Pikmin 3 Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.8)  by
Just thought this title needed an official thread.

Yesterday, while browsing the interwebs at work, I found a hands-on of the game that mentioned something that I had not heard of anywhere else. Unfortunately, I don't remember where it was, but here's the gist...

Pikmin 3 now has an evade move! From Nintendojo "Handy, then, that our new lead character has a nifty dodge ability that sees both him and his band of Pikmin roll to the side in perfect unison whenever danger’s about to rear its ugly head. It took a while to master, especially since there seems to be a small amount of recovery time before you can initiate another one, but it brought a welcome sense of drama to the fights, as well as a greater feeling of control over your large army."

Let's give this launch window game some love! ERRR..... Releases August 4th!

Well, I tried to post the trailer. Thanks Renjaku!

Now lets take a look at Gamexplain of the newest video

@Renjaku

It is? I thought it was supposed to be 60fps. Hmmmmm..

Mission Mode is REALLY ADDICTIVE. Oh man. It's great fun to play these things and go for Platinum, and I'll be sure to go for all Plats eventually. I may be enjoying it even more than Story Mode (which is terrific). So far, Pikmin 3 is really delivering in almost every way. I do miss the Piklopedia and the swarming feature a lot, but it's been great besides that. I'm currently on Day 12 in the third major area (although I still haven't got all my Pikmin types).

How stressed should I be about each day? I mean... I need to find at least as much fruit as I need to survive... but is there a day limit? Or will it just keep going till I beat it assuming I don't perish?

@DrFinkelstein

You can keep going for quite awhile. Apparently, if you collect every fruit, you can actually play a full 99 days.

I have to wonder how some of these reviewers were able to complete story mode in 9 hours. I've played about that long and I think I'm only about halfway through... if that. Of course, I'm not very good and restart days all the time if they don't go exactly how I want them to.

I've gotta say, I finally feel like I have connected with this series with Pikmin 3.

@DrFinkelstein

The original Pikmin stressed me out with the day limit, but this fruit system is so much better. Hell, I currently have 16 days worth of extra juice... seems like it's easy to collect at least one every day while you go about your tasks.

Opened my copy last night, sometime between 8 and 9. Played the first six days or so. I still haven't found Charlie. I did restart the day twice. Once when a boss slaughtered me and another time when I didn't realize until 3pm what I needed to do to progress that day. I think I'll try to restart very little; I don't think the first play through is the time to be really strict on Pikmin deaths. I won't enjoy myself if I keep doing the same day over and over at this point. Thus far, I am enjoying the game. I have a friend who may come over later this month to play co-op with me, in exchange for pizza, so I'm excited for that.

EDIT: Played more last night. I finished day 11 and finally found Charlie. The conversations on the ship between the days are great. I've also really enjoyed both the bosses so far. I lost about 10 Pikmin to the first guy (but I know I'll lose none when I replay it later) and I lost none on the second boss. I think they're great boss fights, though, because instead of losing scores of Pikmin, there's a puzzle to it. It took most of the day for each of the bosses, and it required a lot of thinking and juggling and work.

That's one of the great thing about Nintendo games. A less experienced player could have a lot of fun, perhaps even beat this game, with massive Pikmin loses; but so long as they find enough fruit, they can keep making more Pikmin and force their way through. Meanwhile, a more experienced player, trying to optimize things and doing it differently, can still find themselves challenged. Even with losing less Pikmin in the boss battles, this game seems a lot harder and more involved than the previous two. The more I get used to it, the more I approve. I can't shake this nagging feeling that I'm playing poorly. But instead of feeling frustrated, I'm already thinking about my next playthrough and how different it will be when I've mastered having three commanders.

EDIT2: Guess I'm the only person talking about this game. I beat it about an hour ago. My reported playtime was 6.5 hours. I'll have to check the Wii U's log to see what it actually was. I was on day 46 and collected all the fruit.

Been playing this for the past few days. I'm liking it! It's more Pikmin. Nothing too crazy about it, but I'm enjoying it a lot. Who doesn't love a bit of Pikmin every now and then? I'm liking the story quite a bit though. I'm 12 Days in and just found Charlie. Someone said something a few months ago about how Olimar couldn't be in the next Smash Bros. because he isn't in Pikmin 3, and I thought to myself, "there's no way Olimar isn't in Pikmin 3 in some form." Sure enough!

I've lost 99 Pikmin so far. Guess I haven't been playing as conservatively as the rest of you!

Anyway, this secret code business is a pretty ingenious way of keeping people from trading the game in.

I've got a bit of a stockpile now fruit-wise. Slowly but surely. The icy area when you're initially separated took me a bit though because I didn't realize yellow pikmin could just break those gates like normal. Still, having tons of fun here!

@VickiL

From what I've read elsewhere, the time at the end of game isn't your total playtime (6.5 hours would be too short for 46 days unless you ended most days early). The current theory is that it's the time of day in the game when you defeated the boss.
08/12/13, 15:49
@canonj Could be. I nearly had the guy down when the day ended and only had to hit him a lil' bit before he fell. Jerk managed to kill nearly 19 Pikmin, though. I was getting pretty tired, so, as always, it was my fault. I think I had about 430 dead Pikmin at the end of the game. Nearly 150 from the Quaggled Mireclops, and about 100 from the final boss. I was terrible at the Mireclops...

Finally got it yesterday and played late last night.

Game's a fucking delight.

First Pikmin game I'm fully embracing. I took for granted how charming the game's world is. The music and atmosphere is really underrated, I love the visuals, and the Pikmin themselves are sooo charming!

Can't get enough of this game...so addictive. One more day. Okay just one more. (etc. etc.)

I think I'm nearing the end of the game, so I'm gonna go back and collect all the fruit before I beat it.

Haha, oh yes. Happens to the best of us, bud.

I haven't played in a few days, however, but when I go back, I'll be right in a Boss Fight. Nice!
I worked my way up to him, and got the animation/intro, but no combat was initiated as the day was ending.

I'm ready!

@Secret_Tunnel

Secret Code Business?? Tell me more! (I haven't scoured this thread for fear of spoilers!)

Yeah, I think about how I can't wait to get home and play each day that I'm at work, but I'm always just too tired for games at the end of a shift. I will beat it on my weekend though.

It really saddens me that I do not like this game, or that, I can't seem to break free from whatever is keeping me from liking this game. I really like the premise, and the characters and miniaturized world too, but something just isn't clicking. I have all three games in the series, thinking the next entry to be the one to reel me in. In the first game, I blamed my inability to let a Pikmin die be the reason for my giving up on it (I hit reset every time I lost a faithful sprout). And the second game? Ghosts from the first halted my playing. However, with this third installment, I have all sorts of things I can't get past. I have played just under an hour, but honestly don't see myself going back. The thought of losing a Pikmin is present, of course, but the super short days and lack of being able to explore at my own pace keeps me longing for a different experience, thus sucking the fun out of things. Everyone that plays a Pikmin game seems to love it, and I envy those that do. I want to, too. But, I just can't seem to get over my gaming quirks with respect to this series to see things through. That, and I haven't really enjoyed an ounce of time spent trying to play any three of the series. It's just so maddening not to like something I know I should. This is perhaps the only Nintendo franchise I can't seem to get into. Perhaps I just need to keep playing it until I like it. Even if that day or moment never comes.

@Mr_Mustache

There are secret memos hidden in the game, and when you find them all they form together to make a secret code. Miyamoto called attention to this on Miiverse, but hasn't revealed what the code does yet.

Think about it this way. You can only have 100 Pikmin on the field at any given time. So once you hit a nice amount (which with three pikmin types would be a split like 33/33/34 or 50/25/25 for example,... and then all other pikmin sit in wait. If you worry so much about a pikmin dying then you're worrying about "reserve troops" only. You're letting that get in the way of gaming when it has no real affect on your gameplay except for that little tally. It stinks when some perish but they are designed to. That's like not ever letting your pokemon take damage or faint. You have to just move past this and realize it's inevitable and meant to happen.

How do you feel when you lose a Pikmin?

Finally started playing (!) and this is an amazing version of Pikmin. Feels so uniquely different than the previous ones. More... epic, maybe? Like the title screen/shot from space, for example! I was staring at it thinking "Wow, this is PIKMIN?" Obviously once you get into it there's a lot of that goofy charm, but it seems more grand this time.

I'm having a tough time with the controls, and find myself desperately missing my Gamecube controller. They moved stuff around, right? Something is way different. Plus the lack of C-stick kills me, I used that CONSTANTLY. Oh well, I'll adapt. It's fun enough to keep working at it.

@NoName

I also find the poor little fellows' deaths sad and dismaying. Here's the thing that helps me: They clearly have souls. Their little spirits soar up skyward when they meet their heroic ends, and for someone with the faith background I have I imagine they're off to the better place than this scary, bulborb-infested world we live. So it's okay. They lived fully their little Pikmin lives, and they are happy to have lived, loved, and given their all before moving on to the Pikmin Spirit Realm (where they enjoy all the pellets they can eat and nothing but free gardens to roam with their friends)!

Or you can always remind yourself they are digital constructs with no life to begin with, but I prefer the first option. :)

You're letting stuff in the game that shouldn't stress you out stress you out. Let's say if you played a game like say Age of Empires or Starcraft... would you reset and load the game if all of a sudden a group of units die? In Half-Life would you load every time you take a bit of damage? Yes, either scenario is not good for the player but they're part of the game. You just take your blows and keep going, otherwise you're just sucking up all the fun from the game for yourself. Feel bad for the Pikmin but understand it's part of the game, think of the sudden drop on the line graph as another memory in the game (ah, I remember that moment).

The time constraints are also something you just have to think about and strategize around. It's not about stressing you out but trying to teach you to manage your Pikmin better to become more efficient each day. It's what the game is structured around. I enjoy the timed aspect because it pushes me to multi-task and manage the Pikmin at multiple points. If you don't want to challenge yourself and multi-task and be efficient then apparently Pikmin 3 there's enough fruits so you can just explore anyway, although you're really missing out on a big part of the game and the satisfaction from succeeding at it.

@-JKR-

Yeah, I really like how they embraced the full sci-fi aspect of the Pikmin series in this game. From the opening sequence/title to the ship interludes and the oddly Metroid Prime-ish displays that pop up when you scan enemies.

@NoName

A lot of people go for no-death Pikmin runs, but only after playing the game enough to have the skills to do so. Sorry you can't really enjoy the series, but that happens sometimes. Everyone's going to dislike SOMETHING popular (for me, I just can't get into Kirby's Dream Course). I would give it another hour or two since the game opens up quite a bit, but if you're still feeling funky about it, it might just be best to accept that Pikmin's not your kind of game.
