch yesterday that totally killed my mood to play. My stupid Purim got stuck above a cliff while I went below down the stairs. I figured she'd follow but it turns out she's too dumb. So when I tried to go back to get her, the game wouldn't let me. It only lets you move X amount from your team and well, my team was too stupid to go an extra pixel to the left and thus make their way around the cliff. Quite a disappointment. I figured it was enough for the night since I'd lose my progress.

03/12/13, 12:57
@DrFinkelstein It didn't let you select her with the Select button? I don't think the game comes out and says you can do that but you can control her (unless you couldn't and it was seriously a glitch).
03/12/13, 15:54
I wondered if I could but no, it wasn't at all obvious or even kinda apparent. I thought you could only play as them with another player maybe. Damn.
03/12/13, 16:20
@PogueSquadron
@DrFinkelstein

Yeah, I think SELECT may've got you out of that situation. Still, that stinks. Sorry, bud.

Any other progress to report on? How long are you guys playing per sitting? No one else has finished yet?
03/12/13, 22:20
What direction do I go once Purim joins me? I think I'm lost.
03/12/13, 22:24
@DrFinkelstein

I think she said something about going to the Haunted Forest (sooo..UP UP UP -- walking North for a bit -- from where that picture was taken in Gaia's Navel.). Remember to use your Sword to mow down breakable obstacles (grass, flowers, switches, etc.), basically anything that looks out of sort.

If you get confused, check this other spoiled out thing here:

BREAK IN EMERGENCY:
There are some Gold Skull Pillar deals in the Haunted Forest. When you try to cut them down with a Sword (MANDATORY -- or maybe you CAN go through the Underground towards the Dwarf thing against her will? I initially did this, but then I was getting ahead of myself. I like to explore in RPGs, often going where I'm NOT supposed to go first to see if I can find anything extra.), she'll tell you that your Sword won't work, and you'll need an Axe (I remembered that I needed an Axe to cut those down, and I didn't trigger her talking -- why would I cut down something that a Sword can't cut? This led to some momentary confusion..).

You can find an Axe from the Dwarves who know about weapons there. They know about weapons. And have good weapons. The Dwarf Place, of course, it through the "heart" of Gaia's Navel, going down down down..concentric circles..from where pictured.

Yeah, once you get the girl, the next goal they want you to go is Gaia's Navel. She'll want you to go to the Haunted Forest, but I think you need that axe before you go. There's some sequence breaking involved apparently, but they want you to go to Gaia's Navel. You basically go there and keep going round and round until you get to the 'bottom' of Gaia's Navel and make your way through the cave.

More spoilery - The girl will leave your party because she wants to go to the Haunted Forest to rescue Dyluck. After you get the Sprite, you need to go get the witch's help. I think they say to go there because you need ice magic, and she could be of service. The girl will rejoin you once you head to the Haunted Forest with the Sprite.

It may not be a bad idea to switch your character now and then. For instance, my girl sucks right now. I can keep her out of harm's way more easily by taking control of her. That has had mixed results, but it was helpful when grinding.

I've finished the week. I forgot how horribly annoying this game can be. If your characters get cornered by an enemy or two, they can be dead in seconds, because enemies won't even give you a chance to recover. My girl was armorless (GO GET THE KUNG FU DRESS AND OTHER ARMOR FOR HER), so she died a LOT. I had to do some grinding in the Underground Palace, which was pretty annoying. If you're playing this on Virtual Console - play conservatively. You don't have a Save State feature to save your ass in the event that you lose a lot of leveling up progress. It's tempting to just keep leveling because your characters will heal after they level up, but just try to save whenever possible. It's a bitch to have to keep buying Cups of Wishes, but it's kind of mandatory while your characters are weak.

@PogueSquadron

Is that what happened to you?? Wow, she never left me, but I went to the Forest first. Neat?

--Kung Fu Dress is the strongest armor available for ANY character this week. I -think- it was in Kippo?

@DrFinkelstein

I PUT myself in this situation tonight. SELECT will totally get you out. Happy travels!

If you want to be really effecient (maybe cheap?), you'll find yourself taking control of that Sprite a lot. It's a necessity for grinding and boss battles IMO, but I think that's just because I'd rather hit the Y button once to bring up my magic than hit the X button to bring up the magic of a party member.
03/13/13, 08:43
For some reason, my family would have the habit of naming the characters after musicians. Most common growing up was Elvis, Madonna and Sting. I think I currently have my party named Bowie, Adele and Mikey.

As expected, my week has been crazy and I haven't even touched this since Sunday night. I think Thursday may work out for me. I'm making white pizza for White Day, and the dough has to rise for over an hour. Sounds like Mana time to me! That should allow me to finish up and/or grind.

All I managed to do in DQ V this week was wander around aimlessly for five minutes while half asleep and get hopelessly lost. Zoom saved me, though! I swear, getting old sucks. I still manage to get in about 25 hours of video game time, but it is all weekend. How I long for the old days of no responsibilities.
03/13/13, 16:38
Planning to (re) start this when I get home for lunch. I say (re) start because I played through a few hours several years ago, but I didn't get very far.

As for FFXIII-2, I'm somewhere in Episode 4 (of 6, I believe). I heard it's a lot shorter than XIII (which took me over 100 hours to Platinum).
03/13/13, 17:51
So made it to Pandora. Do I go find Jema or do I plow ahead to Gaia's Navel?
03/13/13, 20:05
Oh man, I'm falling behind with this already! I'm away the next 4 days but WILL catch up next week.
03/13/13, 20:14
@VickiL

What is White Day?

**A NOTE ABOUT GRINDING (FOR EVERYONE)**

If you're trying to level up your magic, note that it doesn't matter WHICH spell you use from your set. As long as you're using that..geez, I don't even know what to call them, you'll go up. So, obviously, in the interest of time/resources, you should use your LOWEST MP spell when grinding. Using a more expensive spell does NOTHING for you.

Furthermore, I found out that when using the Girl's spells, it is best to do it when in the field with the Sprite as you get only get HALF XP (for spells) when weapons are NOT drawn. Way back when, I'm sure people would sleep and then just cast Remedy-Remedy-Remedy... and sleep again. Folks doing that were actually making their grindfest take TWICE as long. No, you don't have to walk a bunch, but you have to do twice the work.

The best place I've found so far is right next to Kippo. Inn is RIGHT there when you walk in.

@ludist210

Pandora when? Do you have any other party members?

At the end of the week, you should have:
-All 3 party members
-All of the weapons
-Two magic..entities?

Once you get that last bullet, week over. Feel free to grind, and sleep at Pandora if you must.

@Cube191

C'mon, Cube! It's less than 3 hours, bud!
03/13/13, 23:09
@Mr_Mustache

No, it's just me so far. I have a spear and a rusty sword. I've gotten father before (maybe got my third party member), but it's been a loooong time.
03/13/13, 23:11
@ludist210

You're still in Pandora? I think Jema tells you to go to Water Palace or something?

Were you asking for help/advice, or more of a "should I stay or should I go nowwwww?"
