Doc Louis is kicking my ass!

I'm not sure why, but I finally started playing this gamelet the other day. God damn, it certainly is challenging.

Fun, but a bit frustrating. I was about to kick a hole in my TV, so I stopped. How have you gentlemen fared against the good Doctor? (And do you use motion controls, as well?)

This thread was brought to you by the year 2010.

Motion controls? Ouch. Can't even imagine playing Punch-Out with motion controls. You have to have your timing down to the millisecond to succeed in that game.

Anyway I loved it as a Club Nintendo prize, but it really should have been a free, available-to-everyone demo for the game. And Doc is actually pretty tough in the last fight. Took me several tries to figure him out.

I probably should have chose this game over the Mario hat, but I wanted something with cash value. I wonder if they will ever offer it again...

@Mop it up
I never even thought about it, but it's kind of crazy that it was never offered for download again. Although that does make it a much more rewarding Platinum reward.

@nate38
Well, I should clarify that I meant motion controls for the punching. I still dodge and block with the stick and buttons. That's the part that really requires precise timing.

I haven't tried the Balance Board dodging yet. Everyone seemed pretty down on it. Still curious, though.

Doc Louis is ridiculously easy, at least for Punch-Out standards. The final fight is the hardest but still super easy - his animations are slow and he tells you what you need to do most of the time to avoid him ("Duck this one", "Keep em up", "Quick feet!"). The chocolate bar that refills his health, you gotta knock that out his hands.

I think your problem is you're playing the game wrong. Gotta go with NES style, man.

@GelatinousEncore
I totally didn't know that you could knock the chocolate bar out of his hands!

By the way, I have NOT beaten the game proper. I DID beat Mike Tyson's Punch Out, though. Including Mike Tyson!

I might switch over to NES style. I actually started to sweat the other day. It was unpleasant.

Yeah when he shows it off, you gotta high punch it with the proper hand, left or right depending on where the bar is. You get a split second. I also recommend you do it because something funny happens

I've yet to play a Punch-Out game, but I was kind of envious of Platinum members that year. I only made it to Gold, since Nintendo stupidly only lets first-party games give one coins.

@Anand

It was the same with Soda Popinkski in the Wii version...if he took a sip, his health went up. Of course if you knock it out of his hands, he gets enraged.

Yeah, try it NES-style. It's much easier to play that way.
10/15/12, 16:25
Wow, it really IS a hell of a lot easier NES-style. And that chocolate bar is key.
10/15/12, 19:02
I got it, but I never beat it. How were you NOT playing NES style?

--Is THAT why everyone says the Wii one is so hard??? I thought EVERYONE was playing NES style!!
10/16/12, 00:28
@Mr_Mustache Nah, the Wii one is very hard just because it's very hard.

@GelatinousEncore

Really? Hmm. I got stuck on some guys, but after I got past 'em once, I could do it again MUCH quicker.
What hangs you up? (This might be more appropriate for the Punch-Out!! Wii thread..)
10/16/12, 01:55
Yeah, that's the beauty of the game. Once you learn the patterns it's a cakewalk. But learning them enough to be able to beat the guys is no easy task.

Did you play Title Defense? That's the real challenge, the main game is easy.
10/16/12, 02:03
@GelatinousEncore

Yep! I've gone through a few times since, my record gets better every time. I think I can get up to Soda Popinski Title Defense without going down now. Upon losing, I am discouraged, and I turn it off and wait a few months, haha.
10/16/12, 02:13
You are a worthy Punch-Out player indeed my friend
10/16/12, 02:14
@GelatinousEncore

Haha, why thank you. I don't think I'm THE BEST or anything like that though. I definitely can't do the Challenge things.

--Oh, Super Punch-Out!!; one day, I ran through that game back to back to back to... 112-0.

Nothing special happens, haha!!!

Sure you can. They're not that much tougher than the regular game. And most of them are more about experimentation and discovery than "WIN EVERY FIGHT WITHOUT GETTING HIT ONCE" or ridiculous crap like that. You learn some pretty amazing strategies/exploits going through those challenges...
10/16/12, 02:29
@nate38

Well, I should say then that I've been unsuccessful with them to date. They're called challenges for a reason!

I really didn't want to Bogart this thread and turn it into Punch-Out!! Wii stuff. Anando wanted to talk about Doc Louis, which is cool.

I like when he talks about chocolate!
10/16/12, 02:35
I love chocolate. And feel free to talk about Punch Out Wii proper. I mean, it's pretty much the same thing. Except with less chocolate.

Also, no one should ever feel bad about hijacking my thread, because I pretty much try to hijack every thread that I enter. I'm a thread terrorist.

Just popping in to say that I'm in the Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! club.
