Mega Man X2 on the SNES

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mega Man X2 on the SNES!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

You know, at the time, I always thought of this as a rather odd sequel. It felt darker, and just plain... weirder? I still loved it though, and I think I love it even more now.

Anyway, back when Capcom brought back Mega Man 9 as a "classic" Mega Man game, there was a lot of talk about doing it with the X series as well, going back to SNES style gameplay / graphics. Would you guys want to see that? Or is SNES X not quite classic enough?

I'd be all over that myself.

I'd take a SNES X9, especially if Inti Creates were on the job. I'd rather see a brand new Mega Man style, preferably in 3D. As much as I love (LOOOOOOVE) the classics, there are enough of them already. I would buy more and love them, but I really want to see this series evolve, just out of curiosity.

Hasn't it kind of already evolved into the Zero and ZX series though?

I was thinking more of another try at 3D. I was salivating all generation at the thought of a 3D platformer using the Wii remote's pointer to aim...but I've long since given up that dream.

Even regarding 2D, ZX is mostly just a refinement of Mega Man Zero, which is over ten years old. I wouldn't mind more ZX, considering we only got two, but I could go for something new in two dimensions as well.

But hey, we don't need to worry about any of that because Capcom's got the franchise on indefinite hiatus anyway!

But yeah, Mega Man X2. I actually never played it until the Mega Man X Collection, and it was just as good as X and X3 so that was great. Been a long time since I've played any of them, at least four or five years. Maybe someday I'll kill the rest of my backlog and relive some excellent 16-bit action-platformer.

X2 actually felt less dark to me than the first X game. A lot of the music in general doesn't have as "grand" a tone, though I still think the soundtrack is totally awesome. X3 on the other hand feels the "darkest" to me out of the Super NES trilogy.

I love that X2 introduced the air-dash. It's one of my favorite aspects of the series, and I really miss it whenever I replay the very first X game. When I first unlocked it in X2, the concept of such a thing even being possible blew my mind. It made me even more a fan of the series than before

I'd love a new Mega Man X game in the style of the Super NES trilogy; unlike the original series with the NES, I think the Mega Man X series was best on the Super NES by far, with regard to style, tone, and themes. The music especially is also something that I felt dropped down in quality greatly after the Super NES trilogy, so a return to that style would be much-welcomed by me.

I would definitely like to see SNES graphics/gameplay again.

Throw it back!

The first four X games are classics. All of them. 5 is alright and the rest are shit.

I got this on sale. I've defeated three robots so far, two just using the buster (Wire Sponge and Overdrive Ostrich. I need to find some hearts, because you're so weak to start. I've seen a couple but can't get them yet.

Feels like more of the same from the original. Playable, but a big disappointment compared to the brilliance of the traditional series.

X7 is SO BAD. Maybe one of the worst games I've ever played.

@Jargon I'm probably not qualified to give an objective opinion on the Super NES X trilogy, since I've played all three games to completion a million times over. I personally prefer them over the original series though.

@Anand I remember actually really liking X7 when I played it. I hated the story and the pointless addition of Axl and the fact you can't play as X himself for most of the game... but the mix of 2D and 3D gameplay I thought was really cool. Then again I haven't played it in about a decade; I should see if my previous impressions hold up.

Shit, did I fuck up? I beat all but one of the robot masters, Crystal Snail. But I did that before collecting any of the Zero parts. So I was able to get one Zero part in Crystal Snail's stage, but now those other two bosses with Zero parts aren't showing up on the Stage Select anymore. Should I have beaten them before I beat any of the last three stages? Or is there something else I can do?

@X-pert74
Well, I don't want to piss in anyone's cereal. I didn't play through the whole thing, and the 2D parts were okay. I just found the 3D sections to be incredibly poorly done.

What's the one with random levels, again? X6?
09/13/14, 16:15
@Jargon

If you select the stage they are in and bypass them then you can't fight them afterwords. You can manipulate what levels they are in by entering and exiting beaten stages. They also have specific weakness weapons that you can use so that also helps with that.
09/13/14, 16:57
@Jargon Yeah, you fucked up From what I recall, the X hunters also switch stages even if you enter and die out of a level you haven't beaten yet. So you can enter a level that one of the X hunters is in, defeat that X hunter, then kill yourself until you get to the stage select screen so that you keep Zero's part. Then repeat until you get all the parts. I'm pretty sure that will work, though it's been awhile since I last tried to get all his parts.

(EDIT: Also, I think if you follow the specific boss/weapon order that all of the Maverick bosses are weak too, you can get all the Zero parts without having to enter and exit and re-enter levels. That would probably require looking up the correct order online though, unless you replay and memorize the order on later playthroughs )

@Anand X6 was advertised as having random levels, but for the most part the level designs stay the same. I think there's maybe one level in the game which has two or three possible layouts (Ground Yaridovich or whatever he's called), but that's about it; most of the others just will have like... icicle obstacles that are there on one playthrough, but aren't there another playthrough, or something like that. It's very basic, and does not by any means make up for the shitty level design X6 as a whole has.

Well seems like I lost my chance. Fucking lame. How much will I be missing out on if I just beat it without collecting the Zero parts? Another playable character, presumably, but any actual levels or anything? Starting over would be a real pain and I don't think I like this game enough for that.
09/14/14, 01:26
@JargonI always thought that it was just the difference of a cutscene/dialogue and a palette swap on a boss battle.
09/14/14, 01:47
@PogueSquadron

I found a password generator online, I might be able to "go back in time" using that. But if you're right then fuck it, I'll just keep playing.
09/14/14, 01:53
@PogueSquadron Hmm, but if you do get all of the parts doesn't Zero come in and kill fake Zero for you and thus you don't actually do that boss fight? Or am I confused.

If I'm right, it might actually be more rewarding to NOT get the parts, as it adds slightly more gameplay?

But I could be wrong, haven't played it in years.
09/14/14, 03:20
Pushing forward, I've beaten all the regular stages and collected all the hidden hearts, upgrades and subtanks. Definitely had to use a guide to find some of that stuff (even with the radar upgrade). Lots of things look like they're impossible to reach and require really tricky techniques to get to. I'm sure I would have loved figuring that stuff out when I was a kid, but happy to just look it up now. Many were challenging even knowing exactly what to do.

Ugh some annoying design choices at the end of this game:

First, the last level is a repeat of another part of the game for some reason. That wouldn't be so bad, but you have to replay it every time you die. It's not particularly interesting either.

Then, after you beat Zero, you'd think you might get a checkpoint before facing Sigma. But no, you start all the way back at the beginning of the stupid repeat level part. And since I need to use a Sub Tank to beat Zero, that means I basically have to just kill myself and start over at that point. I guess it's good motivation to get the Zero parts, but of course I missed the boat on that and there's nothing I can do about it now.

Finally, Sigma has a second form (hopefully no more after that) and he doesn't even have a health bar. I got him to turn blue before I died, maybe I was close. And of course no check point after beating the first form. But to make matters even worse, there's terrible slow down on that part as he creates enemies around him. Makes it really hard to time the charged shot correctly which sucks.
09/14/14, 10:11
Ok well, I learned Zero and Sigma's weaknesses and they were super easy after that. I still used some Sub Tanks, but I wasn't playing particularly well at all and I still was never in much danger

Another Mega Man X game in the books for me. My thoughts haven't changed much on the series so far. They're fun enough, mostly because I'm a sucker for action platformers like this, but they don't rise to the level of the NES games for me. So I'll probably grab X3 whenever it goes on sale, but not before that.

Now that I've got a few X games under my belt, I might try some of the Zero games for GBA. How do they compare? Are they similar? More like the original Mega Man games? Somewhere in between? Even more different than the X games?
