Let's Have Some Fun: Potential New Characters for Smash Bros Wii U / 3DO [roundtable]

Lots of heady topics on the board lately, so I thought maybe we could use a bit of fun, idle speculation. After all, that's what video game forums do best.

Smash Bros.
Wii U.
Characters.
What do you think?
Who do you like?
Who do you hate?
Who do you think is likely to get a shot, even if you couldn't care less about them?

This thread is to answer questions like that. (I'm sure there've been others like this, but do you really want me to search them up and necrobump 'em? Unless someone fiercely objects, let's just roll with it). Feel free to discuss stages, assist trophies or anything else relating to characters in the game. Have a moveset all written up for that dude from Geist? Let's hear it.

One rule: NO MEGAMAN. We get it. We'd all like to see the Blue Bomber in the next game. We get that the Capcom/Inafune split might keep it from happening. Let's take that conversation as understood and move beyond it.

Oh, I lied. Second rule: NO BELMONTS. Same deal. We can agree Simon or Trevor would be great. Take it as already spoken.

Feel free to venture further into 3rd parties if you must, but I'd prefer if we stick to Nintendo as much as possible. It's harder and more fun that way.

...

What character do I think is a shoe in?

Little Mac.

Punch-Out is a popular, iconic series that every old school gamer knows well. It also had a recent entry, so it's possibly more fresh on gamers' minds than some other NES era properties. Mac's a fighter, so he makes sense within the context of the game. And his boxing style would be fairly unique.

Yeah, he doesn't have a ton of special moves. But he could borrow some moves from some of the colorful boxers he goes up against. I could imagine him with some kind of Great Tiger spin move or Bald Bull charge. I'd have to see it in action to make sure it worked, but it's one possibility. But even if you just stuck to standard boxing moves, he'd still be pretty unique for Smash Bros.

There are tons of other choices off the top of my head, but I don't want to flood the first post with all the fun answers. What do you guys think?

Oh, and another question: Do you think the appearance of a character as an Assist Trophy in Brawl makes them more likely to appear as a playable character? Is someone like Samurai Goroh more likely because we saw him in some capacity last time, or does that not matter at all?

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Well considering the amount of characters likely to be assembled...

"Ah! So you're all together, good! Pyrrhon loves a party."

I'd like to see Travis Touchdown. He's goofy and cartoony enough to get in. For his final smash he could turn into a tiger.

People have been telling Gaijin Games for the past two years to get Commander Video into the next Smash Bros. somehow. Considering the BIT.TRIP games are the face of WiiWare, I don't think that's too far-fetched. I don't know how well-known BIT.TRIP is in Japan though.

Little Mac is a shoe-in.

Oh, and they're really gonna put Geno and Mallow in this one you guys, just you wait, guaranteed.

I know it's a strange choice for a number of reasons, but is it possible for Conker to make an appearance in Smash? Or is he solely owned by Rare, period?

He might not be appropriate because of the nature of Bad Fur Day, but you gotta admit, it would be an interesting choice.

We need another Metroid character and I think Ridley would be good for that.
06/17/12, 09:26
Mewtwo... because Brawl did something blasphemous.

@kriswright
Nope Conker is Rare, like Banjo.

@Stephen

I thought the big argument against Ridley was the scale....Maybe one of the other Hunters?

DS? Don't you mean 3DS? YOU DO REALIZE THAT THE 3DS IS A WHOLE NEW CONSOLE, RIGHT??

Sorry, I just got done reading the thread about CNN, Jimmy Fallon and the Wii U.

...

I'd like to see Mike Jones from StarTropics, but I'd be very surprised if it happened, since the series hasn't had a new entry since the NES, and it was developed in America. How about another Mother character, since the series is so popular over here that Brawl got an additional character from it?

In all seriousness, Ridley. Definitely Ridley.

Travis Touchdown.

From Nintendo's roster: Issac from Golden Sun. I know there are already a lot of sword-wielding characters in the Smash Bros. series, but I think Issac's unique Psyenergy abilities could make for a very interesting moveset. Not to mention he could pull of a really awesome looking Summon for his Final Smash. And if we go with the theory that if a character appeared as an assist trophy in Brawl they could be a playable character in the sequel, then Issac's chances are even better.

He could be a shoo-in. It's shoo-in, right? Not shoe-in? Or am I wrong? What does shoe-in mean, anyway?

Also from Nintendo's roster: I want to see the Elite Beat Agents and maybe Mallo from Pushmo become Assist Trophies. I'm not sure their moveset could justify an actual playable character, but they would work really well as assists. Especially the agents, since that's basically what they do in their actual game: help/assist the action from the background.

Finally, what about Dillon from Dillon's Rolling Western? I think he could make a really fun playable character. Oh, and Starfy from The Legendary Starfy! That game was fairly recent and it sold pretty well, too. I think he could fit in well with characters like Pikachu and Kirby. Finally, (and I understand this is a long shot) but how would you guys feel about being able to play as one of the Excitebots? Eh? Eh?

I also thought about maybe Thomas from Kung-Fu... until I realized that game was actually developed by Irem. Huh. I was under the impression it was a Nintendo game. But I was wrong!

As for third party characters, how about Sparkster from Rocket Knight Adventures? He's fairly obscure but he did have a (sort-of) revival on XBLA. He'd be a really good fit for Smash Bros., right?

I'm also going to suggest (and kind of circumvent Kris' guidelines above) by wishing for Zero. And specifically for Megaman Zero - the one featured in the GBA series. I really, really dug the character design for those games, and his moveset would be perfect for fighting games. And heck, Capcom doesn't seem to have an issue putting him in games, since he's playable in Marvel vs Capcom. And since we're on the subject of Capcom...am I the only one that wants to see Ryu and/or Leon S. Kennedy in the next Smash Bros.?

Finally, I think it'd be cool to have a Final Fantasy character represent in Nintendo's legendary fighting series. Perhaps the Black Mage? What do you guys think? Alright, that's all I have for now, I'll post more if/when I think of more stuff!

Did know you that, originally, in the first Super Smash Bros, they would actually include this little guy?

They would also include Peach, Dedede and some other characters, but due the hardware's limitations, all of them got cut out of the first game.
(If one wants to really go back, the game would be originally be a SNES title called Dragon Warrior and would not include Nintendo characters until Sakurai appeared)
Of course, most of them made their way into the series, some years later.

In my opinion, Meowth has potential. He could be a fast-paced-medium-powered-hitter character, like fox and have slash based attacks. Something tells me if he had got into SSB64, he would be a heck of a combo freak, like Pikachu, of course.
Also, I really like the pokémon itself, waay more than the lame excuse Jigglypuff is for a 2nd character of the franchise in the games. And, given he is from Gen I and how the character from the Anime has such influence (Waaaay more than Jigglypuff in the Anime), they should totally give him a chance.

@HammerLord

Completely agree.

@vids

Hmm... I could dig it. At the least as an Assist Trophy! He could run the cannon from Skyward Sword or fly in on one of those birds.

I actually made a design document for this way back when I was trying to get into the industry. I think this was right after Melee came out. I believe my choices were:

Captain Olimar (made it!)
Wart
Chozo

Of course, I'd probably pick different ones now. Ones that would never, ever happen, like Fawful. Or the dude from Hotel Dusk.

3rd party? Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton, of course.

@HammerLord

Meowth would be a great addition to the series! Also, we all know Jigglypuff got into the franchise simply because of how popular it is in Japan, right?

@Stephen

How about Adam Malk--

@Tranquilo It'd kind of be unfair to play as Samus against Adam Malkovich. "Jump off the edge Samus. BECAUSE I SAID SO."
06/17/12, 19:44
@Zero

"And when you come back, bring me a sandwich!"
06/17/12, 19:49
From a third party, I think including Tails from Sonic wouldn't be out of the question. The blue guy was already in a game and I think his pal's design would lend itself well to some fun strategies.

As for a Nintendo character, Ghirahim please! Cut out a young/toon/whatever alternate link and give us this new bad guy. He has a few different forms, an insane personality, and a range of fighting styles. I think he'd fit in perfectly.

06/17/12, 20:06
I'm more excited about third party options. We at least need Mega Man, a Belmont, and a SquareEnix character. Hopefully this can happen.
