Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition (Nintendo Wii U) Review (9.6)  by

Fired this bad boy up last night, and it is a lot more button mashy than I expected..but is it supposed to be?

I know a lot of people are PASSIONATE about this series, and I would enjoy some help, but PLEASE no spoilers or even almost-spoilers. We can use this, for the time being, for general questions and answers, that would be great.

Q: The Riddler trophy deals; how do I trigger them / get them? I see some discs on top of roofs, does that do ANYTHING?
A: Discs are pressure pads, you activate them by standing on them. Riddler trophies are often locked up with little puzzles. Depending what gadgets/upgrades you have you may not be able to get some but that's the only way in which they are locked off.

Q: Where the heck am I going? Is there an easier way to figure this out? Do I just go towards the Green?
A: You have one active waypoint at time. Bring up your map and you can set it to a specifc quest, or just a random spot if you like. The main story is progressed via the large green exclamation point within a hexagon icon IIRC.

Q: Am I REALLY just punching, kicking, and countering? Is there a better way to do combos?
A: Initially, yes. Once you get to a combo of 8 you can initiate special moves which are activated by pressing 2 buttons at the same time. These include an instant KO move, an area of effect stun, and a disarm combo. You can also use gadgets by various button combos. The majority of your gadgets can be used in combat. Consult your upgrades screen to learn what abilities you have as well as your control diagram to see the gadget commands.

Q: Are there some shorthand commands that I can do better? I feel pretty clueless w/ my utility belt.
A: I'm not sure on this. The touchscreen interface might change it up a bit but in other versions you could quickly switch between all of your gadgets. Nothing was ever more than 2 d pad presses away.

Q: What if I see a trophy I can't get?
A: Scan it, and it will be marked on your map.

Q: Can you scan ALL the time? I've already scanned SOME stuff, but only when I was prompted.
A: Early on you aren't able to scan at will but there comes a point where you are able to. It'll just sort of happen.

Yeah, I wonder how I skipped so much? In general, I found the Riddler trophies hard to get because lots of times I couldn't tell whether (a) I just couldn't figure out how to reach the trophy even though I could see it, or (b) if it was a case of me not having the right gadget (later I found out I needed the right gadget, like the Ice Blast to freeze the steam, or the mine disabler). Since it looks like I'm still missing some of the gadgets at this point in the game, I should probably focus on getting those first before going after more trophies.

Also I was a bit confused about how to do more of the side missions whose progress I can view in my menu. A lot of these aren't marked on my map, so I guess I have to figure out how to actually start them? Like the Deadshot one, 'Identity Theft,' the killer who makes you find the ringing phones, etc.

I don't think you "skipped" anything. I finished all of the in-game sidequests, and I found nearly ALL of the Riddler things. That was a huge piece of my percentage. How did you do with Catwoman's stuff? I think I found everything for her.

Those missions you're talking about; have you done anything more with them at all? Like, I remember the ringing phones just kept going until you answered one. Something would pop up and tell you how far away the phones were. And it might be common sense, but are there any.."pulsey" things on your map? Maybe you just wanna comb the city from the air, and watch your map. Sometimes I'd be flying around, and you'd hear a loud noise -- a signature gunshot, perhaps? -- , and then Oracle would tell you something.

Did you finish the..Watcher? one? That one took me the longest. I finished Identity Theft AND that one AFTER I beat the game, so you can, too!

@Mr_Mustache

I did ok with Catwoman's stuff, but I'm sure I still need to find a lot of her stuff as well. Now that I've beaten the game, I love that I can now switch between Batman and Catwoman at certain locations on the map.

I want to keep going with those missions I talked about. I did the phone rings several times; with each new one I found, the killer would reveal more about himself (what a creepy psychopath, by the way). I'll keep my eyes and ears open for any more ringing phones. Like you said, comb the city from the air, and all that good stuff.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. I do check for the "pulsey" things (mission objectives) on my map, but there don't seem to be mission objective icons for a lot of the side missions at this point. Right now the mission objective icons are mostly for the advanced AR missions; I think one is labeled 'Riddler's hostage' but when I go there I can't find anything. Sometimes it's really hard to find something even when it's labeled on your map!

I don't think I've done the Watcher one (the name doesn't ring a bell). But yes, I plan to do a lot more playing with this game!

@roykoopa64

The phones..did you realize that you're supposed to trace / wiretap their location? I was just listening / "enjoying the story" for the first one or two. Fool! I freaked out shortly after because I didn't think I'd finish in time. Could that be an issue?

Well, the Mission Objective isn't exactly the "pulsey" thing I'm talking about. The one that I'm referring is more to the phone ringing or a political prisoner being assaulted or something. Where is the Riddler's Hostage deal? Have you not done any of the Riddler "Room" things? I think you might have to use Detective Mode at the scene, and a bright green question mark will probably be there, and you can press A (I think) on the area, and Batman will make a door, haha.

The Watcher mission would've been when you ran into some goofy mysterious guy on a roof. You'd remember, and it'd be in your Missions.

I beat the Harley Quinn's Revenge game last night, that was a fun extension of the main game. It got challenging at times, like when Robin fights off the large group of bad guys (including the giant), and I just barely managed to stop all the bombs as Batman before the timer reached zero.

I'm a fool too! I had no idea. I know the game tells you at those moments "look at your GamePad," but it never occurred to me that I needed to touch the locations myself! It looked like it was doing it automatically as part of the story, and that with each phone conversation, Batman was getting closer and closer to tracing the bad guy's location. Oh man.

Oh yeah, I get what you're saying about the pulsey things now. Yeah, they're different from the normal mission objective icons. I tried one Riddler Room one time, but I couldn't do anything; Batman was killed by the trap, and the game tells you that you don't have the necessary gadgets yet. So I skipped most of them while I played through since I didn't want to keep dying needlessly. That kind of stuff seems best left until after beating the game when you have all the gadgets.

Batman will 'make a door?' Yeaaah, I don't remember seeing any of that.

Anyway, now that I'm done with the Harley's Revenge story, I'll be jumping back into the main game and doing a lot more stuff I've missed out on.

@roykoopa64

Batman making a door: *Knock knock knock* *EXPLODES through the wall with his shoulder*

You said you were in a room though, so it must've happened..

I didn't actually finish HQR. I started it and trailed off. Ah well. I'll be back someday!
(And hopefully you didn't mess up your phone thing!)

EDIT- A thought.. I know that sometimes you can re-listen to stuff you've already heard sometimes; maybe you wanna look through your things and see if you can find the Phone stuff again? Maybe you can re-trace then?

@Mr_Mustache

So I was lucky enough to play some more last night, and the phone rang again while I was out cruising. So I did the tracing thing correctly this time, and in the end, I did catch the killer, Zsasz! That was a nice accomplishment.

Now I get what you're saying about Batman making a door! I hadn't done those rooms before, but last night I did two of them and rescued the hostages (I love how Riddler claims Batman is cheating when he's obviously cheating big time).

I've been finding more Riddler trophies as well. But there's still some I just can't figure out. Like, the ones where you have to hit all the question marks (like three) without pausing in between hits. What if two of them are behind fences where the Batarang doesn't reach? Or what about the trophies that require you to stand on different pressure pads at the same time in different locations? How is that possible with only one playable character? There was also the trophy inside Zsasz's hideout where you have to hit the relay with electricity. But you can't shoot your electric shot while crawling through the air duct, and I couldn't find an electric source for my remote Batarang. Man, I have so much to figure out!

I'm still missing two gadgets with Batman though? I assume I'll find them as I do more side missions (and continue to level up as well?).

The next side mission that popped up was another Deadshot victim. I think it's the third victim I've found so far? Looking forward to see how that one will close out.

I might have 27 or so hours on the game, but sadly, my total percentage is still only like 50%. I love the game, but I definitely don't plan to go for 100% due to my backlog of games I want to play. I want to get closer to 70% at least.
02/14/13, 18:57
@roykoopa64

Haha, yeah, Riddler is something else. I like when it said/says for one of them "Use Detective Vision to make sure Riddler isn't cheating!" HE TOTALLY WAY.

I don't want to tell you explicitly, but I CAN tell you that you may not need to necessarily..STRIKE them in order for them to work. You have the means about you. Experiment a little, even if it feels ridiculous. You'll figure it out.

The Pressure Points don't necessarily require you to STAND on them at the same time, just that you can't touch the GROUND or a WALL or something in between them. Remember when you used to go on the playground and you couldn't touch the lava or something? Its kinda like that. Use your tools / glide stuff to work on those. Some of them have a series of FOUR switches that you gotta hit, and you gotta start up REEEEAL high, and then fly to it on a wall, and kick off of that wall to glide somewhere else. You'll figure out the rest. There ARE a few that I never got though that just mush my brain.

In the hideout, I think there IS an electric source in there somewhere. I can't remember for sure, I'm sorry.

What did I say my total was? 71%? I didn't do much of the Extras from the main menu yet, or New Game+ at all.

Oh cool, last night I caught another villain and finished off another side mission: Deadshot! It wasn't too hard.

Got a few more trophies too.

Hmm, ok, I'll keep trying stuff out then!

Ah, that makes sense! Some of these seem pretty tough to pull off, I mess up a lot on the whole "cling to the wall then glide off without falling straight down" technique.

Thanks Stache!

@roykoopa64

Yeah, you gotta like press/hold a button when you hit the wall, and then re-lunge off. You'll get the hang of it! Have you seen the 4 surrounded by chain link fences? That one was EXTREMELY frustrating.
02/17/13, 01:49
@Mr_Mustache

Yeah, I saw that one. UGH.
02/17/13, 06:08
They are tough but not impossible. Just have to practice a bit and really use that grapple launch ability.
02/17/13, 06:46
Beat the main story last night and I have to say, this game is inferior to Asylum in every single way. Still going to 100% it though. Combat was frustrating, Predator areas were few and far between, too much combat, world was no where near as enjoyable and overall, I just didn't have as much fun with it.

This seems to be the consensus. Still, I'm enjoying it. Progress is v-e-r-y s-l-o-w, though.

I loved the heck out of this game. Game of the Year, 2012. Check the Review!

@Mr_Mustache
Yes but your biased because of smut /sarc
12/12/13, 11:00
@Pokefreak911

If anything, I'd be biased AGAINST the game for promising me something that isn't there. Arkham Origins has TWO humungous signs with nothing! (Though there is a club in Origins; there are some posters and such, but no live girls )
12/12/13, 22:59
@Mr_Mustache
Well Batman is a busy man. No time for dilly dallying.
12/13/13, 03:06
@anon_mastermind

That's... not the consensus at all. The games reviewed similarly and it is going to be up to individual preference as to what game's style they like more. Asylum had extremely weak boss fights like Killer Croc, Ivy and Joker for example that were regularly cited as being poor. City didn't have anything approaching that. City also had side missions allowing you to venture off the beaten path and pursue different objectives. Of course, if you like a more densely designed environment Asylum has the advantage.
12/13/13, 03:14
@Stephen
Yeah it really is up to preference. Asylum is definitely a stronger stealth game while City focused more on the Open World and Combat.
