Gunman Clive (Nintendo 3DS eShop) Review (8.1)  by

Tomorrow will see the release of Gunman Clive on the eShop. What is Gunman Clive, you ask? Well, it's a port of a phone game.

A pretty fucking awesome phone game.

What's the big deal?

Well, if that trailer hasn't convinced you, it's heavily inspired by Mega Man, as well as Castlevania, Super Mario Bros, Contra and Donkey Kong Country.

The eShop release will be the first time the game can be played the way it's meant to be played: with buttons.

And in an unprecedented move, as far as I know: it will be released for the same price as on iOS. Only $2!

Can't wait!

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

I got that for free earlier this summer on the Amazon store for my Android phone...I dunno, even disregarding the awful touchscreen controls, it seemed really dull. Trailer looks to have some okay parts though.

Ehhhh, I can't see how the game in this trailer could be dull. We'll see! The platform probably makes all the difference with this game. Some genres are well-suited for touch controls, but Mega Man isn't one of them.

@Guillaume I think my worry would be that if the game is designed with iOS in mind, it might be slower, and that the 3DS' buttons might make the game a snoozefest. For $2 though? I'd be all over it most likely.

@PogueSquadron

Did you not read the link? It was always designed with buttons in mind. They didn't compromise the game for touch controls, so really what we're getting here is what should have been in the first place.

It's out. It's $2. It's fun. It's short.

You like Mega Man? So does the creator of this game!

I like how the levels get crazier and crazier. The game goes places you certainly don't expect when playing the first level.

Beat the game and you get a new character that completely changes the way you play the game. It's pretty solid.

@Zero

Well turns out that when you make a game suited for buttons, and give it buttons, magic happens. I'm not saying the game is awesome on phones.

It's an awesome game that got lost and finally found its true home.

Then you should have said an awesome 3DS game that sucked on phones! You got me all worried! Guillaume recommending a phone game is one of the 12 signs of the apocalypse.

What's next, Grant picks a console game for his game of the year?!

Good god, can't imagine how this would work without a digital pad and buttons.

Seems alright so far. The first 5 stages or so are a bit slow, but then it picks up.

Mustache chucks his WiiU in to play 3DS exclusively.

Shadowlink doesn't get attacked by huge spiders.

@Zero

I never get attacked by spiders. They know better.

Went to buy this but it was $2.50.

Fuuuuuu. I only have $2.
01/04/13, 10:44
It was?! It was $2 last night. Oh wait, Australia.

Anyway, I'm near the end of the game. It's very, very short. Like, less than / about an hour long... short. Some might even question whether this is worth $2, but I've paid $10 for 3-4 hour games so I don't mind. Plus it might be worth a replay using the unlockable character that changes everything.

It's a fun game. Not life changing, but fun. I may review it.

I may have to give this game a look. For two bucks, it seems like the risk is low enough to warrant a purchase. If for nothing else, but to just simply try it.

And our dollar is worth more than yours too. It's dumb. ...Better than it was, (We're getting new games console launching here for like $80 instead of the $120 from a few years back), but still dumb.

Grrr.

01/05/13, 01:58
Is that the Australian dollar?
01/05/13, 02:10
@Zero No, it's a decorative version of the actual spiders they use as currency.

So I tried to download Gunman Clive from the eShop today after I downloaded Code of Princess. But the eShop wouldn't let me. Kept getting an error message saying that the eShop was under maintenance or something. Anyone else have an issue accessing the eShop today?

..............

......eShop.
