Nintendo Land Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.1)  by

Twelve attractions. Up to Five Players! BILLIONS OF FUN MOMENTS!

The game is finally out and I've already taken it for a spin. My sister and I tried all the 2+ player attractions and so far I like Animal Crossing Sweet Day, Mario Chase, and Zelda Battle Mii the best.

This is going to be a hell of a game for Nintendo fans with a lot of fan service I suspect.

Anyone agree? What are your favorite attractions? Least favorites? High scores? Low scores?

Do tell! Do it here!

1.) Normal (Centered) -- 2.) Tilting Shows Weird Matching -- 3.) Look How Drastic It Is

See, this is not normal. When I move the gyro sensor on the gamepad, Yes the viewpoint should match on my TV, but the screen should remain "full frame" and show me the area around me still. It shouldn't be doing as this is, and omitting that information and simply mirroring my gamepad entirely. That black background should not be seen. This wasn't the case before. Is this happening to you then? and you say I can turn it off? Then how?

That's how it shows up for me too. I didn't think anything was wrong though--if it mirrored your GamePad exactly, wouldn't things get really dizzying?

@TriforceBun

Really? How did I not notice this before then? Before I could use the pad to tilt my camera like on the gamepad but still it would just lock the outer bounds to my tv's frame. It wasn't any more dizzying than any other thing (say the Zelda Arrow minigame).

I must be effing crazy.

Edit: Well, watching this on youtube from a video that was put up two days ago... I guess this was the normal. Son of a bitch I never noticed it... it looks kinda shitty IMO. But alas, a minor gripe. Carry on everyone!

I got to play some 4 player Mario Chase and Animal Crossing Sweet Day tonight. I love them. And my sister is a sore fucking loser, wow. The Luigi's Mansion one is my least favorite overall game I think right now.

Man you want to see sore losers, play with my nieces and nephews. They always want to be Mario, and whoever is Mario almost always gets caught, and then they always start screaming when they get caught. And that is when I make sure to sit RIGHT next to them so I can grab the controller before it gets thrown across the room.

Except the oldest, she seems to be learning how to accept defeat. Kind of.

I have not had the time to read through this thread yet. I still have not taken the Wii U out of it's box. I have read a few posts and impressions from other sites and it appears that the game is much better than what people thought it would be. My only concern is, I will be the only one playing this game. My youngest son starts Mortician school in Pittsburgh, Pa near the end of Jan. My oldest son, I never hardly see anymore. He has his own life, he is 20 and dad is just not part of his plans anymore.

So, its just me. I'm just worried that only a few of these games will be fun with only a single player. I don't think there is any online play,(I could be wrong..I don't think so tho).

Anyways, I guess I need to get this sucker out of the box. I've had it since yesterday. At first I was only taking it from my mom's to run the update on mine and the kids. She then said, I could have it now, but just realize that there is nothing else for Xmas. Hell, I don't give a shit about getting stuff for Xmas anyways. My mom can be anal like that though, she loves buying people stuff, esp. for the holidays, but she has this thing where it has to be on Xmas.

But, I need to get this thing out of the box if I want to play it.

Edit: Ok, Just read all the posts...so I guess there is no online. But, is there any online leaderboards for any of the games, esp. if one is playing single player? Also, I think it was Ploot's post about another level in the DK game...he mentioned he wasn't aware there would be another course, and I think he mentioned Trish got to it first...Anyways, I was always assuming there would be more than just the one course. Actually, I am think there should be several courses in this game, like ten or more. Seriously, if there was just the one or even if there is only 2, I think that would be really cheapass of Nintendo. I don't care that there is like 12 attractions, esp when most of them are geared to multiple players, even though most, except a few can be played by a single player.

I guess I need to quit wondering about all of this and open the damn box already. It just all seems like a big ordeal though, plus, I guess I'm not looking forward to the update. Watch my power go out or something in the middle of the update. Seriously though, since I moved here in May of 2011 the power seems to go on and off like a couple times a month for no reason. My mom lives up the street and she says that has been happening for a long time. Its a really nice neighborhood, not to old of one. So its not like the lines are old, ect. But the power does seem to go on and off more than it should.

Like in the old place I used to live for around 12 years, power only went off when there was a bad storm, probably in that 12 years power went off maybe 5 or 6 times, of course I would be without power for like an hour or so. Here though, the power has went off like 20-30 time in about 18 months. Though, it only goes off for like 1 or 2 seconds and then its back on, but it will be enough to shut the Wii U down. Man, I wish I would never have thought of that.

@gamewizard65 What I've been hearing on the internet is that if you opt not to do the update right away, it'll download in the background while you play a game. When I set up my Wii U, I skipped the update at first and played games for an hour or two, and then when I finally did it, it only took about ten minutes. Strangely enough it doesn't give any indication that it's downloading in the background, so I was curious why it downloaded much faster for me than for anyone else, so I imagine that must be the reason.

Anyway, maybe try doing that if you're worried about it taking too long.

@DrFinkelstein It's been like that for me since the first time I played Nintendo Land, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to do that.

@rebonack

It's funny then how I never even noticed it was doing that and then after it froze on me a few times, I assumed it was a glitch. Thanks to all for your input!

@DrFinkelstein

It does let you take neat screenshots to post on Miiverse with those different angles though

@gamewizard65

Of the 12 games, 6 are single-player only, 3 are multiplayer only, and the other 3 can be single or multi. Fortunately, the 3 that you can play with any number of players are still a lot of fun in single-player due to the number of levels and individual challenges each of them has.

That said, I think this game still really shines in multiplayer.

I get why people say Wii Sports was better than NL is TO DEMONSTRATE the system, but it is NOT the better game. I played Wii Sports like, 5 times TOPS the entire time I owned it.

I think I put more time in my first two sittings in NL than Wii Sports in 6 years.

Like, I get it, Wii Sports was awesome cuz it was shit simple (is that NECESSARILY a good thing?) for people who next to nothing about games, but NL is 10x the game Wii Sports is. And I think what NL demonstrates is more impressive, it's just harder to express that, since, ya know, it's not "WAVE YOUR CONTROLLER".

So, glad to see Nintendo Land going over well. Kind of curious, though, how you guys feel about the Zelda game. I found it pretty dull when I demoed it, but it sounds like you guys are enjoying it more than I did. Any thoughts?

@kriswright

It's basically Crossbow Training from the little time I spent on it. Not the best game.
11/25/12, 18:31
@kriswright

Single player blows. Mainly because you get swarmed so fast in the later stages. Multiplayer is fun, but the sword guys usually clean shop and the bow guy is left taking out archers or hitting the odd switch every few minutes.
11/25/12, 18:53
@Guillaume

I think its a ton of fun! Have you only played single?

@missypissy

This is rectified when you have the sword player guard during lulls so you don't get left behind by much. Then you both can be up in the action.

I had a shit-ton of fun yesterday with my cousin knocking through the zelda levels. It's better than the recent reviews are giving it.

@DrFinkelstein

The bit that I played was multiplayer, albeit in a noisy show floor with strangers and it just seemed interminably slow, especially compared to Wii Sports Resort's Swordplay mode - which I always loved. I guess it seemed, from my short experience, to be like a slower version of that mode with a bit of Crossbow Training mixed in. Not a recipe for success. Then again, I'm hearing that it picks up after the first bit, so maybe that's the key.

Mostly I just want to know because that little Wii U event was my first (possibly only?) time to have to get impressions from short play sessions on a show floor, and that was one of the few games I would have given an outright negative impression of. I just want to gauge how reliable my first impressions were.

Otherwise, I'm not surprised at the love for NL. Seemed like a solid multiplayer game to me, though clearly not as revelatory as Wii Sports.

Being the archer in the Zelda game is fun. And not just to greif people like Anand does.
11/25/12, 21:04
@Zero

What does he just shoot the swordsman all the time and thus screw with him?

@carlosrox

In the Yoshi game, after getting far enough, it puts warp goals in which help you skip ahead a lot faster. It wont help your score much but it's there for that reason.

@DrFinkelstein Basically, yes. He probably hits enemies occasionally. Possibly by accident.

My wife is hooked on this one. I keep trying to convince her to try a new attraction, like Balloon Fight! But to no avail.

Mario Chase is more entertaining when everyone knows what they're doing, for sure. I think that's one attraction that feels a little too barren if you have less than 5 (or maybe even 4) players.
