The last 2D Mario we will see for a good long while. Will it live up to the hype?

Game is good fun so far, if still a bit safe. I just finished world 2, and the level designs are getting a bit more interesting. I'm kind of dreading the water level, since those are rarely all that fun in NSMB. The HD visuals are a pretty big difference from before, which is nice--great backgrounds too.

Also, the Koopaling order makes a lot more sense here than it did in NSMB2. I mean, Roy Koopa in castle 1? Are you crazy? Lemmy then Morton then Larry and Wendy is more like it.

That said, I still feel Nintendo Land is the premiere launch title for the Wii U.

@TriforceBun

Its the title I am most excited about although Zombi U is pretty up there.

Oh I think there's a way the game can hint at secret levels. I just saw ploot's balloon floating in the middle of nowhere

EDIT: Oh nevermind. Apparently it's balloons for those that beat the game that appears in random spots on the map.

@VofEscaflowne

Press L when you see a balloon on the map and user comments will show up.

I know I just realized the level his message came from afterwards.

Oh, okay, now I understand what you meant.

Made it to the second tower (didn't they used to be called fortresses?), having a blast in 2p co-op with my lady. We also tried boost rush mode, in which I couldn't help but screw her over with blocks, while on the flipside she actually helped me pretty well when I was doing the platforming.

One thing I don't quite like is when she figured out that you can place blocks with the gamepad, she just wants to place them everywhere now. I said it ruins the challenge, but she doesn't really udnerstand the concept. Good thing is, when she places blocks I can just make them disappear by hitting them from underneath. Although I must say the blocks are useful to get the flagpoles at the end. Some of them seem almost impossible without a little help. Overall I'm glad they added this feature, it's like a "Super Guide" of sorts...by the way, is the super guide in?

Pretty sure it is. I've found myself dying enough on a level to have a green exclamation block appear though I haven't used it to check what it does.

Yep, the green block is Super Guide. I've hit it by accident and it asks you if you want Luigi to show you how to do the level. Luckily you can back out.

Sigh... I was hoping not to activate the blocks at all, but the "go back and complete another level" trick doesn't work here. I hope there isn't a sparkly prize for not making the blocks appear!

Finished the game.

With 26 levels beaten.

Only got the flags on my save file from the 5th one, haha!

And now: to see the half of the game that I skipped!

@Guillaume
What the --

And ew! I could never do that!
11/23/12, 21:24
@carlosrox

Well normally I play each and every level, and only move on after finding every Star Coin. But once I skipped from the start to World 5 straight away, I thought: hell, I'm running with this!
11/23/12, 22:27
@Guillaume

Wait, what? Did I miss a secret exit in world 1? I found the one in 2-4 that skips a good bit of the game...
11/23/12, 22:51
@ludist210

You did.
11/24/12, 00:24
Me as a kid: OMG, SECRET WARP AWESOME, WILL GET ME FURTHER IN THE GAME!!!

Me now : I PAID GOOD MONEY FOR THIS, I'M NOT SKIPPING ANYTHING!!!

@Zero

Haha that's basically me too I found a secret exit at one point that would have let me skip a few areas but I kept going back to redo all I would have missed. Of course I would have either way but I didn't want to reach the final battle too fast!

@Zero

Well, when you play a game for fun and not just to get to the end, what happens is that you go back and play the stuff you missed.

Going straight from world 1 to world 5 was a good challenge, I'm glad I did it. Now W2-4 will feel easier, but whatever.

@Guillaume Sort of. But I remember, for instance, loving the hell out of Super Mario Bros. 3, but it wasn't until a long, long time after I "beat" it that I actually went and beat the worlds I rarely went to (6 and 7, for instance.) Hmm, the same with the other Mario games, for that matter. I can't even guarantee that I've played every stage in Super Mario Bros. 2 or Super Mario World.

Of course, I remember 100%ing both Yoshi's Island and Super Mario 64 pretty soon after getting them, so maybe that is about when the shift kicked in.

I think I was just less concerned with being a completionist back then. Now I'm so OCD. I mean, when I like a game. If I don't, I'm happy enough to skip stuff. Kind of.

@Zero

Hahaha, that's the same reaction I had when finding it. I guess that's the sign of a good game, that you don't want to skip anything.

I beat the game yesterday, that last boss battle was exciting! I loved...

stealing the Koopa Clown Car and using it against Bowser and Jr., and also that you can even pick up Bowser Jr. when he's in his shell. Giant Bowser looks glorious in HD.

I only skipped one world (looking back, it was the ice world I think), and towards the last few worlds I pretty much ended up getting the message 'You got all the Star Coins for this world' every time, so that's cool.

The first secret exit I'm looking for is in World 1 that @Guillaume mentioned, but I don't know where to begin searching, other than by going through level by level to see if I spot something...

I'm excited to play the newly opened areas! I think I saw someone make the comment that Nintendo should have named this New Super Mario World, and I couldn't agree more.

Oh, and you guys knew I would do this: I posted a screenshot on Miiverse when you fight Roy Koopa. I think he has one of the best attacks in the game. I marked the Miiverse post as 'spoiler' because it could spoil the surprise for players on what kind of battle it will be.
