Guys don't ponder too much on this or let it derail the thread but I picked up RE Revelations for free today using a voucher and if I trade it in coupled with reward points gained through my XL purchase I can get NSMB2 for nothing. Given that I am not the biggest fan of traditional RE do you think this is a no brainer?
Not sure. Haven't played Revelations and not sure how valuable those reward points are. This is a pretty average to below average Mario, though the coin rush mode might be where the real juice is at (still an open question, to me). I guess it depends how much you like the big M. I'd say Revelations is likely to come down in price sooner than NSMB2, though. So if you can wait on it, I'd say it probably makes better financial sense to go with Mario. Assuming the used game situation is similar in the UK to how it is in Texas.
My 11740 run started with 2-5 in which I nabbed the golden fireflower, then the invincibility stars, with which you can rack up 50 coins per baddie if you keep the star going for a while. I missed the second star coin though, oh well. Second stage was the 2-ghost house, pretty straight forward, I actually feel like this stage didn't have many coins, but maybe it did. There are a lot of spots where you can run to that will make coins appear elsewhere. Lastly it was 2-castle in which I stupidly lost the spring in the second half, so I missed out on the last red coin and the third star coin.
No. There's nothing about the gameplay that's online, not even leaderboards. That there is DLC doesn't qualify as "online". At least I think that's how most people understand "this game is online".
@warerare Revelations is a fantastic game, but so is NSMB2, if I had to choose one that would be really tough, especially since they are so different and both represent the kind of diversity I like to see in a system's library.
I'm really pretty damn unimpressed with this game... it's a half effort, I'm not into the level design, there aren't enough power-ups, I question why the raccoon tail is even in the game, the coin gimmick is uninteresting, and I hate the fact that you can once again hold items... too easy!
It's still decent fun to play through, of course, but I'd rank it pretty low in the series overall and expect it to have about the same level of replay value as the original NSMB did. It's a shame, because NSMB Wii was fantastic.
Hopefully the real development effort went into NSMB U and this was just a money grab (how appropriate). Guess we'll find out pretty soon.
The problem with the way NSMB handles held items can be traced back to how many hits each one gives.
In Super Mario World, you get one hit per Fire Flower or Leaf, instead of two like in later games (and the USA version of SMB3). When you hold items in NSMB1 and 2, you can die, use the held item (usually a Flower or Leaf), and then hit a nearby item box (one is pretty much always at the beginning of the stage or a checkpoint flag), and immediately have two Flowers/Leaves on your person, rather than being Super Mario with no held item. It's kind of hard to describe, but it's an easily-abusable system with the DS NSMB games.
On the plus side, it does let us hold onto Golden Flowers to use them in any level. The Golden Flower is awesome.
I mean storing them on the touch screen. That has always been a bad idea that makes the games less satisfying to play. The storage system of SMB3 and NSMB Wii is much better.
Exactly. Item holding worked well in SMW because of that. I thought that the whole reason we have the option for super guides and items that make you invulnerable was so that these games could continue to provide a challenge to veteran players, but now they are already going back to pussifying gameplay as well.
I'm already worried about NSMB U for the same reasons.
Heh. Hate to sound so negative, but it upsets me to see Nintendo neuter their modern games.
