Hello, true believers! Welcome to Negative World's newest RPG-centric Club Hub, springing off the heels of the Fire Emblem Club. Way back when, Nintendo Power introduced a monthly walkthrough / in depth Role Play Game section (right around the beefiest SNES RPG era), but since they aren't around anymore to use it, Negative World will bring it out of the ashes, dust it off, and roll with it (two things of note: #1, this is not in reaction to Nintendo Force Magazine at all -- I know that because I thought of it in the shower this morning, so THERE; and #2, I just looked up "Epic Center RPG" on Yahoo, and there is apparently another RPG-based site that has that, ugh. I guess we're looking at a "Ghostbusters" / "Real Ghostbusters" thing now... Whatever..).

For anyone who grew playing SNES RPGs, and were a fan of them, they surely resonated to the point where they still hold office as some of your favorite games of your entire videogame life, systems, generations, and decades later. The NW Epic Center (run primarily by myself, with the aid of some special friends occasionally) will help to expose some of those games that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved, and also to relive some of the greatest games EVER as we play through them again -- together -- and open up a whole new dialogue on these lost treasures.

Next up..

Chrono Trigger is held by many (myself included) as The Greatest RPG of All Time, pun not intended. It is a benchmark title in the genre, and even after 20 years the game is discussed daily and held in high regard, even in the face of juiced-up, HD "masterpieces." Is simpler sometimes better? Sure, but we're not talking "Dragon Warrior" simple here; we're talking 16-bit perfection at its finest. I'm personally a bit worried about pursuing this game once more; it's been a long time since my last jog through it, and I'm afraid I might have the rosiest pair of glasses that any shot of nostalgia could ever produce. We find out later this month, for better or for worse. (C'mon, it's gonna be fine -- we're talking Chrono Trigger here!! THE BEST, JERRY, THE BEST!!)

Sunday, August 30th marks the start of Week 1 (if you prefer to start your own quest AFTER Sunday, like Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, thats fine!). Golden Sun ran 6 Weeks. GameDadGrant will be our DUNGEON MASTER for this one, and we figure the playthrough to run about the same length. Less than two months. I'm told the total quest should last you between 20 and 30 hours.

See ya soon!!

Dropped the Dalmuhd Desert. So much sand!

@Dark Weres

The lack of playage here is sad. We'll do Ogre Battle 64 after Secret of Mana, snerts be damned.
That way, we can get some positive feelings back in here, and perhaps a broader appeal?
After a little cleansing, back to Ogre Battle 64 in 6 more weeks.

If you were planning your March and beyond around this, I sincerely apologize.

EDIT- Also, this'll give some folks a chance to COMPLETE Ogre Battle who mean to do so. As hard as you've been playing lately, I really don't think you'll be done in 13 days, no offense. Sure, you can probably do one a night, but I think you've got..I dunno, like 15 stages left. If you're doing the Sky Islands, which I think you are, your trek will be even longer than Gojira's, for instance, at least at press time..

So yes, I'm very much looking forward to Ogre Battle 64, it'd just be nice to have everyone "into" a game, and able to keep up. If you decide to play Secret of Mana with us, too (NICE!), its going to be so low impact. I can't remember how long everything takes, but I figured a 6-week program there, and we'd play up through getting the 2nd Magic set in Week 1. In my brain, it feels like 40 minutes. Its been a long time since I've played...

I've had a super busy weekend, with Valentine's Day and both my kid's and a nephew's birthday on the same day, so no playing lately. I did finish up 9, though. I've been working 6 days a week solid for a while now, so free time is not that easy to come by. I'm hoping for a bit of playtime tonight, though.

@Koovaps

Forgive me Koovaps; were you planning on playing Ogre Battle 64, too?

I ask, because if you're NOT planning on doing Secret of Mana (not exactly sure who is besides Ludist, Fink, and some others..I'm sure there will be others...), you can play through Ogre Battle and catch up for the start of Ogre Battle 64, no sweat. I'm GUESSING that we'd be on the 64 game around.. April 14th or so? Possibly the 21st. (That'll give you an additional month and a half..not saying that you should slow down though, haha!!) I really think we can dump Secret of Mana in 6 weeks, no problem. Heck, we could even escalate it as that is a game that you don't want to stop playing.

..but I also think that about Ogre Battle and Fire Emblem, so what the heck do I know?
02/18/13, 23:23
@Mr_Mustache

Yeah, I'll likely skip Secret of Mana to get through OB and be ready for OB64. Then I just have to decide to play it on the N64 or virtual console.
02/19/13, 07:02
@Koovaps

Sounds good.

I'll be playing on the 64, woo!

Secret of Mana?! Sign me up!

I'll probably do Secret of Mana. I've actually been planning on doing a 3-player sort-of-LP of it with two other Agents.
02/20/13, 18:52
How many weeks are left in this? I wonder if we could do Secret of Mana alongside Retro Game Club for March. Maybe you and sirmastersephiroth can figure something out between the two of you on how to run it.
02/20/13, 23:38
Any Ogre Battle stories?! Success? Gojira update?

@VickiL

I gotta keep a running tab in my head for now! Welcome!

@PogueSquadron

Just this week and one more after. And for Secret of Mana, I figured 6 weeks. In order to cram it in one month, you'd be playing more than most folks are comfortable doing. On average. Especially if its your first time.

I think we'd be starting on March 3rd.
02/20/13, 23:59
I've been busy with Dead Space 3 and Fire Emblem. But I'll play some OB soon.
02/21/13, 02:27
All right! Get hyped! I'll be doing a push to do at least two maps today! Just let the coffee finish brewing and I'll update this post with a live stream URL!
I hope you'll be able to hear me well enough.
Dark Weres' UStream Channel: Ogre Battle Chapter 12 and possibly more
Well, in this morning's session I did my usual strategy of liberating the temple closest to their base, keeping 2-4 flying units in the area to defend it, while the walkers and swimmers liberated the strongholds in the rest of the map. Drew two tower cards in the process, no good Fortunes or Heirophants. There was a clump of enemy units that was travelling along. Any time my high alignment units found themselves in battle, it was with one of their high-aligns, and any time my low alignment units found themselves in battle with the clump, it was with one of their low aligns. I would have just taken Winter, the unit of Skeletons, Ghosts, and Demons, to just romp them all, but there was also an annoying group of clerics mixed with Wizards and Wild Man characters, meaning I'd have to spend 6000 goth on revives for every round of battle until that group was dead if I put Winter against the clump. Meanwhile, a high-flying unit snuck past me to recapture a town on the other side of the map. 30% reputation loss right there.
RESET.
This time I was ready for the sneaky unit and bootsed an angel group over there to defend.
Then the morning sun cast too much glare on the screen for me to be able to play any further (The TV is set opposite a pair of those old fashioned windows that are impossible to hang curtains over without taping them to the wall or something, so we'll have to resume this later.

@Dark Weres

Man, you've got sexy ladies all over your "off-air" thing! And my computer took forever to load it up, haha.

SO, lets talk; are you still not buying Revives? That 6K at the Temple could be spent on 3 Revives for 3 people instead of just one, INCLUDING yoru 6K person. Temples are a huge rip, you have no reason to use 'em!

I feel bad that you guys are resetting. With the exception of one STUPID thing I did way back in Week 2, I haven't reset at all for any reason. Anyway..soooo...you're going to their base FIRST and then Liberating in your wake? Hmm.. I don't know if I can get behind that strategy, I always jsut liked the "inch up" or whatever you wanna call it where the walls slowly close in around them. I generally call it my "fence," but yeah. If you're getting so close to their base, they're probably going to focus 100% of their attack on your guys there, no doubt overwhelming you there before long. Most stages have a hidden..tripwire? where once you go beyond it, they shift their attention to that unit. I guess that kinda works if you don't want them messing with your walkers or swimmers, but to me, it sounds like you're making it more difficult on yourself.

And you say Scene 12; is it YOUR Scene 12 or the Scene 12 we have here? Since you did Muspelm, which doesn't count, the numbers are going to be off a little bit. For instance, up there it says I just finished Scene 19, but the game said Scene 23. How 'bout that!

--And I think we WILL take a break between Ogre Battle and Secret of Mana. Just a week off for any stragglers who are trying to finish this before Secret of Mana, and give us a full week for an Epic Center: Secret of Mana recruitment push. It just...it wouldn't do the game a service otherwise.
02/22/13, 20:11
Yeahhh...I never got around to finishing this because school started...
But it's on my backlog so one day I will finish it.
Sign me up for Secret of Mana though.
02/23/13, 01:35
@Mr_Mustache
I've been buying revives, I've been trying to buy about 10 of anything that might be useful, per map, just before completing it. I think I have about 800'000 Goth in my war chest at this time, since I'm actually waiting until the 7th or 8th day before finishing the map (also sending units back to base once the enemy runs out of units).
The 6 thousand was to revive 3 characters in the unit (two skeletons and a ghost) if they take on the clump while it contains the cleric group. Of course, I suppose I could chance it and hope that the cleric has "Strong" set (or her white-magic misses)

Oh yeah, and It's the Scene 12 that's listed here.

Edited: 02/23/13, 16:29
@Dark Weres

Whoa, dude. 800k is enough to buy more than 10 Revives! (I JUST hit $1M and I'm far ahead of you.) I buy like..stocks of 50 at a time! And yes, send those guys back when you don't need 'em anymore. Use a Bell to beat Noon if you can; 2k vs. 10k. Should be an easy decision!

Yeah, I just stay away from those other groups unless I'm CERTAIN they're set to Strong, which you can ONLY tell by deduction.
02/23/13, 22:22
I'll put Week 8 up later sometime. Whatevs.

--Making some progress today on LAST week. Stache Party.
02/25/13, 03:11
Finished chapters 19 and 20 today. I really shouldn't play this game in chunks. By the end of my almost 6 hours today I was getting really tired of wave after wave of the exact same enemy units. I don't mind that they are the same enemy types, but at least change up the formation so it doesn't get stale.

Sorry I've been lagging a bit behind. I thought that we were already on the final week. Not to mention other games I've been playing and being sick this weekend among other things.
02/25/13, 23:56
@gojira

Chunks no good? I try to do two a sitting if I can. Will probably do two on Friday, possibly one on Thursday night, and finish on Saturday (or OT Sunday).

Being sick is no good! Feel better! (I'll throw 8 / The End up here later for sure.)
02/26/13, 00:53
Anything else last night? Anybody else gonna finish in the vicinity of ground zero? That'd be cool.

I still haven't put up the Final / Week 8 stuff, but I don't think anyone is really gonna get there before I type it out. If you DO happen to get there, I think you're forced to do the last 3 stages in sequence.

Tonight should be the night though.. I've got NOTHIN' goin' on.
