Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo 3DS) Review (9.8)  by

Super Mario 3D Land in our game database (add it to your collection/log and rate it!)

Super Mario 3D Land is a platformer that has been described by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a "3D Mario that plays as a 2D Mario game." As such, Super Mario 3D Land combines the elements of traditional side-scrolling Mario titles, such as linear-based levels, with those of the modern open world Mario titles, such as moving Mario in three dimensions and performing a variety of actions.

Similar to the classic side-scrolling Mario games, the objective of each level is to reach and grab the flagpole located at the end before the time limit expires. Super Mario 3D Land utilizes a similar health system to those games, in which Mario shrinks upon taking damage from enemies or hazards, and damage while "small" results in losing a life. The game offers a number of traditional Mario items, such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman, along with new power-ups that bestow a special suit onto Mario that grants him new abilities. Some revealed power-ups include the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3, which allows Mario to turn into Tanooki Mario and attack with his raccoon-like tail and float in the air; the Statue Leaf, which allows him to turn into a statue; and the Propeller Box, which acts similarly to the Propeller Block and the Propeller Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, allowing Mario to reach high places.

@DrFinkelstein

I think she got up to World 3.

I'm through World 4-3 with all Star Medals to this point. Thus far, loving it!

One thing I've noticed is how good the 3D is. I love the option to adjust it for more out of screen pop (up on the d-pad) and more in-game depth (down on the d-pad). It's really a great use of the system's 3D.

The ability to hit coin blocks in rapid succession is a very welcome thing. I actually drain them now! Very satisfying.

Ugh, Amazon.ca hadn't even shipped, so I cancelled and just picked it up at a store. Now to wait until 5p so I can get off work...

And you guys already finished it. What the hell? Is the game as short as the first Super Mario Land or what?

@Guillaume

Psh not at all. But people have done nothing but play. The levels aren't too long and I'm sure if I tried I could beat it in a day, but the same can be said about a lot of games.

@Guillaume

Most of the main levels are short. If you're not trying to collect everything, I'd bet many of them (particularly in the first few worlds) can be finished in under a minute. I'm on 4-4, but I played for a loooong time last night.

It's feeling a lot like New Super Mario Bros. right now, with fewer levels per world, but with much better levels in general.

I told you Amazon.ca sucks for preorders.

I like them rolling spike balls. I got caught off guard a couple times.

Two things to mention--

Try not to unlock the special leaf (when you die five times in a level). If you do, it has a similar effect that unlocking the Super Guide in NSMBW did. I'm talking a permanent aesthetic change of SHAME!

Also, go for hitting the top of the flagpole each time! Apparently the game keeps track of this on the map (a golden flag will appear in the bottom corner if you got it). No idea if this actually unlocks anything though, since I'm only at 4-1.

Dangit, too late (trying to get the third coin in 2-4 cost me more than my fair share of lives).

@TriforceBun

Getting all golden flags does indeed play a role in unlocking something

@Guillaume

Yeah, I'm seeing that, too.. This seems, I dunno....
Is someone going to complete Skyward Sword in two sittings? Cripes.

@kgtennispro

Time to go back for them! lol

Level 5-5 is an awesome stage. It's nothing retro or anything, just great game design.

Man, this game is freakin' fun. It's really grown on me gradually over the past couple worlds (close to the end of world 4 now). There aren't really any moments that blow me away or anything, but it's all very tight and very well-crafted. I really like how the stages feel like little worlds of their own, built around a central theme (like moving platforms, or switches), and have some nice aesthetic details to give them some context and make them feel like more than just, say, SMS's void stages. In a way, it reminds me a lot of SMG2's shorter galaxies, which is definitely a good thing.

The EAD Tokyo polish is shining through, too, on that note. I do miss the orchestral music, but what's here is fitting and fun. An odd gripe with the main theme--it doesn't repeat the refrain before going into the verse. This makes the loop about 30 seconds, which makes the song feel a lot more repetitive than it should. I guess SMB3 had something similar, but its levels generally required less exploration.

It's odd how the worlds aren't really arranged by theme, but I think I prefer it like that. Instead of getting a bunch of desert or snow levels that blend together, we get a mixed batch along the lines of SMW or SMG1/2. But I would've liked slightly more order--a desert, then water, then snow level right after each other just shouldn't happen! That said, the stages are already standing out to me a lot more than NSMB and NSMBW's levels (many of which sort of blend together in retrospect), but that might be the new game smell messing with my mind.

I'm in World 2 and I'm loving it. Just great fun.

Though not related to the game but is anyone else saddened over Nintendo's new instruction booklet style? I mean fold-outs? Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I miss the days when the manual was part of the presentation in many ways.

I'm quite enjoying the EAD Tokyo polish as well. It doesn't feel rushed, and I'm glad we got the game now instead of at launch, if that means it's extra polished.

@chrisbg99
Yeah, I mentioned that earlier in the thread. It's kind of disappointing but it's in line with the "green" philosophy. There's actually a robust in-game manual, just press the home button and select the manual while in-game.

I unlocked the super guide thingy but I didn't use it. Guess there's some aesthetic change somewhere? Aw, poop.

I am almost done the special stages. Just have to beat special world 8 and trounce a couple flagpoles.

It really is sort of too bad that there isn't a "Tanooki-less" mode because a LOT of the levels are designed so well but you can basically hover over the hard parts.

I may actually get to start this game up now. Oh boy!
