Really? Not a Wipeout fan, either? I love all that stuff, as long as it's done well. Crash Team Racing is good, too.
I love the aesthetic of Blur. The day-glo neon items streaking through the environment is such a weird juxtaposition. I do wish the driving were a bit more arcadey, though.
By the way, the single-player of Blur is just so-so, even though it looks better than Mario Kart on paper. Multiplayer is where it shines.
Maybe that was my problem, because I think I mostly did single player stuff.
I have played Wipeout HD, and while I do like it better than Blur, it's not as good as F-Zero. I haven't tried CTR. Even Diddy Kong Racing didn't do weapons as well as Mario Kart, but the racing portion was still pretty fun.
Has Nintendo bumped up the aggressiveness of the SpotPass time trial ghosts? I just raced a few and while I could easily place first place before, these newer ones are giving me one heck of a challenge. I have no idea what kind of shortcuts most of them take but at least 3-4 of them get a huge lead me me!
Has anyone had a chance use StreetPass in the Mario Kart Channel? I'm trying to figure out exactly how it works (using my wife's 3DS). Basically you can create your own kart and driver combination and set up your own Grand Prix so that if you StreetPass someone, that person can race against a computer-controlled version of you on the 4 tracks you selected? I guess that's kind of cool.
@VofEscaflowne Yeah, after racing those SpotPass ghosts I watch my replay and I'm wondering to myself "How the heck did they do that" while watching the bottom screen and not seeing them take any obvious shortcuts. They're just fast for some reason, it seems. Too bad you can't watch a replay of them and learn their secret (I guess that would be cheating?).
I played through someone's GP, but I don't think I was racing against him. Maybe I was? I didn't notice. It seemed like a normal GP race to me. I've also raced a bunch of people's ghosts and, well, I don't think they were trying very hard.
@anon_mastermind Well, maybe you are one of those Mario Kart gurus who is a step above the rest of us. I think most of us have countless personal stories of racing very well and being at/near the top and just plain getting fucked though. Some people even kind of like this mechanic. It mostly just annoys me.
The weird thing is that in theory this is supposed to be good for casuals, but considering how frustrated this game makes me, I imagine many casuals getting uber frustrated when they get constantly bombarded by stuff. It's not the most stress-free multiplayer experience out there.
Oh, don't play innocent with me, mister: invariably, after I got hit by a blue shell during a brief time in first place, you'd hit me again while passing me. EVERY. TIME!
I would love to play tonight, I haven't played with any of you guys yet. Unfortunately I'll be a little busy later but hopefully I can find some time to play.
Our cable provider still has a node out in our neck of the woods. The overnight people are out trying to fix it. Without a solid connection, I can barely finish a race (though amazingly enough, I just finished four in a row without dropping, all of them in second place).
I'm still out for online racing until it gets fixed.
Had some fun worldwide races tonight with some 2500-4000 peeps. On the second race, one guy chose Maka Wuhu and annoyingly everybody except me and some other guy glitched, I finished 6th. I was going to quit the group but I hung around for one more, and then nobody ever picked Maka Wuhu again, so we had some really good and tight races. Lowest I finished was 5th out of 8, with a lot of first and seconds.
I was in 1st earlier... until a lightning bolt hit while I was mid-air in a huge hang-glider part in one of the Wuhu races. There is literally nothing to do at that point but suffer. Finished 7th.
