Just beat the game. Going to start a second run-through later today, in Hell mode.
Overall, I liked it. It's a solid Resident Evil title that probably falls somewhere in the middle-of-the-pack, as far as the whole series goes. It doesn't quite live up to some of the old-school games, but I definitely prefer this to RE5. There's some definite issues that hold the game back from being great, and there are some things that the game does that are totally unnecessary and I'm not sure why the developers felt the need to force them in, but the game does a lot more right than it does wrong. The game takes some cues from the first Dead Space, and while it's not quite as dark and unnerving as that game, it brings back some of the claustrophobic and tense vibe of the original RE games that was largely missing from 4 and 5. I finished at around 13 1/2 hours, and there definitely seems to be quite a bit of replay value.
This is definitely not a half-assed RE game like the on-rails games for Wii. It's a full-fledged RE that holds up well with the rest of the series. A lot of effort clearly went into making this game, so hopefully it garners good sales. I'd like to see a Revelations 2, as well as more survival horror-focused RE games regardless of platform. |

Finished the game last night.
I thought that Assassin's Creed Revelations would be the least revelatory game to feature "revelations" in the title somewhere, but man was I wrong. I cannot believe that in a 12-13 hour playthrough there were less than 30 seconds tying this game to the RE mythos. I'm not a huge RE storyline junkie, but it feels like they didn't even try.
As far as "RE4 style" RE games go, I probably like this one a little more than 5 and less than 4, thanks to the setting. I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if the enemy design was more interesting and varied. The environments were good, though, as was the music.
I did have a beef with a couple design choices. There's a moment where you get ambushed by a strong enemy. You can run right past it into the next rooms, though, and the enemy won't follow you. However, you need to do enough damage to that enemy in the first room you encounter it in order to get it to move on, then you rinse and repeat a few times. But there's nothing that lets you know you should stay and engage the enemy, so I ended up walking around for a good 20 minutes before I went back, damaged the enemy and then forced the next scene. Pretty lousy. Then again, I suppose I should know that these days, survival horror = kill everything.
Also the scanning is annoying.
I haven't played Riot Mode at all yet, I'm looking forward to giving that a go. |
