Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo 3DS) Review (9.8)  by

Super Mario 3D Land in our game database (add it to your collection/log and rate it!)

Super Mario 3D Land is a platformer that has been described by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a "3D Mario that plays as a 2D Mario game." As such, Super Mario 3D Land combines the elements of traditional side-scrolling Mario titles, such as linear-based levels, with those of the modern open world Mario titles, such as moving Mario in three dimensions and performing a variety of actions.

Similar to the classic side-scrolling Mario games, the objective of each level is to reach and grab the flagpole located at the end before the time limit expires. Super Mario 3D Land utilizes a similar health system to those games, in which Mario shrinks upon taking damage from enemies or hazards, and damage while "small" results in losing a life. The game offers a number of traditional Mario items, such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman, along with new power-ups that bestow a special suit onto Mario that grants him new abilities. Some revealed power-ups include the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3, which allows Mario to turn into Tanooki Mario and attack with his raccoon-like tail and float in the air; the Statue Leaf, which allows him to turn into a statue; and the Propeller Box, which acts similarly to the Propeller Block and the Propeller Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, allowing Mario to reach high places.

Does anyone else -shake- the 3DS when they need to jump further? I keep having to stop myself.

I didn't think of Galaxy as really having motion controls but its shake for a double jump is apparently ingrained now. :P

YES!

In fact, I STILL do it, just based on instinct. Galaxy and NSMBWii are embedded in my soul!

So I'm on World 5 now and this is probably my favorite portable video game of all time. And it's in my top 3 Mario games. I have absolutely ZERO complaints...I am in love.

So as stated above, I had 4 profile stars despite still having to get all golden flags including special stages and beat all levels with both Mario & Luigi. So I just got all of the golden flags and... I still have only 4 profile stars. Either my game is glitching, or this is not a requirement for getting all 5 profile stars despite IGN and some other sources saying that it is.

Anyway, it shouldn't take too long for me to finish all of the levels with both Mario & Luigi.

My game time is over 20 hours so far. Including about 8 between the last two days. I've been over at my girlfriend's and she is working on her qualifying exams IE 2 huge papers in 5 days so... Mario it has been for me.

She did play a bit though, played through the first world and some of the second. She likes it but she says it is still tough to figure out a sense of space in the world, she often finds herself jumping off something only to realize there is no ground there, or not being entirely sure which way to go, etc. She also says it is very hard, she struggled a lot to get through some of the early stages. Keep in mind she hasn't played many 3D games period. So, will this game be a success in bringing over 2D gamers into the world of 3D? Hard to say.

Quick question- I'm sure the answer is in this thread somewhere, I just don't want to be spoiled.

Is there any bonus like in NSMB Wii for beating all the levels without dying a set number of times? If so A) What is that number and B) is there indication if I've already passed that threshold on any level?

This game is long! I approve. I think it alone might be stronger than pretty much any single NDS game, outside of maybe Band Bros, Ace Attorney 3 and a handful of others.

100%'d this weekend! Excellent game!

@Zero
Regardless of the profile stars, I do believe you need the flags for the final level.

@Shadowlink
I believe the number is 5 lives. If you don't make the SUPER TANOOKI appear on any levels, then you are good to go for shiny stars.

@ploot

I don't *think* I've seen that yet.

Fingers crossed.

@ploot

Boo, I won't get shiny stars. Oh well, it's a lame reward anyway

Huh, I never used a roll jump to reach a flagpole. But you're right although the triple jump didn't make it that much easier to reach flagpoles in NSMB Wii. I will concede that it is easier in general to reach the flagpoles in 3D Land.

@Zero
If you ever died 5 times on a normal stage you can't get the 5th star, ever.

Is it just me or is the final, final, final level kinda... BS? The final level in SMG2 didn't frustrate me half as much (or maybe I've erased the traumatizing experience from my memory?

I'm using Luigi, though. It's possible using Mario would actually be less frustrating and easier, since my problem here seems to be that I overshoot many jumps.

@Guillaume

Go through it with a Tanooki Suit. Makes it muuuuuch more bearable.

@ludist210

It feels like giving up, though.

@anon_mastermind

No...I died more than five times in a standard level and still got the fifth star. I think you're thinking the glittering stars. The fifth star is for clearing every stage with Mario and Luigi and clearing each stage with a gold flag.
11/28/11, 19:37
@Guillaume

Then I gave up. I got near the end without it, but it was so much easier with. Maybe if I wasn't timed...
11/28/11, 19:37
@ludist210

Yeah, I got my fifth star when I cleared every level with Mario and Luigi. Excluding the final final level.

All people need to know regarding the final level is that you can run across small gaps like in 2D Mario games. That cuts the difficulty of the first section considerably.

If you use the Statue Tanooki during the fireball part then you basically walk through the rest of the level. But then you are less of a man.

Alright! Done 100%, just in time for Mario Kart! Though I do need to pay Shinobi more attention now.
11/29/11, 01:40
Oh yeah, I was thinking of the glittering stars. I lost that possibility long time ago, lol.

@Guillaume
Good job Gui.

I was careful about that shiny shit. When I'd die four times in a level, I'd go hunt some leaves in an easier level. By completing a level, it resets your count. So it was no issue even if I died another 4 times in that original level.
