Hello, true believers! Welcome to Negative World's newest RPG-centric Club Hub, springing off the heels of the Fire Emblem Club. Way back when, Nintendo Power introduced a monthly walkthrough / in depth Role Play Game section (right around the beefiest SNES RPG era), but since they aren't around anymore to use it, Negative World will bring it out of the ashes, dust it off, and roll with it (two things of note: #1, this is not in reaction to Nintendo Force Magazine at all -- I know that because I thought of it in the shower this morning, so THERE; and #2, I just looked up "Epic Center RPG" on Yahoo, and there is apparently another RPG-based site that has that, ugh. I guess we're looking at a "Ghostbusters" / "Real Ghostbusters" thing now... Whatever..).

For anyone who grew playing SNES RPGs, and were a fan of them, they surely resonated to the point where they still hold office as some of your favorite games of your entire videogame life, systems, generations, and decades later. The NW Epic Center (run primarily by myself, with the aid of some special friends occasionally) will help to expose some of those games that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved, and also to relive some of the greatest games EVER as we play through them again -- together -- and open up a whole new dialogue on these lost treasures.

Next up..

Chrono Trigger is held by many (myself included) as The Greatest RPG of All Time, pun not intended. It is a benchmark title in the genre, and even after 20 years the game is discussed daily and held in high regard, even in the face of juiced-up, HD "masterpieces." Is simpler sometimes better? Sure, but we're not talking "Dragon Warrior" simple here; we're talking 16-bit perfection at its finest. I'm personally a bit worried about pursuing this game once more; it's been a long time since my last jog through it, and I'm afraid I might have the rosiest pair of glasses that any shot of nostalgia could ever produce. We find out later this month, for better or for worse. (C'mon, it's gonna be fine -- we're talking Chrono Trigger here!! THE BEST, JERRY, THE BEST!!)

Sunday, August 30th marks the start of Week 1 (if you prefer to start your own quest AFTER Sunday, like Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, thats fine!). Golden Sun ran 6 Weeks. GameDadGrant will be our DUNGEON MASTER for this one, and we figure the playthrough to run about the same length. Less than two months. I'm told the total quest should last you between 20 and 30 hours.

See ya soon!!

@Mr_Mustache

The only time I do that is if I think I can recruit the boss or if I feel I may have missed something. Otherwise I'm trying to just play it naturally.

Hm, using more than one unit makes this game a LOT easier! Finished up the second act, and moving on to the third. I've got a lot of catching up to do this week, hopefully I can power through during this week...

I kinda messed up deploying units on Scene 9. I accidentally returned a couple that I didn't mean to and didn't want to pay again to depoy them. The enemy was fairly tough too. I did have my one murder unit out there to help (a unit where I put all 0 ALI chars). I was a bit stupid with the boss, but didn't really have any problems. I maybe used one or two tarot cards I didn't need to. But considering I tend to fill up I don't think it'll be a problem. Afterwards I got some cool promotions. My first Samurai, a Red Dragon and an upgraded Mermaid.

@GameDadGrant

Welcome to the chase and good luck!

@gojira

A Nixie? Solid!

Did you hire Lyon in Slums of Zenobia? His Dragons should come Red Dragon ready @ Lv7.

Forgive me if you have before, but have you put your guys back to Fighters and see what they come up to? When I was younger, I NEVER got a Ninja or a Wild Man (like, Lv6 or 7 for these guys) because I always had Fighters at Lv4 or 5, and made them Wizards or Knights. The only Samurai or Doll Mage I had was one that was awarded to me by Warren. It can be a fun project, but totally jarring when you try to promote a guy to something..and he can't. Keep an eye on that CHA. If it drops below 50, he can't be anything, and if it isn't 60, he probably can't go to a 3rd Tier.
01/22/13, 22:29
@Mr_Mustache

No, he was too expensive. I have a few Ninja and a bunch of Wild Men. A few Doll Mages as well. Oh, I promoted a couple of Clerics to Shaman as well.
01/22/13, 23:58
@gojira

Did you go back? He's only 5,000 now.

The Ninjas and Wild Men never work for me for some reason. I only have one Ninja out there, and my Wild Man ALWAYS misses. Not sure what that is about. Maybe I need to shift some other guys around..

In 8, I actually kept killing the lackeys on the boss battle, and ignoring the boss. Took me..a while.
This sounds like it might work! I usually try and liberate as many cities as early on as possible to maximize my income and Reputation gain. Because of the risk of losing cities, I end up slaughtering most troops with powerful evil units, or pouring cards into battle to weaken them as much as possible for weaker goodly units to finish off. Taking on the lackeys in boss battles, and "retreating" before my characters die might be a good way to train them up.

Witch in Front; I never had much luck with it, but a lot of folks don't like Witches, period. I've got at least one of everything in an active group right now, so if you want to use a Witch, feel free!

It also looks like witches don't grow into anything, so they're stuck with that low-% stun spell forever. Girls can't be very evil in Chapter-5-era of the Ogre Battle Saga it seems.

Yep! The Moat is indeed water. Watch how they slow down!
Ah yeah. It looks like it'd be challenging to park an octopus unit in the moat though. I might try on the next map in which such an opportunity rises.

AH yes, I figured most people are on the VC, you guys have the fake suspend feature that you can use, as you're using. --OH! If you want to stop in the middle, you can just go to the Home Menu w/o the Reset and come back to it.
I'm aware of the Wii VC's suspend feature, but most of the time I want to see the title screen when I load it up, so I'll reset before quitting. It takes away from the experience for me if I load up the game, and I see a half finished dungeon. It's like walking into the kitchen to see a half-eaten apple on the table.

@Dark Weres

One of the walkthroughs I was reading mentioned that Witches have a naturally high LUCK, and that LUCK is one of the factors that go into finding special items. He suggested that you RECRUIT a Witch, and then turn her into a Valkyrie, haha!! And yes, Witches are TOTALLY STUCK. That kinda stinks. I think they're the ONLY human class in the entire game which DOESN'T advance again. I do have a Witch that works well for me though. I have her flanked by two Wizards, and a Giant (now, I had a Golem there forever which I just moved to hang out with my Doll Mage..makes more sense, if you know what a Golem is). She Stuns half of them routinely, and they pour it on. Stunning them keeps my big guy in front alive, too. Have you made it to Mage with any of your Wizards yet? I trust that'll work even better.

Haha, that would be AWESOME to park an Octopus there, but remember, just because your Unit says "Water," that doesn't mean that the whole thing will fight better there, obviously. The Octopus will be loving it, the other guys in your unit will say "awww, come on!" I'm REALLY going to work on getting Octopus + Flying Units for Scene 9 and see how that works. Since they wont' be IN the water, no disadvantage should be incurred upon me.

Oh, yeah, that makes sense. Your way is fine, but just in a pinch know that you can hit the Home Menu just fine. Ogre Battle 64 has a Suspend feature, the first time I got to use that in a game anywhere. Pretty cool! (And then Fire Emble Path of Radiance had it to so woo.)
01/23/13, 22:28
Omigod, I am SO evil. I'm, like, the evillest dude in Evilton.

I don't even HAVE a reputation meter anymore. Just an empty display. I want to remove it from my HUD.

Oh, and I finished Week 2 like Phil Collins.

Against All Odds.
01/24/13, 05:11
@Anand

Finished Week 2? Like now you're up to Week 3? Awesome!

Get your Rep back up! Having a solid Rep while remaining EVIL is a super-challenge!
01/24/13, 05:46
I can't get my rep back up. I only have two units that are battle-ready, and I refuse to grind!
01/24/13, 05:49
In the middle of Chapter 8. Or hopefully closer to the end. I had several false starts here. I spread out too quickly and was very mismatched in some battles. I finally hung out closer to home base and found some effective units that could fight. It's costing me some money right now, since I've only liberated 2 cities so far, but I should be expanding soon. I will admit to occassional frustration, but nothing too major. I'm still loving my time with the game.

Well yeah, the one spell of Mage will be kind of watered down, but the 8 hits of unabridged octopus tentacle should make up for it.
01/24/13, 08:58
@Anand

Just put your highest ALI folks in one unit, never have 'em fight, just have 'em go town to town, Liberating. If your unit AVG is like 60+, you'll see it go up. Its better when your guys get up around 80's, and each town is a Rep "Win." Also, you don't really need to "grind;" just throw some of your dudes a bone now and then! Oh, and tell me about these battle-ready units! No one talks to me about their guys

@Koovaps

Talk to Zero, he a) doesn't believe me about money woes and/or b) has it all figured out. He's got some trick that works for him and no one else.

I think there are something like 20 guys on that stage. Are you wiping them, or are they getting away?

@Dark Weres

I dunno, that Mage spell is rock hard. Nikki was DUSTING guys with three Mages* and a Dragon; they weren't even hitting Round 2.

*- Warren is actually a Sorcerer..

EDIT- WHOA, just went to fart around with my units, and I've got 98 guys. I have room for just TWO more, be sure to delete some guys before you reach the tippy top!! (And you can probably recruit new guys of specific classes should you need to, no problem.)

...

Alright, deleted down to 90. Schwew. Also, something we haven't really touched upon yet, but about Scene 8, you should have a diverse enough group where you should be able to RECRUIT at your whim, and construct an army surrounding you. I generally tend to do things Old Fashioned, working on getting a guys' ALI/CHA to go a certain direction..but why do that when you can just BUY a new guy who is a much higher level and at the class that you'd like? I haven't recruited yet, but I'm pretty sure that the guy you recruit will be two levels lower than the recruiter. Sooo, if you've got a Lv12 Demon recruiting an Imp..he'll come out at Lv10..and probably be available for Demon instantly.

@Mr_Mustache

Thankfully, I'm mostly wiping the enemies. With the number you mention, I think I should be at least halfway through, if not a bit more. And since I do have a decent amount of bank saved up, money is not an immediate issue, but seeing my money go down a couple straight days is not cool.
01/24/13, 14:37
@Koovaps

No, definitely not cool. I made a unit of all Mermaids in preparation for Scene 9, and their deployment cost is 10,000+!! WHAT.
01/24/13, 22:37
It's hard to get back in the groove of doing the things I was doing before the convention. I'm all psyched out.
01/25/13, 02:11
@Renjaku

Get Psyched In! Whats up, dude? (Come to chat, woo!)
01/25/13, 02:59
Finished up Scene 10 tonight. I didn't really have too many problems except for the final enemy unit decided to go around away from where all the other units are and take over a couple of my towns. Bastard.
01/25/13, 06:33
Am I..reading this right? Only Gojira and people named _Mustache have completed any boards for this week? Oh my gosssh... I know Koovaps was working on 8; Zero, anything? How about my buddies back in Week 2? Yamma Hammaaaaa...

--Finished Kastolation Sea tonight, picked up Brunhild, and now I can find secret secrets. Week to be completed for myself and the Lady, tomorrow.

@gojira

Did you make him pay for his transgressions?
