I believe I've owned every Madden on a Nintendo console since 2001 (with the best being 2005, I might add) and this is the version I've looked most forward to in a long time with the launch of the Wii U. I even owned it twice in 2006 when the Wii was released! It's unfortunate "we" won't be able to play with the new "Infinity Engine" they are using with the 360 and PS3 versions but it seems like it's going to be a massive upgrade to the Maddens we have played on the Wii.

"EA is bringing many of the key Madden 13 features to Wii U, which is being developed by a dedicated team. Ideas like Total Control Passing, Girdiron Club and the new commentators are on the way. Plus the integration with Wii U's GamePad will allow players to make faster play calls, substitute players and create custom hot routes on the fly, changing the way sports fans will interact with a Madden game. Another key feature being brought to Wii U is Connected Careers, which allows up to 32 players to form a league. Bialoskursky noted that online is a big emphasis for Nintendo this time around, aligning with EA's own interests for its sports titles. On the downside, however, the Madden Ultimate Team feature will not be present this time around."

I can't wait to use this game with the GamePad!

The Madden NFL 13 Wii U version will utilize the tablet controller in various ways. During a match, players can quickly swift through the interactive playbook to call plays on the fly. They cal also use the Wii U stylus to trace the route for a player to run on the field. The Madden NFL 13 Wii U version will also include most of the regular game modes, including career, manage a team, Connected Career mode, and online multiplayer as well. However, the game will not support the new Infinity physics engine, as developer EA did not have enough time to implement this feature.

The idea of being able to choose your play without your friend in the room being able to see or draw pass routes on the GamePad is awesome. I can't wait. See you online with the RAIDERS!

I'm excited for a Madden game for the first time in years. I can't wait to play the Wii U version. The lack of the new physics engine is disappointing, but I don't care that the Ultimate Team stuff is missing. I never touch it anyway.

0 interest in sports games. Just wanted to share that.

I was listening to some Nintendo podcast thing on IGN with Fran-goat and they were bitching hardcore about the lack of this new physics engine for the WiiU (this was all during the "looks better than 99% of Wii games" Super Mario Sunshine playthrough). Haven't checked out a Madden game since 03 (when Marshall Faulk was on the cover?) so I don't know what kind of impact this is going to have.

And there's something about that screenshot that just seems...off.

I'm sure it won't make a difference for people that haven't experienced the new physics engine yet. It will probably just look like Madden 12 on 360 or PS3. I think the engine helps make tackles look more realistic instead of falling into the same animations over and over. That's my understanding anyway.

@missypissy I can't really tell where the light is coming from in the shot. It's coming from the right side but there's something oddly simplistic about the way it's hitting everyone.
08/15/12, 03:52
Haha, I'm imagining a world without physics. Players flipping through the air, their arms wobbling and wriggling, jelly-like...

Sort of like Octo-Dad.

08/15/12, 04:01
@MasterSandman IIPretty much. I've played NCAA 13 on the 360 and the physics engine is an improvement, but not so drastic that I could never play a game without it. Now if this game didn't have the passing trajectory changes, that would be a different story.
08/15/12, 04:28
All I hear about this game is that it lacks the physics engine and is therefore inferior to the 360/PS3 version, it's pure negativity on every blog and podcast.

I just hope that when this game bombs EA doesn't use it as an excuse to not make any more games for the platform because I firmly believe this is EA's fault and not the Wii U's for being underpowered (which is what a lot of people are speculating).

To be honest, the touch-screen stuff sounds a lot more intriguing than 'new physics'. I already played Backbreaker.
08/15/12, 04:41
@deathly_hallowsThe statements from the dev team aren't blaming the console other than it being new. Madden never sells well on Nintendo systems compared to the others, but this one isn't nearly as lacking as 06 on the 360 was compared to the PS2 and Xbox versions.

@Anand
I agree with you, the problem is that no one is talking about the touch-screen stuff, the lack of the physics is the main story. It's a damn shame!

@DeputyVanHalen
I know that's what EA is saying, but it's easier for the pundits to bash the Wii U than it is to blame EA. Even Fran from IGN (on the latest NVC) was acting like this is somehow proof the Wii U isn't even as powerful as the 360, although he was willing to admit that maybe it was equally EA's and Nintendo's fault, it being a combo of new architecture, short dev time, and weak hardware.

It's been a long time since I played a Madden game, maybe 03? I do think that new physics engine sounds pretty cool and I'm bummed to hear it won't be in the Wii U's version. It will definitely make the game more dynamic based on the fact that tackles will affect players differently and there's a chance you can break tackles in different ways in real time. Maybe next year? Maybe the play calling on the tablet will make up for it?

@deathly_hallows

Maybe Madden U 13 was in development for Wii and they ported it up to Wii U?

The tablet play calling is going to be cool. There is a 100% chance that Madden 14 on the Wii U has the new physics engine. They just ran out of time to get it in this year's working with the new hardware.

Also, one thing to be optimistic about for the future is that they did still get the online franchise mode in. That's some indicator that companies plan to take the Wii U's online capabilities seriously.

@DeputyVanHalen
I hope so. If the next Madden for Wii U is a shoddy port as well and EA uses the excuse no one bought 13 so they didn't want to waste any money doing it right I'll want to punch them.
08/15/12, 05:03
@deathly_hallowsI don't see them doing that. Historically the console launch versions of Madden have never been massive successes since they usually come out toward the end of football season and everyone already bought that year's Madden 2-3 months earlier. Now if Madden 14 flops, that might be different.
08/15/12, 05:07
That new engine; I don't know if it was ONE huge engine, or two different things, but I know that there was a deal that they were doing where you can basically "never be tackled" if you're fighting fighting fighting. Which, I think, actually makes sense because you can get tackled pretty weak in the other Madden games. Like, if you get hit in the foot with a hand, you aren't going to go right down..but you'll lose balance down there. Also, when you get wrapped up, you can continue to fight for yards, and even wriggle loose. Again, I don't know if this is all under one physics umbrella or not. Either way, if "the only things" that come from this Wii U game are WUG support w/ plays, improved graphics and audio, appropriately updated rosters and unis, and the possibility of an online multi-year franchise, I'll be one happy camper. (The fact that I had to mention those means that they are all NOT in the Wii version of 12.)

@missypissy

Yes, Marshall Faulk is 2003.

@Abdooooo

Madden 13 is still coming out for Wii in addition to Wii U. I'm waiting for the Wii U version.

@DeputyVanHalen

Is online Franchise mode confirmed? ("Online multiplayer" might only be "online standalone games," which is what the Wii has right now..and it doesn't even come close to being the same as a Franchise/Season experience.) I haven't seen that anywhere.. If so, you had better bet your sweet ASS that the MasterSandman and I will FINALLY get to play a REAL Franchise together. At long last, brother.

--Oh, and whoever else wants to can definitely play with us, too, haha!!

EDIT- Holy S, I didn't know that "Connected Careers" was the league thing. I'm still not "YES" but this widens my eyes.
Don't get me wrong, I buy Madden every year regardless. I'll be there with it on Wii U: Day 1.

@Mr_Mustache

That "Connected Careers" thing definitely looks interesting. So excited for this game!

@deathly_hallows

Oh God, you listed to that thing too? All I wanted was a trip down Mario Sunshine lane and I was treated with all that weird stuff. I thought after the nightmare of the 360's first Madden we'd finally stop and say "EA...oh...yeah" and just kind of begrudgingly accept their failures. His point about it not being as easy to port games over might or might not be true, but damn not many people judge a system on Madden these days. And then we are getting Batman and Darksiders II which push current consoles a little heavier than Madden...

Madden NFL 13 (Wii U) in the database!

And I guess its out tomorrow? Pretty neato!
11/13/12, 00:25
Did / is anyone else picking this up? NW League soon? Maybe?

Last I checked the Database, only one other person OFFICIALLY wanted it. Do we have a real, realistic headcount?
