What is the absolute worst game that you ever bought? [roundtable]

I suppose you can count gifts too, but I'm more interested in games that you decided you wanted and bought and found out were utter fail.

I don't generally buy crappy games, but I remember years back the Blockbuster by me had like a million SNES games on sale for $10 each right before Christmas. I talked my parents into getting 3 for me, and my aunt into getting 2. 5 games at once! I'm not from a rich family by any means, getting 5 games at one Christmas was insane.

I can't recall what the other 4 were, but I remember generally enjoying them. Super Empire Strikes Back was one of them for sure. I vaguely think that one was a SHMUP... Gradius III or Super R-Type? Maybe?

Anyway, so yeah... 4 were good. 1 was very, very not good. This piece of pure fail:

Why did I get it? Well, I was super big into NHL '94, and saw a game by EA that looked to be the basketball equivalent of that game, so I thought hey I liked Double Dribble and such, this could be pretty good. Also I was getting 5 games at once, so I just kind of grabbed whatever looked ok. Man was I wrong. Everyone in the game moved like they were in molasses. It was borderline impossible to make a shot. I got called for fouls for going near another player. Yada yada. Basically, it was a completely broken basketball game and Double Dribble was like 8,000x the game that this POS was.

Alright, your turn.

This is easy, King Kong for DS. Ugly as sin, broken controls, incredibly glitchy, I don't know how it ever passed certification. I kind a wish I would have kept it just to pop in every now and then and marvel at the tragicness.

King Kong on DS is ugly as hell, for the little of it that I could see. The game is murky, foggy and dark throughout, with no brightness setting. There are no lighting effects in the game. There are torches, but they just sit there on the wall, not even animating. Wall textures would be passable if it wasn't for the bright white seam along most edges that shows the corners of almost every polygon. Characters in the game are drawn with maybe four colors. Luckily, those four colors are brown and tan instead of black and dark brown, so at least you can see them. Not that you'd want to ... the game draws Naomi Watts as having one big, heart-shaped nostril in the middle of her triangular nose. Jack Black looks like a burlap bag -- not even a burlap bag with eyes, just a sack out in the jungle.

I talked a friend into getting Blast Chamber. Felt pretty bad about that...

For myself? I dunno. I'd have to think about it. Red Dead Redemption?

j/k

I never bought it.

I think it was Valhalla knights on wii... Man that game was shit, it's the only game I ever returned in the past 15 years.

@Anand
It's Red Dead that bad? I have it but haven't been able to play it since my PS3 shuts itself down after 10 minutes.

@deathly_hallows
Everyone else loves it. I hate it. It's like GTA, except screwing around isn't fun.

But keep the faith. There'll be a PS3 pricedrop at Wii U launch! All the way down to the mass-market price of $250!

Quest64. Maybe not the worst game ever, but it was definitely my biggest disappointment ever. I couldn't believe an RPG was so effing linear and so damn short. Think I beat it in one day.

Carmageddon 64

Of course, I didn't expect it to be good, so I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, based on your story. The most disappointing game I've bought is Super Smash Brothers Brawl, but I wouldn't rank it as one of the worst.

@Anand
It's $250 now...

We had NBA All-Star Challenge when we were kids. I didn't buy it myself, but it was pretty terrible. And we played the shit out of it.

I suppose public opinion would say this is the worst game I bought. And yes, as a child I bought it new. I actually like it though.

Poor ET's eye is hurtin'

I DID buy this today for a couple bucks, so we'll see. Apparently it's bad.

I shall try it tonight!

HOWEVER, this is a really, really bad game. I paid five bucks for it and I wish I never knew it existed.

This is one of the most broken games ever. It is poo.

Runners up:
South Park for N64 (It cost a hundred bucks after tax back in the day and I bought it).
Madworld for Wii (Blah).
Shinobi for 3DS (WAH).

I generally buy good games myself, but I have picked up a few stinkers for sure (sometimes on purpose like Mario Pinball, but that's different).

@Mop it up Hmm... I'm more interested in "worst" than "disappointing", because disappointing often just ends up a bunch of good games that didn't click with people for one reason or another. Which is interesting too, but a different thing entirely, I think.

Although of course a game can be both the worst game one has bought and the most disappointing. I'm not sure that I'd call NBA Showdown the most disappointing game I've bought though, it's not like I was highly anticipating it or anything. Really it was my 5th choice of the 5 games...
09/22/12, 02:58
Mad World, really? Man.

I must buy a lot more shitty games than you guys (actually I'm sure I do, I bought dozens of bargain DS games... I'd buy almost anything for $5).
09/22/12, 03:08
@Zero Well I'd argue that it isn't a good game, but in any case, the vast resources of the Internet help a lot in avoiding bad games these days. And when I was younger, I don't recall us getting bad games since my parents bought us the popular ones like Mario, Zelda, etc. So there isn't much that comes to my mind, as thinking about it, I've done a pretty good job avoiding them.

Though I just thought of another one, 10-Yard Fight on the NES. It's so slow, and I don't think it follows the standard rules of gridiron football, so it's definitely the worst football game around. If I looked over my NES collection I could probably be reminded of some more bad games as well.

@deathly_hallows
To be fair, Mad World was more disappointing than bad although it did come across as rushed. The commentary would have been funny if it didn't repeat itself over and over and over and over...

Damn it. I was going to post this. Worst. Game. Ever.

EDIT- Also, I bought LOL.

@ploot
Yeah, to me disappointing is a whole 'nother category, sometime good games can be disappointment even if they're different than you had hoped or expected. Just like bad games can be really fun!
09/22/12, 03:38
Based on Zero's definition of "worst" instead of "most disappointing," I guess it would have to be one of the following games:

-Metalhead (32X)
-Kolibri (32X)
-Bubsy II (Gen)

But I'd still rather play any of those than Bit.Trip Complete (most (personally) disappointing game eva!)
09/22/12, 03:40
@Deerock69
Yeah! You know it. Seriously. I dare anyone to find a worse game. King Kong is garbage. Haha.

Also, you think LOL is bad, King Kong got a 28.

@NinSage
Wha??? Bit.Trip is AWESOME. Why u no like?
