Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition (Nintendo Wii U) Review (9.6)  by

Fired this bad boy up last night, and it is a lot more button mashy than I expected..but is it supposed to be?

I know a lot of people are PASSIONATE about this series, and I would enjoy some help, but PLEASE no spoilers or even almost-spoilers. We can use this, for the time being, for general questions and answers, that would be great.

Q: The Riddler trophy deals; how do I trigger them / get them? I see some discs on top of roofs, does that do ANYTHING?
A: Discs are pressure pads, you activate them by standing on them. Riddler trophies are often locked up with little puzzles. Depending what gadgets/upgrades you have you may not be able to get some but that's the only way in which they are locked off.

Q: Where the heck am I going? Is there an easier way to figure this out? Do I just go towards the Green?
A: You have one active waypoint at time. Bring up your map and you can set it to a specifc quest, or just a random spot if you like. The main story is progressed via the large green exclamation point within a hexagon icon IIRC.

Q: Am I REALLY just punching, kicking, and countering? Is there a better way to do combos?
A: Initially, yes. Once you get to a combo of 8 you can initiate special moves which are activated by pressing 2 buttons at the same time. These include an instant KO move, an area of effect stun, and a disarm combo. You can also use gadgets by various button combos. The majority of your gadgets can be used in combat. Consult your upgrades screen to learn what abilities you have as well as your control diagram to see the gadget commands.

Q: Are there some shorthand commands that I can do better? I feel pretty clueless w/ my utility belt.
A: I'm not sure on this. The touchscreen interface might change it up a bit but in other versions you could quickly switch between all of your gadgets. Nothing was ever more than 2 d pad presses away.

Q: What if I see a trophy I can't get?
A: Scan it, and it will be marked on your map.

Q: Can you scan ALL the time? I've already scanned SOME stuff, but only when I was prompted.
A: Early on you aren't able to scan at will but there comes a point where you are able to. It'll just sort of happen.

I think AC does kind of expect that you know things from Arkham Asylum.

You are just punching, kicking, and countering, yes. Chaining punches, kicks, and counters together racks up your combo meter. In AC, it's not atypical to see that combo meter go up to x40 or x50, and the better your combo, the more XP you get. This helps you unlock new moves and gadgets and armor upgrades more quickly. Also, as you get certain combos (like x3 or x5 I think), your combo meter will turn orange or something, and that will let you do a special takedown or throw by pressing a combination of the face buttons. I remember AC not really cluing you in on that as much, when in AA they told you when you could do new kinds of takedowns.

I forget if AC was like this, but in AA, you had to prioritize. If you see a guy with a gun, take him out first. See a guy with a weapon, or about to throw something? You might want to take him out as well. As the game goes on, you will encounter enemies that you can't simply punch, and you might have to block or dodge before you can take them out, so they won't all be as simple as the regular thugs you encounter.

What do you mean by shorthand commands? If the WiiU version is like the other versions, you should be able to select new gadgets using the D-Pad.

The Riddler trophies are scattered throughout Arkham City and act as small puzzles for you to solve. You won't be able to solve all of them right away. There are a LOT of them. I mean a LOT. You'll have to decide if it's really worth your time looking for them, but yeah, they're kind of optional I think.

I'm pretty sure the map should always point you to your next objective? I think you can select an objective and make that your main destination. If you have a side mission, you can select that and that will be the waypoint that appears on your map.

I'm not the best to ask due to terrible memory, but:

1. Riddler trophies are kind of extra collectibles, you either randomly find them, solve puzzles, etc.

2. Within your menu somewhere you should be able to set your next goal, and you can choose the main quest or one of your side quests. When you do this, there should be an arrow that points to where you are supposed to go and it even tells you the distance. This was on the PS3 version, anyway. I believe it should be automatically doing this, you only need to use the menu to change your current goal really.

3. The battle system evolves over time, although whether you fully utilize it or not is up to you. I got through a lot of the fights without ever really learning the intricacies.

4. Don't know about this one.

@Stephen

Thanks, Steve!

@PogueSquadron

That might be. I remember reading something about the D-pad (BRIEFLY..this game doesn't wait around), but I haven't put anything on the D-pad yet.

@Zero

I feel like..I have no time to do anything. And I feel like stuff is so far away. I spent a lot of time dying / failing over and over again on the same part yesterday. Took some getting used to, for sure.

I thought Arkham Asylum was way better than Arkham City, the latter was such a let down for me. Arkham Asylum was a much more focused game that felt much better to play in my opinion. Arkham City just felt like it was trying to do too much.

@warerare

I DO feel like there is a lot going on. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intimidate by the girth of the City.
Keep in mind: I'm not a Grand Theft Auto guy either.

EDIT- And I actually said out loud yesterday, to myself, "..I don't think I'm hardcore enough..."

BOOOOO. Don't listen to this. Exclusive footage of Zero playing Arkham City:

Riddler trophies are EVERYWHERE (WAY too many, IMO). And a lot of them you can't do until you've upgraded your abilities...it's tough to hold off on doing them until after finishing the story, because there are just so damn many of them cluttering the map. Some of the puzzles are very rewarding, though.

@TheBigG753

So, should I just do my best to ignore them now? I see them ALL OVER THE PLACE.
And after I found one, I was like "whoa..maybe I better get all of these now..."

@Mr_Mustache

There's no rush. They don't become locked off and once you beat the game you are able to go around and finish up secondary stuff. On top of that if you do New Game Plus your progress towards getting them all is shared.
11/20/12, 02:14
@Stephen

Oh, alright. Barebones run it is. Within reason.

(I did find something extra yesterday though.. Reminding me a lot of Metroid Prime.. Scan the HELL out of everything....)
11/20/12, 02:17
Also when you find a trophy you can't get, when you get the ability to scan, scan it and it'll be marked on your map.

@chrisbg99

Can you scan ALL the time? I've already scanned SOME stuff, but only when I was prompted.

BTW, the stuff I've scanned; you hold the Pad up like "this is where you're looking," and I was actually standing UP in the "living room" looking at stuff. It was pretty weird...but really cool at the same time.
11/20/12, 02:37

@Mr_Mustache - There's a point fairly early in the game where the game will prompt you to scan a Riddler trophy. From that point on you can scan them whenever you like.

And like others have said, there's no rush to collect the trophies. However, the trophies are an easy source of Experience Points, so I don't recommend putting them off until after the story is over. Just at some point during the story when you feel like you don't need to rush into your next objective, try to solve some of the Riddler trophy puzzles or any other sidequests you may have come across as you were exploring the city. (In fact, there's one particular sidequest that you really should do as soon as it becomes available as it gives Batman a new ability that aids you in a particular way that is extremely helpful. Not sure if I should go into any more detail on that for fear of spoilers, but it's not like it's easy to miss or anything.)

I had less fun with the few Riddler trophies that I only got once the story was over. It was more exciting to me to find these trophies and solve the puzzles while the story was still ongoing. Going around and "cleaning up" what I had missed, so to speak, after the story was over just wasn't as rewarding to me.

And don't worry about the scope of the city. I was overwhelmed by it at first as well (not a GTA guy myself). But within very little time the city will become very familiar to you, and it'll stop feeling as big as it currently does.

Oh, and did you play Arkham Asylum, or are you starting with Arkham City?

EDIT: Also, it's not entirely true that the game won't lock you out of areas. Depending on where you are in the story, the game may temporarily lock you out of certain areas. All areas will open back up at some point (even if it's after you've finished the story), but not every point is always unlocked for you.

Make sure you do the Augmented Reality stuff if you feel like it's taking too long to get around the city.

@V_s

This is my first foray into the Batman universe in videogame form since Batman Vengeance on Gamecube - a rental.

And yes, some of the doors I've encountered appear to be locked, but others appear as if they WERE locked..but I could unlock them. I guess..I just need some more time in the water to know whats what? I'll probably log another 2 or 3 tonight.

@PogueSquadron

Mehr? Are you talking about the scanning rooms?
11/20/12, 04:58
Disappointed by frame issues.
11/20/12, 05:09
@Mr_Mustache - Pogue is talking about the sidequest that I was trying not to name for spoilers' sake. (The one that you should do as soon as it becomes available.) It's not the scanning rooms. It's something that'll be marked by a red bat in the overworld when it becomes available, if I remember correctly.

And, yes, I believe your assessment about the locked/unlocked doors is correct.
