I think he just managed to be far enough ahead that he recovered from taking the shells on the chin. That's the way to do it!
EDIT: Or maybe he actually did dodge 'em...huh, I think I've only pulled that off once in MK7. Use a mushroom or hit a zipper at the right time and you'll zoom out of harm's way.
I played for 3 hours straight online last night. So. Much. Fun.
@WindWaker99 I was far enough ahead. It's tough to dodge blue shells in MK7, much more so than in MK Wii when I could do it every time I had a mushroom.
Now that I have this game we really need to play some battle mode. I keep searching to see if anyone is online but no luck. I did see Octo online and tried to join him but the room was full for the next three races. It keeps you as a spectator until a spot frees up. Pretty nice.

That was fun, though slightly frustrating! I guess "start the game" makes the match...um...start? Does everyone have to press it for the race to begin?
But yeah, I enjoyed that. This is probably my favorite Mario Kart game.
Bah, everything is awful. Communities are HORRIBLE! Paleo joined, and it was awesome, but then others were dropped and then I dropped and then... I gave up!

I was racing on Coconut Mall yesterday when I went from first to last right on the home stretch. Items were flying everywhere!
Does everyone have to press it for the race to begin?
