Rhythm Heaven Fever (Nintendo Wii) Review (9.2)  by

Post your Endless Mode high scores here!

Amidst all the excitement about a certain Capcom 3DS title, a peculiar gem has snuck right up on us. That's right, it's a new game for the Wii, priced at a very attractive $29.99!

Fans of the DS title Rhythm Fever probably have a good idea of what to expect, and should also already be in the know of how fun this series is. To those who haven't experienced it, it's basically a madcap collection of songs, each presented in their own unique minigame. Created by the team that brought you the manic WarioWare series, each of these minigames are highly amusing and come packed with funny and/or cool surprises. You essentially use just two buttons, tapping or holding to the beat, in amusing, inventive ways. In addition, after every four songs or so, you'll encounter a remix stage where you gameplay styles shift rapidly between stages you've done as an original song plays.

The DS game was packed with quite a bit of content for a title like this, and the Wii version promises to be no different. It also supports a 2-player mode! So don't forget about this one, it's sure to be a fun time~

EDIT: Argh, I can never link videos right! Why can't it just be "video tag" (youtube URL) "/video tag"?

Love Rap 2 is one of the hardest things I've played this generation. It took me waaaay too long to get the medal....but it was so worth it.

This game is amazing.

Wow... I really really suck at Monkey Watch... for whatever reason I can't get the rhythm for it. I was doing fine up until then (medals on everything except for Tamborine and the Office game).

@CPA Wei

Sleep on it, and I bet tomorrow you'll be much better at it.

That's what's awesome about this game: you get better at it even when you're taking a break from it.

Shirley and I played this for about an hour yesterday. She really likes it, said it is one of her favorite games yet. Awesome! I kind of expected her to like it, but didn't know she would like it this much. In fact today we were talking about her coming over tomorrow and she kind of randomly said "we can play some more Rhythm Heaven tomorrow." Sweet.

And of course I really like it.

Wish there were more multiplayer stages though. We unlocked like 5 of the normal stages and there is only 1 multiplayer stage unlocked so far.

@Guillaume
Yeah, I decided to take a break for now.

The robot assembly line was my worst game in the first set but after hanging out with some friends and coming back to it in the evening all of sudden I got a medal. Still not close to perfecting it though . So far my only perfect is the double date.

Loving the game though. I'm really into it and always pumped when I really get into the rhythm for the medal.

@CPA Wei

"Screwbots" gave me trouble too, and now it's the only one I've perfected. Ha!
02/20/12, 07:12
@Guillaume
It was the first one I perfected too!

@CPA Wei
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but during the training stages you can press 1 and view a demo. I had to do that for Monkey Watch. Afterward, I got a medal on it. YAY!

@anon_mastermind

Hmm. That other site has this game slotted for June. Maybe thats just a generic "Q2" thing that didn't get updated, kinda like all of the December, 31 releases? To be fair, I saw another site that had it as March. No definitive release date?

I'm loving this game! I'm at the 4th set and stopped after...

Wabadubaduba is that true? Best rhythm game so far. Air Rally was pretty good too.

I played a bit of multiplayer with my girlfriend, and we had fun but she struggled quite a bit. She really couldn't get the Board Meeting timing right. I need to unlock more 2 player stuff.

@Mr_Mustache
Hmm, I'll need to check more sources on this one. I thought it was supposed to launch this month. It might have been pushed back.

I've played a couple of the multiplayer endless games, and they're pretty fun! One in particular (where each player has to alternate button presses as fast as possible) had me laughing more than any game has in years.

Yep, I'm quite glad they included endless games.

Just got all the medals. Time to go for all Perfects now. I figure if I can do 5 a day it should be manageable.

Has anyone else noticed the Micro-Row is pretty much the same thing as Munchy Monk?
02/21/12, 05:14
@Secret_Tunnel There are a lot of semi-retreads. I mean, when you only have two inputs and 50+ songs in each game, you're gonna have some familiar stuff. Though I seem to remember Munchy Munk's pace being much quicker than Micro-Row.
02/21/12, 05:34
Oh wow, Love Rap is brutal. Fo' Sho' is ridiculous. I was really laughing out loud at the mistakes in that one. The off-pitch voices are hilarious.

Still, I beat it and then got superb on the remix. Woo!

So I've "beaten" the main game, but like the DS one, there's still some progress to be made...and then after that, shooting for all medals and (gulp) Perfects.

Overall, I'd say I enjoyed this just as much as the DS one, and the party-related benefits of having it on the home screen are lovely additions. I actually feel the 2P mode is pretty underrated, with a much clearer scoring system in 1P, and even exclusive unlockable games that are quite fun.

The main games themselves are a lively, fun bunch, and they have a good difficulty curve and level of variety. The only thing I miss a bit is the singing characters, like the Fan Club or Frog Hop from the DS one. But there are still several songs with lyrics, and they're all very good (the credits theme is particularly catchy).

Favorite games:
-Ringside
-Samurai Slice
-Cheer Readers
-Air Rally
-Flock Step
-Launch Party
-Exhibition Game

I may actually go for all Perfects on this eventually. It's a rewarding experience and I really want all the songs!
02/22/12, 01:10
Ugh. Going for perfects would be much more fun (and feasible) if the game didn't limit you. Obviously I'm not going to play any of the other 49 games that aren't up for a perfect chance, because then if I accidentally get a perfect on them it won't count. I should be able to systematically choose which games I'd like to play. This kind of design radically goes against Miyamoto's "we don't like achievements because they limit the player" philosophy.

Other than that, fantastic game. Unless the perfect situation gets changed though, I think this series belongs on the handhelds.
