Rune Factory Frontier on the Wii

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Rune Factory Frontier on the Wii!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Since my Wii got wiped in September, I haven't felt like starting over in my file in Rune Factory Frontier. However, having finished NSMBW and not really having the cash for another "holiday title," I decided to jump back into the farmland and give it another go. Lo and behold, I'm addicted all over again, and I now have the hindsight knowledge to keep productivity up a little more than the first go around.

Does anyone else frequently sink a lot of hours into this enticing farm sim/dungeon-crawler? If so, let the discussion begin (and if not, then I'll be very lonely in this thread)!

Right now I'm nearing the end of spring and I've picked up a few cooking and forging supplies from Lute (and saving up to get the ACTUAL forge expansion from Kross). I have several animals, all of them handy in cleaning up my field. In fact, with enough TLC early on, you can end up having your livestock do nearly all the field work every day, a nifty feature.

I'm also struggling a bit with the Runeys, but what else is new? I forget how to reach the bottom layer of the Green Ruins (past those lumpy rocks). Does anyone remember this?

Anyway, I'm having a great time again with RFF; Harvest Moon fans should check it out, as its arguably the most addictive Wii game of 2009 (in my opinion, anyway).

Yeah, my medicine level is up to 40, and cooking is up to 58. I'm actually getting to the point where I'm enjoying crafting things (whereas before, it felt like a chore). I still am not a fan of the Runeys, though I haven't dropped out of prosperity in a long time (and I have a few days to make sure they're pretty well-set before the Runey eating days start this season).

I'll go try to tackle the boss when I'm home at lunch. I'm only level 39, but I think I have a fighter's chance.

Yeah, the Runeys are pesky, but the good news is that once you have everything in prosperity, it's pretty simple to keep them balanced...

...well, actually, Winter is kind of harsh with that since you can't grow any on your farm, and the frequent snowfalls make it hard to gather them for the Grass Factory.

What I did for awhile with Crafting was gathered up a bunch of Insect Hides in the first floor of the Lava Ruins, then mixed those with my pumpkins to make a bunch of pumpkin heads (which I'd then sell for money). If you have a lot of cash though, it's much simpler to stock up on wool from Erik, throw half of it into the yarn maker, and go to town on making those knit caps.

I just got a pretty major story event near the very end. It was cool as heck and revealed a really neat detail: the different melodies that each girl hums from time to time actually has a sort of purpose.

Well, I did it. I made a Level 5 Katusha for my head before I went in (since my crafting level was close to 30 and I had everything necessary to make one), and my Aquasword and Water Rod did everything I needed. I only used three Energy Drink Ses, and I actually leveled up twice during the fight (almost did a third time too).

So Selphy did sell me the new recipe books afterwards, so I made two Choco Cakes, and I'll give them to Lara over the next couple of days. She'll be at 8 LP very soon (she's one strawberry away from 7 LP). It's not even noon on Winter 4, so I'll likely take care of my Runeys and chop up my field.

Bump. I'm on Winter 13, I have a date on Winter 24 with Lara, and I just got the recipe for the Wedding Bouquet from Stella. I think I can pull this off with a little Formula C in the lowest level of the Green Ruins.

I haven't been able to play the past couple days--had my hands full! Nice job clearing the Lava Ruins.

I should give you a suggestion here--it's kind of a big spoiler, but it's pretty necessary if you want to get the bouquet ready in time for the date:

The White Rose seeds will give you some nice White Roses, but won't do the trick for the bouquet. To get the Blue Rose, you have to plant the White Rose seeds in an outside patch of soil and have them soak up the moon's rays for a few days, according to Iris. To be safe, I planted mine in the spot right outside their tower.

I'm mainly telling you this because if I knew it going in, I could've had the bouquet done in time for the date.

@TriforceBun

Well, I couldn't find Ganesha in time to get the seeds on the 13th, nor would the whale take my Tide Cluster...do I need to do anything special to get him to take it? I'll try again later today...I've got the patch by Iris' house clear, so I'll just use it and toss a little Formula C on it.

EDIT: I got the Baleen. I took my first Tide Cluster up there on a day where he asked me to go check out the Rune on his back, so that's why he didn't give it before. I also planted the white roses, sprinkled on some Formula C, and now I just have to wait for 6-9 days for it to bloom and turn blue. Man, I'm cutting it close to Lara and Raguna's big date...

EDIT 2: Was I supposed to talk to Iris first? Because if so, I blew it...

Okay, so a funny thing happened on Winter 20 with my Runeys. I went to my Grass Factory and had 20 or so water Runeys (which is normal) and one grass Runey (again, normal since I'd just raided it), but then 20 Tree had showed up overnight. Even more odd: there were 60 in the Town Square. Did this have something to do with the Hotpot Convention the day before?

Anywho, I grew a Blue Rose, so I put together my Wedding Bouquet. Just in time for my date on Winter 24! Do I need Blue Roses for anything else?

So I picked this up again after a looong hiatus with the intention of finishing it.

I just finished my first year. I married Lara and I'm still befriending Iris with Tomato Juice (to avoid the fight in the Snow Ruins). My Runeys are a mess because they didn't produce much grass in the winter...which is fine. I've got 7 days to straighten them out before the process starts again.

I feel like I'm cheating a little bit using Snow Ruins maps, but man...it's just too tough. Any good equipment advice?

Can we make this an official game thread too?

From what I remember, Sickles are pretty broken in the game if you charge them. Besides that, you should be working on "forever flowers" if you hadn't started that, as they're necessary to get the best stuff in the game. I had a bunch of them planted on Whale Island's opening cave area and would try to water/fertilize them every day.

@TriforceBun

Where do I find the Forever Flower seeds? Or do I have to make them?
10/03/13, 17:20
@ludist210

"Forever flower" is the general term for those seeds that Rosetta sells in her shop that are really expensive and take dozens of days to bloom. They're worth investing in because most of the best equips use their ingredients.

@TriforceBun

Didn't I use those for my wedding bouquet? Because I've got like eight of them in storage.
10/03/13, 17:33
@ludist210

It sounds like you planted one set of seeds, harvested 9 of them, then used one for your wedding bouquet. It's good that you have more of that particular plant, but it's important to remember that there're a bunch of different types of these so it might be necessary to work on many of them at once. I liked using Formula C on the middle one (and fertilizer) of the plot to get ONE seed much earlier than the rest of them (like a 100-day flower would take maybe 25 days or so if I was vigilant) and craft something good with it sooner.

Say, where's our download week thread?
10/03/13, 17:36
@TriforceBun

Nintendo was slow on the PR this week, had to piece together news as I could find it.

Getting back into this is tough, but I'm looking forward to the challenge. I want to finish. This game is sooooo good. It helps that I can play Off-TV now.

EDIT: So...wait. I can sickle my way through the dungeon? I'll try to get to floor 2 of the Snow Ruins tonight.

I keep buying them, but I never play them. I think I have a problem.
10/03/13, 21:14
@ludist210

It worked for me ridiculously well up to a point. Try taking (or forging) the strongest sickle possible and using its charge up move. It should hit the enemies multiple times for large amounts of damage.

If it doesn't, you may have crafted something stronger by now. But it's worth a shot since everyone's got a sickle.
10/03/13, 21:21
I keep buying them, and then I play them for hundreds of hours. I also have a problem.
10/03/13, 21:21
@TriforceBun

Will check. My time log: 75 hours, 11 minutes. That's how you measure...measure a year.

Started Year 2 this afternoon with a very Gallagher moment: by smashing New Mochi into bits with my hammer! I also planted 9 3x3 plots of level 10 Strawberry seeds on my farm. That should get the income rolling pretty quickly this season.
10/03/13, 21:52
This is one game I totally have to Backlaugust sometime. Although, is it really about "finishing"? Can't you just keep farming forever and ever?

That reminds me, I told Shirley about it once as an example of a "relaxing" game but I don't think that I ever got around to showing it to her.
10/03/13, 21:55
@Zero

You can, but there's an end to the main story. After that, you're free to continue playing as you see fit.

As for relaxing...I'd say start with the DS one. Less to micro-manage, and the dungeons are mapped for you.
