Retro Game Club Discussion Thread - 09 - Kid Icarus [community]

Gui came down with a case of Lazy Bum so he asked me to make this thread while he recovers. Wish him well!

@nate38

You. skunk. How dare thee!?

--And you told me I HAD to complete it last night! I should get BONUS POINTS for doing that.
Where is Gui? Where are the other 3 people in addition to him?

Man, Kid Icarus is an easy game to beat. Just gotta get past those first three or four stages, and then you're golden. And if you know what you're doing, those first few stages won't be nothin'.

I recently re-beat Kid Icarus via the 3D Classics: Kid Icarus download on 3DS. Ain't no thang.

Kid Icarus is a casual game for babies and grandmas, anybody who couldn't finish it for this Retro Game Club is a chump
@warerare @anon_mastermind @Guillaume
You guys just gonna take that from him!?

@nate38

I don't see why not. They are chumps. Especially Gui.

@GameDadGrant

You know the version you played was easier, right?
04/13/12, 07:42
@Guillaume How was it easier?

I'll probably start up this particular game soon I only ever got to stage 2 or 3 on the Virtual Console version awhile ago, so it'll be interesting to see if I can make it past those initial stages this time around.

I just wrapped up a jaunt through Kid Icarus' second quest (which is easier than the basic quest, but, hey, I earned it. I was using my Wii save state from the last time I beat the game). Time was about 2 and a half hours. Score was in the 600,000's at the end of Skyworld. I'll have to check later on the exact numbers. You can leave it blank, for now.

Got the best ending, with hunky adult bodybuilder Pit winning over giggly schoolgirl Palutena who digs his rock hard abs, while little cupids hurl hearts at them like Chinese stars. Tried to snap a picture of it, but the screen went black before I could. Mumble grumble.

Still love it, even for all the flaws. Pretty fun to see Twinbellows, Hewdraw, Pandora and Thanatos after their characterization in Uprising. I've never been that impressed with them as NES bosses, but Uprising sort of retroactively makes them a bit more awesome.

Had more trouble with Pluton and the Eggplant Wizards than usual. Did some strategic dying at one point because of ol' Plutes. Sometimes you just gotta take a do over. Got Eggplant'd twice, after I'd been bragging that I never get Eggplant'd any more. Boo, humility!

Edit: Final Score - 699600

@kriswright

"Oh, the humility!"

@X-pert74

Playing it right now and there are many differences, for instance you can slow down Pit's descent slightly by holding down the jump button, and the Reapers' pattern is a little bit more predictable. Controls are generally more responsive, too, although playing with the circle pad, it's a little too easy for the game to misinterpret left or right as a diagonal down, and so both times I've died was falling through platforms.

Other than that, though, the game is feeling much easier.
04/20/12, 03:20
@Guillaume You can't use the D-pad? Or is it uncomfortable or wha...?
04/20/12, 03:25
The game is now available, straight from the eShop. No Gamestop voucher buying bullshit. Yeah. Instant buy!
04/20/12, 03:42
Ugh, I ran in circles in 1-4 for like hours. My score is 239,900... and I'm starting 2-1.
04/20/12, 05:53
@Guillaume I assume you'll want to tough it out, but if you need some help with the dungeons, use this:

1-4

2-4

3-4
04/20/12, 06:06
Now I have a huuuuuuuge life bar, and flaming arrows that go the whole screen. Also, I'm purple.

People saying the game got easier weren't kidding.
04/20/12, 06:09
@Guillaume

The purple thing is an eggplant. That's not so good.
04/20/12, 06:34
Pit is purple but not an eggplant! I think it just means I'm powered-up or something.

Anyway, one of the thiefs stole my long arrows, but now I'm in 2-4 and my fire is inactive as well? Even if I still have it in the item screen?

Is this normal?
04/20/12, 06:39
@Guillaume Yes. None of your "special" weapons will work.
04/20/12, 06:40
@Guillaume

Oh yeah, I know.

On top of the stuff you mentioned above, you can also press and hold down the FIRE button, and Pit will just continuously fire off arrows. In the original version, you have to keep hitting 'B' over and over to shoot arrows.

But still, my point stands. The game does get easier after the first three or four stages.
