Let me know how you like it, I've been itching for a new Mario Tennis game.

It looks decent in the Gametrailers review. Still, I'm not quite interested enough for a $40 purchase.

I'll be picking this up in about 20 minutes!

I'm so on the fence about this game, on one hand I really want to play it, on the other hand I've heard multiple people who have played it comment that it feels more like a $10 eShop title than a full-fledged $40 game... it's kind of like the pilotwings/steel-diver dilema all over again.

@deathly_hallows

They took out a career mode so it wouldn't surprise me if what you say is true. Damn.

@Marsh
Also every character has the same special shots, and all the gear you unlock can only be used with your Mii, so you can't customize Bowser Jr. for example (who I plan to use almost exclusively).

On the flip side there's the online, which is really cool, although I'm not a big competitive online player in Mario Kart so I doubt I'd play tennis online that much... but if you were into online, and you were cool with using your Mii so you could enjoy all the cool gear and customization, this game could have very long legs.

EDIT: I keep hovering my cursor over the "buy it now" button on Amazon, I have some long plane trips coming up so I could really use a new game... even if it was $30 I'd feel better about it!

It was between this or Rayman: Origins for me. It was a straight-set victory for the limbless wonder.

It's on sale for $29.96 at FRYs right now!

Had to head back over to Best Buy to price match it, but it was definitely worth the 5 minute drive

@kgtennispro
How is it? How is it? How is it? How do you like it?

I will be getting it this week, Target did not have it in stock today.

I played through the first tournament and a few exhibition matches. It's Mario Tennis alright. The gameplay is great, and the chance shorts aren't as annoying as I thought they would be, since they require good reflexes and aren't insanely overpowered. The animations of Mario and crew are really good. I really like the Super Mario Tennis minigame, it's very well done. 'Bout to go online.

@Marsh
What career mode are you talking about, the one in the GBC and GBA games? This one has a single player mode more like Mario Tennis 64 and Gamecube.

@nate38
It was a much easier decision for me since I had 20 bucks in Best Buy credit to splurge.

Let's do it. You host?

Damn! Some tight matches in there. I'll get ya next time!
05/21/12, 06:24
Ok I'm getting OWNED by people online using a "star" character. No more online until I unlock that.
05/21/12, 06:29
@anon_mastermind

Yeah, that's why I stopped using my Mii, and didn't use any star guys against you, heh.

Online is treacherous until you either get a good outfit for your Mii or star a character.

man, I've been looking forward to Mario Tennis for so long... that I've kind of forgotten what it was like, except that I really really liked it on GBC/GBA. I'll have to hype myself up again I think. I wish I had free time again.

haha, boo & boo racquet look cute. No career mode... I kinda liked working my character up RPG-style though. I see all Mario characters... so this is more like Mario Kart where you work up a character instead of a no-name?

I will admit that I do enjoy tennis videogames, esp. if done well. With that being said, I have played previous Mario style tennis games and I think they have all been a blast to play. (skip down to blue hi-lited section if you don't feel like reading all my ramblings)

But, at the same time there is only so much enjoyment I can receive out of there games. Mario Tennis games in the past have offered up many different modes to choose from, which does help extend the playability factor. Also, Mario tennis or any tennis games( at least those that are put together well) can offer endless amounts of fun, but that fun comes from being able to play against other players. And while I might be wrong on this, I even have watched a couple video reviews...I am fairly sure Mario Tennis for the 3DS offers online play, which is a MUST-HAVE in any tennis videogame.

Basically, while I do enjoy tennis videogames, there is something about them that cannot even come close to golf videogames. Not sure what it is. Ive never been into playing tennis in real life, (probably cause I suck and move like an ox), but the same can be said for real life golf. Here we have 2 totally different sports games, one I never got into cause i sucked and other I never got into, cause...well....I just never got into playing golf. No one in my family has ever really played it, except for my brother, who just played it with his friends every now and then for fun.

I will say, that I really enjoy playing miniature golf. I remember when at Myrtle Beach, SC, there are dozens upon dozens of miniature golf courses in Myrtle Beach and I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience. So, every year thereafter when we would go to Myrtle Beach, that is the one thing I would make sure I would drown myself in. Esp. once I became an adult and was able to go there on my own, Mini golf is pretty much the main activity I would end up spending all my free time with and it just so happened, that my girlfriend at the time also enjoyed Mini golf.

Well, I think I got off on a tangent here. My main point being, I would love to own a copy of Mario Tennis, but I just do not feel that these tennis games are worth $40 for handhelds or $50 for console version whereas I have no problem whatsoever forking out the full $$ amount asking price for Mario Golf games. So first I will apologize to all you die-hard Mario Tennis fans, don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the games themselves, I firmly believe that these Tennis games are very well made, cream of the crop games. Its just that I don't feel the tennis games have half of what the golf games have to offer, as far as replayability, depth, ect. ect.

Maybe it cause the golf games typically offer up 18 different holes and usually for each Mario Golf game there is plenty of courses to choose from. So, multiply 18 holes by the number of courses and right there you have a large diverse amount of playing fields, whereas on Mario Tennis, you are always on the same court for that game, only changing courts when the next game opens up.

Also, with golf, you are always on your toes, with the different wind speeds and then having to compensate for which direction those winds are coming from.

I could keep going on, but I think you probably get the point, plus Im sure Ive already bored most people along time ago. Basically, Im saying while I think the Mario Tennis games are great games and I am sure that die hard tennis fans would probably disagree with me, cause I do know there is more to Tennis than just different coursts. Honestly though, at least for myself, I see these Tennis games being worth about $19.99. I would gladly give Nintendo my $20 to play some great Mario Tennis, whereas I have no problem forking out $50 bones for a Mario Golf game.

Honestly though, with online play probably being a given with any Mario Tennis game from here on out, I would love to be part of a HUGE Mario Tournament game, some time down the road. It would be cool to be able to have a ton of us NW'ers start a Mario Tourney, playing tons of games, like to move on to the next round one would have to win 3 out of 5 matches, or something along those lines.

Then at the very end of things, its down to the final 2 players. Basically playing a real life tennis game. I kindof forget how those go, but just to put it in layman terms, the 2 players would play many rounds until the victor is choosen.

And what would be really cool, is if, just like In MK7, how you can watch a race that is already in progress, it would be cool if all those who were involved in the tennis tournament could login to the room where the final tournament games are being played and actually be able to watch the game from beginning to end. Now that would be ultra cool. IM sure I would not be one of the last 2 standing, but I would love to watch the final games and all the matches to see how it all pans out. And while we all know that there is yet to be actual voice chat on the 3DS, it would be cool if this was implemented and we could cheer on our favorite player....or at the very least, if there was no actual voice chat implemented, maybe we could type in words/phrases of encouragement for the one we hope will win the big one!

Ok, thats all I have to say about it. Sorry it ended up being longer than what I initially intended. Basically, Mario Tennis games are worth about $20 and Mario Golf games are worth the $50...imo, that is. That sums up what I said above.
