Alrighty everyone, the game is finally out in all primary regions.... IDreamofHime was the first to receive their copy here on the boards. This is the place to discuss it!!!

Welcome to the thread on Negative World where all wondrous Zelda talk can occur. I would recommend that if you wanna talk about deeper-game stuff as we get going, perhaps spoiler-tag it and then describe outside of spoilers where in the game it is. The recent Super Mario 3D Land Discussion Thread is a good example. That'll allow people who aren't too far to read the thread without actually spoiling stuff for them. Just try to be courteous but definitely have fun with the game and discussions!!

Have ye what it takes?

Be sure to hit up the Skyward Sword Game Page and add the game to your collection once you've received yours. Be sure to mark it as "Playing" while you work on it and after you're played it sufficiently, give it a score you deem fitting!

If you've beaten the game, click on over to roykoopa64's Skyward Sword story/ ending discussion (SPOILERS), and general thoughts thread! It's like this thread part deux!!

Question - in Mega Man 3, if I use an E Tank, is it gone forever, or can I get it by replaying a level?

I can not stand how often Fi just comes out and states the obvious.

I mean Jesus Fucking Christ already, I KNOW!

It's super annoying.

I beat the fourth dungeon today, and you know what, I honestly think I'm done with motion controls after this game. I just don't think the technology is fully there yet, and I find it weird that I'm saying this when I was never a hater of motion controls, and they do indeed make certain experiences better. With this game though, I find it frustrating how often I have to recalibrate, hate the lag like when I swing my arm, yet Link doesn't swing until half a second later, making me miss certain slashes. Now before you go and tell me I should check my settings, and look for anything that could be interfering, I already have, everything is perfect, so it's just the tech/game itself. I understand that Skyward Sword was specifically built around these controls, so a standard control option wouldn't have worked, but really there are just too many times where I've wished I had normal controls.

Half second later? I think it has to be some interference or something. I never had that.

Someone point him in the direction of the (endgame) Demise beaten in 28 seconds video. No way the guy anticipates 1/2 a second on every single swing.

TB: Careful, Chuy!

@Zero

Oh it was happening to me a lot today. I'll swing to the right, and my arm is already at the end of its movement, and Link is only beginning his, but of course now the Bokoblin is blocking that area I was trying to hit. I also hate it when I swing perfectly horizontally, yet Link swings diagonally...oh goodie, time to recalibrate yet again. I am so sick of feeling that when I'm in combat, and I miss an attack, or get hit myself that it's the game's fault instead of my own.

Another thing I hate; the constant text boxes that open up when you find something that you've already found, and it happens every singe time you start your game again. OK sure I can put up with it when it's something I've found in a treasure chest, but do I really need it to happen when I've killed a Chuchu, and picked up the slime? I already know what it is! I DON'T NEED A REMINDER! It's such an easy thing to program too.

Oh and the lack of voice acting. I don't care what kind of excuse Nintendo pulls, whether it's because the characters are supposed to speak Hylian, or they don't want people's imaginations of what the characters sound like or whatever; it's bullshit. I'm sorry but if you put this much story, and this much talking into a game, you damn well better have someone to voice those lines; it's so anti-dramatic to have a big cinematic scene, yet it's waiting for me to press the A button to continue, or there's nothing but grunts while the characters lips and mouths move around in silence. I mean Groose for example, I can think of a perfect voice actor for him, and it would be great, a perfect fit; check out Joshua LeBar who voiced Flash Thompson on The Spectacular Spider-Man. Either get some voice actors, Nintendo, or find a different way of telling a story without relying so much on dialogue.

Don't get me wrong though, the game is great, and overall I am enjoying it, but I really do think someone needs to slap Nintendo in the face, and tell them to get with it. We're not morons, Nintendo!

Now that that fanart brings it up, why did Wind Waker break the tradition of female companions in 3D Zeldas?

Well don't forget that for parts of the game, Tetra did act as Link's companion via the Pirate's Charm. Given all that got scrapped in TWW, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Tetra was going to be Link's companion for the whole game at one point during development, and they eventually moved part of that role over onto the KoRL.

@Brick Well I'm just telling you, that is not how the sword swinging works for me (and apparently most people?) at all. So something is up with your setup.
01/11/12, 10:06
@Zero

Well I checked everything; there's no light interference, I checked the Wii Settings, I made sure the Wiimote was flat on the floor when it calibrates, so unless you can think of something I haven't, then there's something wrong with the game itself. Stabbing is the worst, esp. with those monsters that you have to blow open their mouths to stab the jewel within.

Who knows, maybe it's me, and I'm swinging too hard/fast, and the game isn't keeping up, but if that's the case, then why bother with 1:1 control, and that goes back to my complaint that motion control just isn't ready yet from a technological standpoint (after all there's no force feedback, so we can never have an epic clash of blades with enemies Star Wars style).

@Brick
Weird, I found the sword controls were amazingly accurate and immersive. Don't do big motions, use mostly your wrist and a bit of your forearm to do a quick directional swipe, and it should work perfectly. For Bokoblins, swing left-right-left to dispatch them quickly.

Also, the thought of Groose actually talking with an actual voice makes me want to kill myself. Before they do voice acting, they must learn (or want) to write competent stories, characters and dialogue.
What was wrong with Groose? I liked his story arc.

I don't personally think voice acting is suited for Zelda, especially from the non-human characters.

Groose is awesome. He's got the best pompadour in town.

I still feel Zelda's dialogue is too quirky for solid voice acting, but there were definitely moments in the game that were too cinematic for its own good--by that, I mean the cutscenes were movie-like, and the lack of voice acting stands out in those moments a lot more (like in the scene after the sixth dungeon). I don't necessarily think Nintendo has to adopt voice acting, but trying to have their cake and eat it too with the flapping lips and various cinematography techniques makes it feel like they should in those instances.

Weirdly, I had more trouble with the motion controls as the game went on. My biggest problem was the sword swinging diagonally when I swung it horizontally, but upon looking down, I realized that I actually DID swing it at a slight angle without realizing it.
01/11/12, 18:18
@Brick I'm pretty sure you're just not doing something right. At which point yeah, it can be frustrating, but I don't see it as a reason to throw away technology that is already working nicely for most people and should only get better and better with time.

That makes sense, mystery solved!

I figured that was a given, and didn't need to be stated

Another thing that bugs me; not being able to run and slice at the same time. I loved that in Twilight Princess I could run through the grass slicing it up, and collecting the rupees as I went along, but for some reason in this game Link always has to stop before slicing. It slows things down too much. I think so far I enjoyed TP more.

Ehh I don't know, the more I think about it, the more I think I'm done with the motion control fad, and more eagerly await the Wii U which will have more standard controls, with less motion controls. It's weird to say that, but I think that's really how I feel, I mean even the best Wii games didn't even use that much motion controls (Metroid Prime 3 has excellent use, but was minimal, and I don't consider pointing aiming motion controls, Mario Galaxies didn't use them much, DKCR actually was dampened a bit by the little motion control that was in, etc.).

I've been spouting too many negatives though, so here's what I do like:

- the art style is beautiful. So vivid and colourful, and I love how the background melts into a water colour painting.
- character designs. Zelda always has unique, and wacky character designs, and I love it for that. I love the Kikwis in particular, and that little noise they make is so cute (the boss one however looks like a giant scrotum NOW YOU CAN'T UNSEE IT!). People always say they'd like to see a realistic Zelda, which I suppose I wouldn't mind, but not if it gets rid of the wacky, and interesting character designs. Seriously, if a realistic Zelda is ever made, and the characters basically look like those in Skyrim, a bit of the soul of the series would be missing. Zelda is not Lord of the Rings, it is its own thing.
- the dungeons are great, it really shows why Nintendo are still the masters of level design, and I've only done 4 so far, so I can't wait until I do more.
- I actually am liking the upgrading, even if it isn't necessary. It's just sort of a fun side hobby.

They should have dedicated a button (probably B) that you'd have to hold when you wanted to swing the sword, just so that you could release it when repositioning the wii-mote and the game didn't register it as a swing.

Sword controls are mostly great, but I wouldn't say "perfect." I found the most reliable approach is to slow things down, and perform large hand/arm swinging motions if I absolutely needed to go horizonal or vertical. The Twilight Princess approach, of just wrist-flicking (but this time in a general direction) doesn't work well. At the beginning of the game, I was making smaller swings and too often I'd swing diagonally instead of horizontally or vertically. Basically, this is one of the occasions where the exaggerated arm motions you see in the Wii TV spots is the best way to play. For some of the weaker enemies in the game, the wrist-flicking approach works but I had to pay more attention and change my strategy against the game's tougher enemies.

That would have been helpful against Ghirahim.

I still hate those fights.

You know, I've heard this from a few different people but...maybe my own set is just unusual-lookin' or something, but I just don't see it. They look more like giant fuzzy pears to me (the Kikwis, not my junk). Or a really fat spade (the card suit). Really funny-looking new Zelda species overall.

I had to laugh when he was giving you his gift and it looked like he was bending over. I half expected he was either going to crap it out or I had to crawl in to get it.

LMAO Totally saw it before. I like to call him the Nut-sack Butt-crack because he is obviously a large scrotum and has a large cleft between his halves in the rear.

I'm going to go play some more now, and see how the sword is this time. Maybe I am doing something wrong, and if I am I sure would like to know what.

Also,

LOOK AT THAT GIANT WALKING, TALKING NUT SACK!

Yes I realize I sound terribly immature right now, but I just couldn't help but notice it since the very moment I saw this thing.
