Pikmin 3 Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.8)  by

Just thought this title needed an official thread.

Yesterday, while browsing the interwebs at work, I found a hands-on of the game that mentioned something that I had not heard of anywhere else. Unfortunately, I don't remember where it was, but here's the gist...

Pikmin 3 now has an evade move! From Nintendojo "Handy, then, that our new lead character has a nifty dodge ability that sees both him and his band of Pikmin roll to the side in perfect unison whenever danger’s about to rear its ugly head. It took a while to master, especially since there seems to be a small amount of recovery time before you can initiate another one, but it brought a welcome sense of drama to the fights, as well as a greater feeling of control over your large army."

Let's give this launch window game some love! ERRR..... Releases August 4th!

Well, I tried to post the trailer. Thanks Renjaku!

Now lets take a look at Gamexplain of the newest video

Next, I'll like to discuss more on Pikmin 3 for Wii U.

In this game, instead of Olimar, who was the main character in the previous Pikmin titles, there are three new main characters. Their names are Alph, Brittany, and the captain, Charlie. They are from Planet Kopi [pronounced Ko Pie], which is facing it's Doomsday due to a lack of food. They set out on their adventure in search of food that can be returned to Kopi.

Due to an accident while traveling, they crash-land and encounter mysterious creatures called Pikmin. With their help, the three travelers start exploring. Their mission is to collect fruit that can be their new food resource while exploring the planet with the goal of bringing the seeds back to their home. As the explorers found from their preliminary research, there were various kinds of fruit there, but it was much larger than expected. They decided to use the Pikmins' help to carry the fruit back to the spaceship. After extracting the seeds, fruit can be converted to juice and can act as a food for the player characters as they explore the planet. If they don't have enough food, they can't continue their exploration. They must use the limited time of each day to explore for fruit.

Night on the planet is dangerous, so you can only explore from dawn to dusk. During this time, it is important to use the different color Pikmin still. Players can divide activities among the different characters and explore separate areas with different groups of Pikmin in order to progress with their exploration. Once you get the hang of it, you can complete tasks within a shorter time frame. Also, if you make mistakes while you play, you can replay the day or revert to an earlier section of the game. The fun of starting over is that you can tap into what you learned in your last play session to more efficiently complete tasks. In the first Pikmin game, the player had to start over again and again to figure out the most efficient way to complete the exploration of the planet in a limited time. But in this game there is no big limitation in terms of the days, so it is more accessible for those that have not played previous Pikmin games. At the same time, experienced players can enjoy the game deeply because the more you play, you get better with the new Pikmin and new courses.

And this [holds up a GamePad] is another one of your assets in surviving the adventure. In Pikmin 3, the GamePad becomes a handy information terminal called the KopPad. As you can see, the area you have currently explored is shown on the map. You can see where the Pikmin and player characters are located. Also, by scrolling the screen with your finger, you can see the details of each area on the TV screen. Additionally, if you scroll the map while selecting one of the player characters, like this, you can move them to a specific location automatically. With the KopPad, you can view the overall map and grasp what each characters and Pikmin are doing on their assigned tasks. At the end of the day, you can see the replay of the entire day. Fast-forwarding and rewinding replay footage to review the day and the number of your remaining Pikmin is a part of your strategy to get ready for the next day.

I'd like to share some information on the game's control as well. We are preparing a few types of game controls that players can choose from. Play control using the GamPad is similar to playing the previous Pikmin games on the GameCube. The game is also compatible with the Wii U Pro Controller. If you have played Pikmin 2 for Wii, you know that the Wii Remote and Nunchuck control scheme makes it easy and intuitive to decide where you want to use Pikmin. With Wii Remote Plus, these controls have become more comfortable. We are mainly focusing on this control scheme today. Also, you can enjoy the full game without the TV by just using the GamePad. You can also play the game with Wii Remote and Nunchuck using the GamePad as a monitor. With the help of Pikmin and the KopPad, can Alph, Brittany, and Charlie save their home planet, Kopi? Today I shared updates on the game's Story Mode, but another time, we will be able to share more on Challenge Mode and the game's multiplayer modes. Pikmin 3 launches on August 4th.

New video! Must watch!

Break is over, and I'm an idiot when it comes embedding things. Anyone edit this in for me? Thanks!

To embed a YouTube clip, you need to do the following.

If your URL is this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg7jO0T-7Cw
Then copy from the = sign to the end. Then place that after the word youtube.
Paste this in the video tag on Negative World.
It will look like this but with brackets instead of parenthesis.

(video)youtube=Cg7jO0T-7Cw(/video)

This...is hilarious. I love these two men!

Bingo mode, WTF!? Looks fun.

It took me a second to realize Miyamoto was saying cherry and not titty.
06/17/13, 07:35
Neither of them are using the Gamepad....is the preferred method of control going to be the Wiimote, with the Gamepad....laying somewhere? I don't have a coffee table.....yet.

Pre-ordered mine today! (£31.49 on Amazon.co.uk)

Nice bump in detail of the ground textures in the final version. Would have loved to have seen the lighting from NintendoLand and MK8 here as well, but I'll be first in line for this.

Bingo mode looks like good, frantic fun, the multiplayer modes actually serve as good incentive for me. But I still have to play Pikmin 2...
06/18/13, 00:05
What is everyone going to be using to play this? I am personally going to use Wii Mote and have the gamepad as a map and just have it lying somewhere for when I need it quickly.
06/18/13, 06:06
I'm really looking forward to this game, more than anything else this year. Miyamoto seems really proud of it, and his passion is infectious. Plus, it just looks like a ton of fun (and gorgeous to boot).
06/18/13, 06:39
The fact that Miyamoto considers this one of his best games has me super excited. I cannot wait for this game to come out in August (why not July, Reggie?!? WHY NOT JULY?!).

I will have a great time!

@Pokefreak911

I didn't like the Wii Remote/Nunchuck in Pikmin 2 NPC, so I am going to use either the Gamepad or I'll pick up a Classic Controller Pro or whatever they call them now. Anything but the Wii Remote.

Can't wait! That video with Miyamoto and Bill was hilarious and awesome. Need more of that in the Nintendo Directs instead of just Iwata talking!
06/18/13, 17:16
I'll probably try out all the control options before I decide (except pro controller because I don't have one). I'm initially inclined towards the Gamepad so everything is right there.

Wahhh!! I'm a Wii Mote hater and I still prefer the Wii Mote for Pikmin! Infidels...
06/19/13, 03:04
I'm not a hater! I'm an equal opportunity disser.
06/19/13, 03:09
@VickiL
Lies! Lies!

Lies!
06/19/13, 03:28
Miyamoto hyping the game up is kind of getting me amped. He doesn't always make such comments about his projects.
06/19/13, 03:53
It's in Japanese, but still some new stuff shown!

06/26/13, 22:11   Edit:  06/26/13, 22:13

Higher quality vid here. The textures and lighting are now looking great. Barring a few low poly desert areas, this is looking gorgeous.
06/26/13, 22:36
Look, you can demo it early

But only on two days. Which means the lines might be long. WTF is with all of these uber limited demos, Nintendo?!

The plus side is that if you preorder the digital version then and there, you get it a day ear... uh oh. Is this Nintendo's first step into Gamestop exclusives?!!?
