Rune Factory Frontier on the Wii

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Rune Factory Frontier on the Wii!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Since my Wii got wiped in September, I haven't felt like starting over in my file in Rune Factory Frontier. However, having finished NSMBW and not really having the cash for another "holiday title," I decided to jump back into the farmland and give it another go. Lo and behold, I'm addicted all over again, and I now have the hindsight knowledge to keep productivity up a little more than the first go around.

Does anyone else frequently sink a lot of hours into this enticing farm sim/dungeon-crawler? If so, let the discussion begin (and if not, then I'll be very lonely in this thread)!

Right now I'm nearing the end of spring and I've picked up a few cooking and forging supplies from Lute (and saving up to get the ACTUAL forge expansion from Kross). I have several animals, all of them handy in cleaning up my field. In fact, with enough TLC early on, you can end up having your livestock do nearly all the field work every day, a nifty feature.

I'm also struggling a bit with the Runeys, but what else is new? I forget how to reach the bottom layer of the Green Ruins (past those lumpy rocks). Does anyone remember this?

Anyway, I'm having a great time again with RFF; Harvest Moon fans should check it out, as its arguably the most addictive Wii game of 2009 (in my opinion, anyway).

Those flowers with the ridiculously long grow time are one of the few things I don't like about this game. By the time they finally bloom, the game is pretty much finished. Then again, I s'pose you're supposed to plant them when you have awesome Runeys and they grow in like a week or one month at most, but the Runey system is so terrible I just maintained the minimum amount so crops would even grow period.

That said, you certainly don't need the equipment that's made from the flowers. I hardly made any of it and I didn't have trouble completing the game. You can also find some of the flowers as rare drops in dungeons, so you can make some of it without growing them. Just be careful not to accidentally eat an Emery Flower like I did... -_-

As for weapons, I liked axes. My special attack from the axe was taking out most enemies in one hit, and it has a pretty wide range also. Though the strongest weapon in the game is actually the fishing rod, believe it or not... but good luck actually hitting an enemy with that thing! Defence was more of my problem, and it wasn't an equipment issue as I had close to the best you could get, and something that reduced damage from elements too. Monsters just get really strong and dodging becomes important.

Made it to my goal last night...second floor of the Snow Ruins, and got to the shortcut door. There's a planting field nearby and rocks that I can mine, so I'll plant something easy (like spinach) and leave it sitting to keep a rune factory (see what I did there) for help in the future.

Iris Blanche is up to 3 LP, I think I need her to four before I meet Iris Noire. Tomato Juice is my friend...

Really, the fishing rod? Man...I've got a couple of fire staves that help. The steel sickle helped too.

Defense was a big problem for me, too. It seemed like I had the best armor I could have for the area, given that the drops I needed for better armor was in the next place, but I was still getting burned (...) in the fire area. In the end, I just ran for the boss, beat him without a lot of trouble, and moved on.

My magic skill was always low, so at the end of the day, if I had any energy left, I would stand in the living room and try to blow up my house. Good times.

@VickiL

Hey, on the bright side, my wife makes me either Doria or Stew in the mornings (both awesome for healing), so I'm being cautious and making slow progress in the Snow Ruins and trying to stockpile goodies from her. She's a nurse (Lara), so her food is extra nice for me.

Magic isn't my problem. I think it's at level 45 right now, and that's good. I need the fire rods (or swords) to take out the ice generators in there.

Rune Factory is a slow burn, I think they intend for you to take it slow through each ruins and gain a few levels per floor as you explore every nook and cranny. The strong enemies seem to indicate that you're supposed to level up more than you need equipment, though of course both are necessary. I actually like it this way since it feels satisfying to finally get strong enough to blast through tough enemies who were smacking you around, but people who would prefer to do a dungeon in one run may be disappointed.

Though I'd advise taking it slow and gaining levels in the snow ruins especially, because if you're not prepared then the boss is going to one-shot you.

@ludist210

Never got married. I didn't think my spouse would approve of me firing fireballs into the kitchen all night. Cooking is the skill I always get to level 99 first in Rune Factory games, so I probably left Raguna standing around somewhere with a pocket full of mont blanc and sashimi.

Which boss? Iris Noire or the one on the bottom floor (because I'm doing my best to avoid the Noire fight by not getting to the third floor...yet)?

I'm level 46 (?) now with decent equipment. The problem is a lot of what I would like to craft requires platinum or stuff I've never found on monsters before.

Should I be advancing on Whale Island? I think I made it to a part with some boulders rolling down a vine...maybe? It's been a while.

@ludist210 Yeah, the boss at the very bottom.

It's been a while so I don't recall exactly, but I think I completed Whale Island last since it took me a while to figure out how to advance there. I have no idea which one is considered to be the "third" dungeon and which one is the "fourth," but I can say that the Whale Island boss is a huge pain... It could be a good idea to explore both though (if you can advance at WI, I can't remember) as they both have good items, I believe.

I made it past the gate that I saw, and I'm pretty sure the Whale asked me to climb the tower...but the enemies there slaughter me.

My goal tonight is to craft a better fire-type sword and some water/ice resistant equipment so I can advance further into the Snow Ruins.

So bump.

I ran into Iris Noire after getting Iris Blanche up to 4 FP and 4 LP (hint: Iris Blanche loves Tomato Juice, and it's super easy to make) and I thought that would let me avoid the boss fight. Evidently I missed an event or something because I still had to do it. I died the first time, so a reset and load later, I won the fight (which was harder than I cared for it to be, but only had to eat twice to heal HP, ate several Berry Jams to heal RP).

But now, Mist is missing. I'm also reading I don't need to actually "finish" Whale Island or the Snow Ruins...but that the crux of the main story happens now. I'm hoping to beat the main storyline tonight (possibly, since I'm reading the rest of the Snow Ruins and the rest of Whale Island are optional).

I think I need to talk to the whale, try to unlock the door in the Snow Ruins again (where Iris Noire was, she's now reunited with Iris Blanche), find Marco, get the maidens to grow the flowers, take the flowers to the Clock Tower, then fight Gelwein.

I hated resorting to a guide, but when I had to fight Iris Noire, I wanted to see how close I was to the end (without spoiling the main storyline).

Good luck! I was a bit torn about saving Mist, since she was always trying to make me lose Kanno's quiz game by pushing me off the right answer...

Well, I finished the story last night. I entered the last fights (there are two, and no resting between) at level 50, and thanks to Gelwein summoning (and subsequently killing without me swinging a weapon at) the monsters during his fight, I was level 52 when it was all over. I enjoyed the last part of the Gelwein fight because not having to manage my RP made it a lot easier. Plus when all the maidens came in and sang...I thought it was cool. Fitting way to end the game.

So as far as the game goes, I'm finished. Mist is back in town and the Iris twins are re-united. No baby for me and Lara yet, but I'll probably occasionally play when I need a break from other games...or something.
