Retro Game Club Discussion Thread - 13 Double Header: Metal Slug X & Shinobi III [community]

Why not add Metal Slug X and Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master to your collection, and indicate that you are currently playing them? And don't forget to rate them when you're done!

Metal Slug X (900 Points): This game is an improved version of Metal Slug 2, adding the new “Iron Lizard” weapon that chases enemies and the “Drop Shot” weapon whose shots bounce. It also adds many new enemies and allows players to adjust the game’s difficulty level by changing the position of bosses and other things. It includes several arranged production features such as changed backgrounds and some rearranged BGM. It’s a solidly enjoyable game-play experience that offers Metal Slug 2 fans some new discoveries if they look for differences while they play.

Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master (800 Points): In this thrilling sequel to The Revenge of Shinobi, Joe Musashi finds that Neo Zeed – the crime syndicate he believed he had wiped out two years earlier – is indeed still alive and well. The return of Neo Zeed and its leader, the mysterious Shadow Master, forces Musashi to return from exile and confront the growing evil. As the Shinobi, the master of long-forgotten Oboro Ninjitsu martial arts, Musashi must utilize all his powers to overcome his various enemies. Thanks to his considerable combat skills and special Ninjitsu moves, only the Shinobi can thwart Neo Zeed and vanquish the Shadow Master.

Finite lives? Ug. I'm not sure that I have the patience for those kind of games anymore.
It makes us sound like old fogeys, but I agree with this sentiment.

Finally got around to playing Shinobi III. I decided to try it on Expert mode. It's definitely tougher...I got game over at Mecha Godzilla. I think the life bar is half-size, because I was getting killed in like two hits against some bosses.

Still playing Shinobi III on the PSP occasionally. I now realize that the Easy mode really IS imbalanced, because one of the Jutsus or whatever they're called has you explode (!) and takes one of your lives, but deals tons of damage. You basically don't even have to try against bosses. Just blow yourself up a couple of times and they're toast.

Finally started playing Shinobi III. I beat the first level and I'm on the second part of the second level. It's entertaining but it's no Ninja Gaiden.

With Pikmin for NewGameBer out of the way, I decided to pop in the Metal Slug Anthology and give Metal Slug X a spin.

It sure took me back to the 90's, starting with the overenthusiastic voiceover saying the title to the abundance of sprite graphics. A little too abundant, perhaps, as there's always a lot going on, and sometimes it's tough just to keep track of everything. I also found times when it wasn't easy to tell what was a platform/hazard and what was a background object. There are a few interesting weapons in the game, but the special weapons aren't very plentiful and I was blasting with my pea shooter for most of the game. It didn't take too long to beat the game, with 34 continues used. A decent game, but there are definitely better side-scrolling shooters out there.

Is there any difference between the characters? I tried them all out and didn't notice anything.

The Mrs_ and I dropped Metal Slug X a while ago. We tried three times on Normal with Limited continues, made our final run on Hard with Unlimited contiues. I did 24, she did 30. Tough game!

I LOVE the Killer Whale spot though, and also the Randy Quaid Independence Day ending. "I'm baaaaack!"
