Hello, true believers! Welcome to Negative World's newest RPG-centric Club Hub, springing off the heels of the Fire Emblem Club. Way back when, Nintendo Power introduced a monthly walkthrough / in depth Role Play Game section (right around the beefiest SNES RPG era), but since they aren't around anymore to use it, Negative World will bring it out of the ashes, dust it off, and roll with it (two things of note: #1, this is not in reaction to Nintendo Force Magazine at all -- I know that because I thought of it in the shower this morning, so THERE; and #2, I just looked up "Epic Center RPG" on Yahoo, and there is apparently another RPG-based site that has that, ugh. I guess we're looking at a "Ghostbusters" / "Real Ghostbusters" thing now... Whatever..).

For anyone who grew playing SNES RPGs, and were a fan of them, they surely resonated to the point where they still hold office as some of your favorite games of your entire videogame life, systems, generations, and decades later. The NW Epic Center (run primarily by myself, with the aid of some special friends occasionally) will help to expose some of those games that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved, and also to relive some of the greatest games EVER as we play through them again -- together -- and open up a whole new dialogue on these lost treasures.

Next up..

Chrono Trigger is held by many (myself included) as The Greatest RPG of All Time, pun not intended. It is a benchmark title in the genre, and even after 20 years the game is discussed daily and held in high regard, even in the face of juiced-up, HD "masterpieces." Is simpler sometimes better? Sure, but we're not talking "Dragon Warrior" simple here; we're talking 16-bit perfection at its finest. I'm personally a bit worried about pursuing this game once more; it's been a long time since my last jog through it, and I'm afraid I might have the rosiest pair of glasses that any shot of nostalgia could ever produce. We find out later this month, for better or for worse. (C'mon, it's gonna be fine -- we're talking Chrono Trigger here!! THE BEST, JERRY, THE BEST!!)

Sunday, August 30th marks the start of Week 1 (if you prefer to start your own quest AFTER Sunday, like Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, thats fine!). Golden Sun ran 6 Weeks. GameDadGrant will be our DUNGEON MASTER for this one, and we figure the playthrough to run about the same length. Less than two months. I'm told the total quest should last you between 20 and 30 hours.

See ya soon!!

I finished 5.1. I believe I only spent 25k, and I got all the treasures. It wasn't too difficult. Some tough enemies, but the smoke bombs helped get through it.

Hey, no dogging people for being behind. You yourself said it was okay to be behind during Secret of Mana (but I think that was more or less because you were a week or two behind at that point) and then reinforced that in the EarthBound EC.

@TheOldManFromZelda

Glad you got out there just fine. I'll probably get going on 5.2 tonight. You?

@ludist210

I'm not doggin', I'm bummin'!

EDIT- Related: What is the next game we're doing? Hopefully someone else will DM it. Every time I do it, it seems we have 1 or 2 people on time, and everyone else falls off the radar, and quick. Maybe it's just my imagination, maybe it's game selection, maybe it's coincidence, maybe it's me, maybe maybe maybe.. Either way, I'd prefer if someone else set weeks for next one, whatever it may be.

I wouldn't mind getting a Wii game in here like Muramasa (would we do both runs?), or Last Story, or something else entirely, so long as it is reachable via Wii or Wii U. I'd also be willing to do that Illusion of Gaia deal (bought the cartridge over a year ago now, haha), but that would require some work on eBay and an SNES.

@Mr_Mustache

I guess I'll get moving on more of it tonight. Or I'll play MH3. Not sure.

@TheOldManFromZelda

Did you get Barose?
12/31/13, 01:07
@Mr_Mustache

I did get Barose. I'm not sure I'm going to go through the rigamarole to get those spells. Seems like a lot of work.

@TheOldManFromZelda

It really isn't. If you catch Bait, just feed 'em and they drop to 1. And dumping the AP doesn't take TOO long. I just had Ryu defend, and Bow (for instance) keep casting Defense X (10 AP) until he was down there. Spar was a little tougher because of a) the high AP and b) his spells being so inexpensive. A lot tougher to drop 143 or whatever down to 0, 5 or 6 at a time.

OH, and Missile costs 26 AP to cast.

I don't understand these one on one boss fights, when the rest of your party is RIGHT THERE BEHIND YOU. It doesn't make any at all. And it's not entirely fair that the boss takes off so much energy each hit.

Whats hhappening? Nina? Just go wicked spell heavy. Freeze? I can't recall.
01/01/14, 07:45
No, it's a one on one battle btween Rand and a knight.
01/01/14, 18:23
@TheOldManFromZelda

Oh, uhhh. Did he give you trouble? I thought that guy could be dispatched PRETTY easily. Hmm.
I haven't done it yet, but I don't recall the walkthrough dude didn't make mention of any difficulty there.

--Ohhh..did you not do that Monster Island thing? (He's suggested to be Lv33, and you should do Cure 2 any time he drops below 120 HP..) He says to "be patient, and play it safe." HMM!

Still working on 5.2, spent a lot of time on Monster Island (while watching Diesel absolutely clean house in Royal Rumble '94). Haha, it wasn't exactly what I expected, but the XP and Gold yield is RIDICULOUS. Each hit they do is for about 100 hp, too, so keep that in mind. Pretty rad.

I got an ArmyGL (on a drop), not sure who, but it is BY FAR the best Shield I have right now, even after Guntz.

I finished up week 5 today. What a pain in the balls the Nina part was. At least some good equipment came out of it.

I'd say the week took me between 6-7 hours. Blah.
01/02/14, 23:42
@TheOldManFromZelda

Did you mess with Monster Island at all? Congratulations on clearing the Week!

What kind of Levels do you have? And did you do Barose stuff at all?
01/03/14, 00:14
@TheOldManFromZelda

6-7 hours for a week's worth of stuff? Stache, how many weeks is this game supposed to take? Because we can chop this down into smaller chunks if we need to...
01/03/14, 00:21
@ludist210

Everyone is stuck back in Week 2! Like it matters anymore.

We'll be done in 2 more weeks, onto another game, and nobody will care about Breath of Fire.

There's like 2 more weeks, but again, "like it matters anymore." Huge bummer, man.
I honestly can't wait until somebody picks the next game.
01/03/14, 00:23
@Mr_Mustache

I messed with Monster Island for about an hour. My normal crew peeps are around level 35-36. I didn't even bother with the Barose stuff. Just doesn't seem worth the time and effort.

I'm just gonna come out and say it: This game is the pits. It's pretty bad. But, I'm not a quitter, so I'll slog it out to the end.
01/03/14, 00:27
@TheOldManFromZelda

Sneak over to Barose after an expensive AP outing before a nap (Monster Island, I was fresh out a LOT). Fight a few Slimes, cast some Cures, whatever. Eat a Bait / Kill a guy in Battle, and you'll be good to go. The entire process can take 5 minutes.

I like the game a lot (and still so), so I can't agree with you there. Thanks for not being a quitter. Admirable.
--What do YOU want to play next? Any Wii RPG stuff leftover? Something on the VC?
01/03/14, 00:35
I have nothing in my backlog. I don't believe there are any RPGs on the VC? I'm not really sure.
01/03/14, 00:39
@TheOldManFromZelda

Is the entire Wii VC available on the Wii U? I don't even know. We've only touched one Sega game.

Did you ever do Muramasa? Last Story?
