Trine 2: Director's Cut (Nintendo Wii U eShop) Review (8.7)  by

So, did anyone else buy this game? The $20 price tag may seem steep for a downloadable title, but it seems pretty sweet so far. It's beautiful and is a very nice blend of 2D platforming / puzzles with a bit of combat thrown in the mix.

Also it is up to 3 player online co-op. Let's play together!!!

After Frozenbyte hyped up how easy Nintendo was to work with and how the Wii U was getting the best version, you'd think they'd have a feature that's in every other version. I guess I should have learned my lesson on such things by now though. (I found out today that Animal Crossing 3DS won't have voice chat, either. Sigh...)

Oh well, this makes the decision to stick with the Steam version all the easier.

Well it is called "Director's Cut" (maybe I should add this to the game name in the db) so it may have some extra stuff the others don't, I dunno. But I'm sure they did what they could, I mean, I don't want to blame Nintendo but I kind of blame Nintendo. If Nintendo put a focus on voice chat and had everything in place, I'm sure Frozenbyte would have been down for including it. At least it has online, which is more than any of Nintendo's own launch titles.

...I'm not even saying for sure it's not there, I haven't really looked.

It heard the DLC that you have to pay for on other platforms and a new Party Mode. I am not sure what that is though.

It's a very pretty game. Like... VERY. I think the art style goes a long way. There are probably a lot of PS3 games that look nicer on a technical level, but I'd put this up there with almost anything I've played nonetheless.

Of course, that prettiness comes with a (relatively) large price tag of $20 and a very, very large file size of close to 2 GB.

Curious as to why they priced it at $20. It's $15 on Steam, $7.49 on sale right now, and devs are allowed to price their games at whatever they want on the eShop. Weird. Although the file size is super tiny, I'm still wondering why the Wii U has such an abysmally small amount of internal storage. I can get a 2TB hard drive as a regular ass consumer for less than $80, I'm sure Nintendo could pull some strings to get at least a terrabyte for pretty cheap so that games wouldn't cripple the internal storage. I mean you can hook up your own stuff, but still! It might create potential issues down the road where different SKUs cause problems. The 360 for example still runs into tons of issues because some people might not have a hard drive at all.

I mean, they allow you to buy full retail games, which are all much, much larger than Trine 2. 2GB for a game is absolutely tiny. AC3 is 15GB and Max Payne 3 is like almost 30GB or something.

Ah well, long as you can plug in your own it's not too big of a deal.

Trine 2's an awesome game, though. It's fully featured, has a decent length and plays very well. $20 certainly isn't asking very much of it. Fucking Funky Farm is $50 and it's a cheap ass Farmville knockoff!

@Xbob42

I think its $15 on PS3 and 360 too but I think (I may be wrong there) they are charging more as it has the DLC bundled with it and a new exclusive party mode but I still have no idea what that is.

This is about all I can find on it.

We are also going to introduce the new “Magic Mayhem” party mode that brings the frantic multiplayer of Trine 2 into a more challenging environment where players can battle and laugh together.

Well apparently the "Director's Cut" includes DLC that you have to pay for on the other platforms?

I'm trying to imagine how long it would take to download a 30 GB game on my Internet here. At least a week, no joke. Ah well, wasn't planning on downloading any retail games anyway.
11/24/12, 02:35
Ahh, if it has bundled DLC that would explain the price differential.

Zero, time to go somewhere with better internet! I could pull down a 30GB game in a couple hours. Still a little slower than I'd like, but if it took me that long to download something I'd go insane!

Wii UWare looks so stupid. Could we change that to Wii U eShop?
11/24/12, 02:44
@Guillaume Why didn't they just call it the WiiShop?!

@Xbob42

As far as most people I see posting on different boards, I would think you would know the most about external HDDs, as in where to buy, which ones would be the best/most reliable, ect. I certainly don't know jack shit about them. I know eventually I will end up using all of my 32 gbs in the Wii U.

It would be great to point us ignorant people in the right direction, maybe list some stores, online or not, brands, ect.

Honestly, Nintendo should have done this themselves. Sure, I guess I could look around and start checking them out, comparting prices and what not. I've seen someone else mention 2TB for around $80 or less. Hell, it might have been you. Anyways, when I first saw that post a week or so ago, and no again, it just really pisses me off how Sony and MS charge so much extra for their consoles, just cause they have a couple hundred gbs of memory included, or like the Super Slim PS3 which I think has 500gbs and Sony is charging alot more for that PS3, when in reality they could have kept the system at $249 and still made a profit. Esp, for a company like Sony or MS, they probably get the memory very, very cheap, esp. buying in large quantities.

At least I thought Nintendo was being upfront about not including alot of memory for their console, but at the same time they should at least give people a list of options or where to go. Honestly, I think Nintendo should at least make their own HDD and sell them. Hell, if they didn't want to mass produce them and send them out to all the retail stores, at least they could sell them just online.

I think the majority of people buying the Wii U, probably is about as clueless as myself when it comes to external HDDs. Will any external HDD work for the Wii U? Only certain brands? I am certain if I went to a place, lets just say, Best Buy(though I would never go there, cause those bastards would charge at least twice as much as the next guy), and asked them which brand or type of external HDD would I need for the Wii U, they probably would not know or they would act like they did and try to sell me the most expensice model.

So, it would be great if you could help out XBob, if not thats cool.

Dude, man you run this site, ect. I think I've read where you live with your aunt. Why not just get your own high speed internet service. Hell, I used to have DSL before I moved last year, now I have high speed through my cable provider, which is much faster than the dsl, but even the dsl was really quick and it only cost me about $50 a month. Now, I have internet through my cable provider and its only about $20 more, thats $70 plus I get free landline telephone service. I can call anywhere for any amount of time.

And I don't want to hear you don't make enough money. Unless you are unemployeed, I guarentee you make more money than myself. I pay for my own place, car, utilities, food, you name it.

@gamewizard65

I'm no expert on external hard drives. I deal exclusively in internal ones, which is what my cheap 2TB is. I actually have a personal seller who can get them for me cheap. (Haha, sounds like a lame drug deal when I phrase it like that. Just a contact I made on Craigslist who has access to hardware for cheaper.)

Despite what many people say, brands don't matter all that much on hard drives. There's a certain super-cheap brands that could be slightly less reliable, but at the end of the day, most hard drives will last you a good long while. Just check out reviews for them if you're ever in doubt. (Remember to take lots of reviews into account. All hardware has a certain failure rate out of the box. A raging 1-star review cause someone got a dead piece of hardware that they had to exchange over the course of a week isn't necessarily useful, unless EVERYONE'S reviews are like that.)

Anyway, here's a good deal.

1TB external hard drive. $69.99.

Good brand, good price. External hard drives are a little more expensive due to the nature of them requiring a plastic housing and perhaps a bracket, raising the manufacturing costs.

If you don't mind spending just a little bit (Slightly less than double, but c'mon, still relatively cheap!) more, you can triple that, though.

3TB drive, $129.99

For reference, a 3TB drive would be enough to store 500 games sized at 6GB. (Which is the average size of a non-gigantic game.) That's more than enough for most people's entire collection for a console a few times over, installed permanently.

@Guillaume Where is that showing up?! Wii U eShop is the display name.

...although I forget why there are two different names in the database.

@gamewizard65 I'm pretty sure I make less money than most people on here, but then again I work less than most people on here too. Whatever the case, we pay $20? for our Internet right now so $50-$70 is a huge leap and frankly, it's not really worth it to me, because 29 days out of 30 I'm not doing any heavy downloading so the Internet works just fine for what I do. I tend to only spend money on necessities (food, gas, etc.) and video games, for the most part. The rest goes to paying off college.

@Xbob42

Thats cool. Thanks though. Yes, I know it may come off a little lazy, like I am looking for someone to give me a model, ect. But I do plan on researching them. Its just that I've never had to buy one or there has never been a reason to research them. I was just looking for a starting point. And that is exactly what you gave me.

@Zero

Yea, I understand how priorities go, esp. if you are paying your way thru college. I def. don't know how people do it nowadays. Back when I was in school, I think the most a semester cost back then was $600, though it started out cheaper, and I was a full time student. I was also in state, which helped reducse the cost. But I know now, a semester is over $2,000, or that is what it was several years ago when I was curious since my kids only had a few years left in high school.

My youngest son will start Mortician school in Pittsburgh this Jan. He will go to school for 20 months and then for his masters he has to go to another school for 2 more years, or it might only be 1, I keep forgetting. Anyways, I know its going to cost around $50 grand or maybe $60 grand and that may cover everything or just the first couple years. I have a hard time remember all the details anymore on anything I'm told. But yea, I know it costs an arm and a leg. Than God for Loans, ect. Cause no way in hell, even between his mom and myself, do we have that kind of money. I only make around $27,000 a year. I know alot of people say, how do you live on that. Well, the cost of living in West Virginia is fairly inexpensive. For example, the house I own, is valued around $55,000, but if that same house was in California, it would cost around $175,000-$200,000 or more. I have relatives that live out there for most of their lives. They have sent me listing and pictures for houses. Man, a couple places I saw for around $50 grand looked like a shack ready to fall down. My house is a 3 bedroom, 2 story house. Now, its not real big, but hey, it does the job, plus it is very nice.

Anyways, when its time to buy a new car, I buy it used and pay it off then or if its more than I can afford to pay off, I usually go to one of the places where I put half or more down and usually pay them the extra for about 6-12 months. So, yea, I actually live fairly well on $27,000 a year. Plus, with the kids and all, I have not had to pay in any Fed taxes since like 1992. I've qualified for the earned income credit every year since my first son was born. And will continue to do so as long as one of then is in school.

So, only thing I need to do is have another kid before they are out of school...ha,ha..only kidding there. I love my sons, but I don't think I would want another now. I am single and other than when the kids and get together, all my time is for myself. I like that as I am a very private person. I seriously doubt if I ever get married again. If I did, that person would have to be into videogaming, just like myself. Though, I'm not getting any younger, but I still look like I'm 30-ish, but still, I honestly would rather remain single. I know things might change, but I'm not looking and I never lead anyone on to think that I am.

Good luck with everything.

In FrozenByte's defense, they wanted to kick off the Wii U with a Trine 2 sale, but the functionality wasn't in place yet.
