Pros and cons of transferring WiiWare, VC, and game saves to the Wii U. [roundtable]

Has this been discussed much yet? I feel like it's pretty important, mostly for one reason: Disappearing Gamecube controller support.

Like, for instance, N64 games on the VC. Will the new Pro controller be supported? Even so, what are the odds of scrounging together four Classic Controllers for multiplayer fun? Hopefully, you can pick and choose what to move, like on the 3DS, because I'd definitely rather leave that stuff on the Wii. Super Nintendo VC stuff doesn't seem like as much of a problem. The VC releases max out at 2 players, right? And the GCN pad was kind of a shitty substitute in a lot of cases, anyway.

As far as game saves, copying them to the Wii U shouldn't erase them from the Wii, right? Even the NON-transferable stuff like Mario Kart and Brawl? Losing Gamecube controller support in those games would definitely hurt, as well.

I can't think of too many downsides to transferring WiiWare, offhand. I'm sure there are a few games that support the GCN pad, though.

So what are you guys going to do with your Wiis, post-Wii U? I might finally mod mine and maybe ditch the Gamecube that I kept around to play import games. I mean, what the hell, right? If those saves really aren't able to be duped on two consoles, then maybe I'll mod the Wii before the U comes out to back them up, if it doesn't fuck up the transferal process.

God damn, 'transfer' is a tricky verb to conjugate, spelling-wise.

Well, saves are a go, I guess, but it seems that the Wii - > Wii U transfer is all or nothing. That kind of sucks. Particularly for N64 multiplayer games.

Has it been confirmed if the uncopyable saves will transfer? I haven't found an answer to this anywhere.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that everything transfers.

I'm not going to assume that's true, though. I mean, people assumed that you could use SD cards for Wii U storage, and that turned out to be false.

I didn't buy anything online with the Wii so this doesn't faze me. Only saves i want to carry over as well are TP and SS.

@carlosrox
Please tell me what games used the left side of the N64 controller because I have yet to see them. The Gamecube controller is my favorite purely because it is functional and does what it has to do while being comfortable at the same time.

Now it seems that the Wii money that transfers over can only be used for Wii software...

Is there even a reason to make the transfer now? Any disadvantage to putting it off for a while?

@Anand

I am transferring as my Wii is pretty much dead, the disc drive is really loud and I am getting those green squares everywhere. I will probably trade in the Wii once I pick up the Wii U and put it towards Black Ops or Zombi U.

@warerare
That's a good reason...

I was planning to transfer and homebrew, but now I don't know.

I could never give my Wii away. It's the only way I can play GameCube games in 480p, so I'll keep the Wii hooked up for that purpose. And because I don't want to lose GameCube controller support for Wii and VC games, I'm not going to transfer my stuff over to the Wii U, at least initially. Maybe in a few years.

The only downside to keeping the Wii hooked up is that I'll need to keep at least one of my Wii Remotes synced to the Wii. I only have 3 Remotes currently, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do about that since there will definitely be times that I'll want to use all 3 of those controllers on the Wii U.

Is that verified? Because I've got a random amount of points lingering (like 300) and I haven't spent them on anything yet...

Looks like I won't even bother to do the transfer, the only reason would be if I was getting rid of the Wii, which I'm not. I'll still be playing Brawl with Gamecube controllers until Smash Bros U comes out
11/12/12, 21:47
@Anand The reason would be if you wanted to have one system hooked up to your TV instead of two. I don't know what other reason backwards compatibility would be for. There's no disadvantage in waiting and doing it later if you decide you want to, the transfer is not a limited time offer.

@ludist210 It's been verified. The Wii Shop is separate from the Wii U eShop, so you can't spend Wii Points on the eShop and you can't spend eShop balance on the Wii Shop.

Here's something that makes me confused as all hell. Here's a portion of the Wii U's capabilities running Wii games...

Wii Menu

- launches the Wii U into a Wii Mode
- Wii U-specific functionality is turned off
- gives access to the Wii Shopping Channel
- includes a Wii U app to go back to the Wii U Menu
- also has Wii System Transfer app

Source

So say I go into the Wii Shopping Channel and buy a game. Where in the hell does it go???? Supposedly Wii U specific functionality is turned off. OMG....

@Abdooooo

I suppose this means that the Wii Shop Channel and the eShop are not integrated. And that to access VC games, you need to be in Wii Mode.

Assuming that means that the eShop, Wii Shop Channel, and their respective content are segregated... that seems pretty shitty. Hopefully I'm wrong.

@Kal-El814 No, you are correct, that is exactly how it is currently set up.

I imagine that there will be an update in the future that combines the shops. Remember, the 3DS didn't even launch with a shop, so this is just how Nintendo are doing it to ensure that Wii compatibility is there day one.

I don't need to transfer right away. I'm not planning on getting rid of my Wii since it's basically my only Gamecube. I was looking forward to playing VC games on the Gamepad, but since that was negated awhile back I'm questioning my need to transfer. I don't really care about the Gamecube controller. I do think it's great, but I only use it for actual Gamecube games.

As of right now I think the only positive aspect of transferring is having everything on one system. As a person who has several consoles hooked up to a couple of TVs, this is not a big deal. I'll transfer once I know more about how everything will work.

@Mop it up

If all games within the eShop work with the Wii U wouldn't having the eShop within Wii mode be unneccessary? Gosh, it's like logic doesn't work over there.
11/13/12, 08:42
@Abdooooo

The eShop isn't available within Wii mode. The Wii Shop Channel is.

Hopefully Mop it up is right and this is corrected in a software update, because the implementation as it currently exists seems really sloppy.

When I do xfer some games, it will only be certain ones to start off.. I'm not getting rid of the Wii anytime soon so my Wii/GCN/N64 will be down in the basement hooked up to one TV while the Wii U will be upstairs to the main HD TV.. More flexibility that way - However, as soon as my Wii starts showing any signs of dying, I'll be xfering my stuff over ASAP.

@Smerd

I am the other way, and will light my Wii on fire as soon as humanly possible and do my best to forget it ever existed.
