Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo 3DS) Review (9.8)  by
Super Mario 3D Land in our game database (add it to your collection/log and rate it!)

Super Mario 3D Land is a platformer that has been described by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a "3D Mario that plays as a 2D Mario game." As such, Super Mario 3D Land combines the elements of traditional side-scrolling Mario titles, such as linear-based levels, with those of the modern open world Mario titles, such as moving Mario in three dimensions and performing a variety of actions.

Similar to the classic side-scrolling Mario games, the objective of each level is to reach and grab the flagpole located at the end before the time limit expires. Super Mario 3D Land utilizes a similar health system to those games, in which Mario shrinks upon taking damage from enemies or hazards, and damage while "small" results in losing a life. The game offers a number of traditional Mario items, such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman, along with new power-ups that bestow a special suit onto Mario that grants him new abilities. Some revealed power-ups include the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3, which allows Mario to turn into Tanooki Mario and attack with his raccoon-like tail and float in the air; the Statue Leaf, which allows him to turn into a statue; and the Propeller Box, which acts similarly to the Propeller Block and the Propeller Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, allowing Mario to reach high places.

I just made it home with my copy. Can't wait to get into the game. Only thing I disagree with is Shiggy's comment that its a 2D game that plays like 3D. From a few levels I have seen, they look like 3D levels to me. When I think of 2D, I think of moving just left to right and I definately saw some levels where Mario can move all over the screen.

@DrFinkelstein

Thanks for sharing the video. Those guys are really good! Plus, since I just finished Mario Land for the gameboy, the music was still stuck in my head. Cool!

I'm in world 3, and I am absolutely loving it. It really does feel like the 3D evolution of 2D Mario. Can't say enough good about it.

Nathalie got it for me as a one day early birthday present and I zoomed through the first world. Fun so far and if I know my Marios it'll get better as it goes. I'm done for the day though.

Slow down, you're moving too fast.
You've got to make the moment last.
Just kickin down the cobble stones
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy

@DrFinkelstein Tell us what you think of that level once you're done. (just that one )

I was pleasantly surprised to see that it records the number of deaths per save file, you can check it out by tapping the little "notes" icon when selecting your file. Also, the slide pad really, really feels good in this game. I've never felt this in control of Mario with an analog stick.

@gamewizard65
The levels all have depth to them, but the "feel" of the game is 2D, rather than 3D. Well, you will find out for yourself soon enough

Impressions for 3-1

It's a fun level! I found it interesting in that to me, it felt a lot more like a Galaxy level than any of the others so far. It feels almost free-roaming till you realize the path but I personally found multiple different paths to take to the flagpole which was awesome. The inclusion of the cannon made me feel like I was playing Super Mario 64 again and the 1-Up cutout totally tricked me. I like the new enemies found in this level as they show some unique creativity, if not in the execution of the enemy at least in the design. Usually both. The music wasn't bad but I didn't find it that memorable either. I never cared so much for the music of 'desert' themed levels though. Still, a wonderful level. 3-2 continues on that path in a whole different... wetter... direction.

@DrFinkelstein I'm sorry. I actually meant 2-3 not 3-1.

Just played through the first world, pretty cool, but the controls feel sluggish to me, I've pretty much been holding down Y the entire time and it still feels a tad slow, and I'm still not sure I understand why they implemented the run button... feels like a little bit of a step backwards from Mario 64 and Galaxy, it's not game-ruining or anything I'd just prefer it the other way.

One thing for sure, the 3-D looks great.

@sirmastersephiroth

I had a feeling after I wrote it, so I'll go back and get you those impressions momentarily.

Impressions for 2-3

This was to me, the first truly challenging level. I didn't die on it at all but to squash those goombas you need some great accurate aiming. It's a lot of fun and the level design is totally great. I read in reviews that people didn't care for the propeller suit but honestly, I felt it was fun just as it had been the last time we saw it. I liked that the level was a "downward" level in the sense that progression is moving downward constantly, despite the fact that going against that grain might warrant you some surprises. The very end that people are talking about, well I too had a similar reaction. It looks great and feels so good to run through. It seriously makes me want them to remake the original Super Mario Bros. in that retro style, though I'm sure people would complain at the fact if it ever happened.

Did you guys go past the flagpole in 2-3? Give it a try

@anon_mastermind

Thanks for the reminder, when I leapt I realized I probably could have but I forgot to go back into the level. Doing so now.

Edit: Well that was cute.

I hate you guys.

That is all.

Went to Best Buy this morning with a friend of mine to get the game for $30 by having them price match Fry's

This game really has taken me by surprise.

I'm up to 4-3 right now, and it's proven to be so much more fun than I expected. My one hope is that the latter stages are a hell of a lot longer. I have this odd feeling I'm going to have it beaten before I go to bed tonight, heh.
11/14/11, 02:01
I was sucking at Level 3-5 and I got an assist block at the begging of the stage after dying a couple of times. And what I got to turn into. I love it, even though it means I sucked.

I'm blasting through it, almost at world 8. D= Galaxy was like this too.
11/14/11, 02:45
World 5-2 spoilerrrrrs.

I loved the Zelda sound playing when you lit all 4 torches to open the gate!
11/14/11, 02:47
Just played for a little while today, and already I'm very impressed with the graphics and the gameplay. The 3D is very deep and so far the best 3D game!
