Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo 3DS) Review (9.8)  by

Super Mario 3D Land in our game database (add it to your collection/log and rate it!)

Super Mario 3D Land is a platformer that has been described by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a "3D Mario that plays as a 2D Mario game." As such, Super Mario 3D Land combines the elements of traditional side-scrolling Mario titles, such as linear-based levels, with those of the modern open world Mario titles, such as moving Mario in three dimensions and performing a variety of actions.

Similar to the classic side-scrolling Mario games, the objective of each level is to reach and grab the flagpole located at the end before the time limit expires. Super Mario 3D Land utilizes a similar health system to those games, in which Mario shrinks upon taking damage from enemies or hazards, and damage while "small" results in losing a life. The game offers a number of traditional Mario items, such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman, along with new power-ups that bestow a special suit onto Mario that grants him new abilities. Some revealed power-ups include the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3, which allows Mario to turn into Tanooki Mario and attack with his raccoon-like tail and float in the air; the Statue Leaf, which allows him to turn into a statue; and the Propeller Box, which acts similarly to the Propeller Block and the Propeller Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, allowing Mario to reach high places.

There have been a few places where I've wanted to make a running jump off a short platform but it's taking me a few tries because there seems to be a little bit of a delay between when you press the run button and when he actually starts running, probably due to the fact that the run button is also attack if you're wearing the tanooki suit. I feel like in instances like that there would be no problem with Galaxy like controls, you'd just run and jump and not even have to think about it, much more intuitive.
That's just the mechanics of the game. It's like a 2D Mario game, where you have to build a little bit of momentum before you can get the full distance on a jump. It also has nothing to do with whether or not you have a Tanooki suit or Fire Flower.

It's really hard to put down the game once you start playing. I really want to pace myself, we won't have another Mario game in a while anyway, and I was gonna save it for a bus trip this week-end. I'll probably be done with the game by then, lol.

And yeah, I loved that nod, ludist.

Playing a game when you don't want to is the sign of a great game.

Reviews complained about a learning curve with the controls - I don't see it. For me, the controls have worked exactly as expected. I held down the run button from the very start of 1-1, and it's felt perfectly natural to me. I can see how you'd prefer analog running, but I don't think it's a flaw - just a design choice that you don't agree with. Swimming is the same way - it works just like swimming in the 2D games, rather than the 3D games. For me it's fantastic - others might not agree, but I wouldn't call it a flaw, just a preference. I wouldn't complain about the use of a run button in a 2D Mario either, even if it used an analog stick. For me it just feels right, even moving in 3D space.

Honestly, I might be enjoying this even more than the Galaxy games just because of how much it feels like the 2D games. I still think the Galaxy games are better designed and more creative (though the level designs in this game are awesome), but this game is what I have always wanted from a 3D Mario game. It's bringing me back to the NES days like not even NSMB Wii could do.

I'm up to world 7 so far. I don't want it to end, but I'm excited to see the bonus content everyone's been raving about.

Agree with everything.

I've been playing this game non stop since Monday. I can't put it down. I love every aspect of it, the 3D, controls, music. It's all one amazing little package. The level design is great and the difficulty gets up there, but doesn't make you want to pull your hair out, just right I think. I wouldn't put it next to Galaxy but its definitely one of the best Mario games I've ever played.

I've actually found that holding down the run button all the time, when heading into an area you haven't seen before, Mario can be a little too quick. I think it has to do with the more zoomed-in camera that doesn't let you see as far ahead of you as in previous Mario games. So, I'm often letting go of the run button. For shame, I know

I might be going over the top here, but to me SML3D has an almost CGI-ish quality to it at times. Aliasing is an issue, but the lighting, animation, razor sharp textures and 3D give the game world a solidity and clarity that even the Galaxy games didn't have.

Running through all the levels with Luigi. Beat a level in 11 seconds. Guess which one! This game rocks.

I really love the 3D designs of Boom Boom and his new female counterpart. Characters look and move amazingly.

I'm in World 8 but I'm stuck on ONE Star Medal from World 5. In World 5-2. Could someone provide me an answer to the following question? Does it require an item to find? Because the second medal needed the Fire Flower and so in the small area left that is before that second medal, I am shocked to find that one exists there... I don't want to be told what to do but simply if I can access it as normal mario or if I need an item of some kind. Thanks.

@DrFinkelstein

Are you talking about the very first Star Medal? No, you can be small Mario to get that one.
11/15/11, 23:27
@ludist210

Yes that one. Okay. I'll keep playing around then. Is it well hidden or one of those obvious ones you can't believe you've missed?
11/15/11, 23:37
@DrFinkelstein

You're close to it based on what you're saying. It took me a couple of plays to find it too. The medal itself is not well-hidden, but the door to it is.

@ludist210

The door... hmm... I'll report back when I find it.

@DrFinkelstein

It shouldn't take you too long. I mean, you are timed.
11/15/11, 23:48
@DrFinkelstein

Yeah, I got stuck on that one too for awhile as well.

I'm really liking this game. There's definitely room for refinement, but I think this is the right track for the series to be on.

Arg! I simply hadn't jumped high enough in that spot... but I found it!

I got two Super Mario streetpasses today.

I got an item box from each of them (those boxes on your map that have you face a couple of enemies in extremely close quarters, and then reward you with one star coin). They showed up on W1 and W2, so I'm guess you can only get as many as you have worlds unlocked.

They were the exact same as a regular item box, except that each enemy I killed yielded a 1up shroom. Also, I got a star coin from each of them once I killed all the enemies. So I'm kind of confused. Will I finish the game with a surplus of star coins? How does this work?

Don't tell me if it means spoiling the extra content when you finish the game, though.
