Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo 3DS) Review (9.8)  by

Super Mario 3D Land is a platformer that has been described by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a "3D Mario that plays as a 2D Mario game." As such, Super Mario 3D Land combines the elements of traditional side-scrolling Mario titles, such as linear-based levels, with those of the modern open world Mario titles, such as moving Mario in three dimensions and performing a variety of actions.

Similar to the classic side-scrolling Mario games, the objective of each level is to reach and grab the flagpole located at the end before the time limit expires. Super Mario 3D Land utilizes a similar health system to those games, in which Mario shrinks upon taking damage from enemies or hazards, and damage while "small" results in losing a life. The game offers a number of traditional Mario items, such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman, along with new power-ups that bestow a special suit onto Mario that grants him new abilities. Some revealed power-ups include the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3, which allows Mario to turn into Tanooki Mario and attack with his raccoon-like tail and float in the air; the Statue Leaf, which allows him to turn into a statue; and the Propeller Box, which acts similarly to the Propeller Block and the Propeller Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, allowing Mario to reach high places.

Alright! I finished off the last worlds while on the bus, dying over and over again in the process. Once I got four stars on my file, I had died at least 191 times. Now that's what I'm talking about!

Now what's left to do is... play all the levels again. Heh. I find I don't mind it as much as I thought I would. It's going by pretty quickly. When I got off the bus I was already starting W6 (it was a long bus ride).

Also, the game may be too easy for too long as far as I'm concerned, but the levels aren't bad. They're a lot of fun, so it's a joy to revisit them, and perhaps try to beat your time while you're at it.

Luigi is boss, never going back to Mario! lol

@anon_mastermind

I at first didn't agree at all, but despite the slippery feet he's known for I actually think I prefer Luigi also. The extra height found in his jumps is such a useful thing.

Luigi can be used to severely shave time off some levels.

So when are we going to allow these spoilers in the thread? Because it's getting ridiculous...

@Guillaume
Do you unlock anything once you get 4 Stars? I mean is there any point in getting ever single medal and golden flag besides personal satisfaction?

@Guillaume
Honestly that's why these big discussion threads actually really annoy me.

We should just have different levels of threads or something. Threads for people who just started, halfway through, done? I dunno. That's about the only thing I can think of.

I mean, I'm on World 5 or 6, and a lot of you have already finished it and unlocked a bunch of stuff. I feel we can't even talk properly, and there's still people who haven't gotten where I've gotten. It just makes it really hard to have a conversation.

@deathly_hallows

Well it depends which star's left to get. I don't think you need them all, but personally I still need to do something to unlock the last level.

@Guillaume
I need to read a FAQ, if it's just for fun I'm not going to bother to get every golden flag, some of them are kind of tricky unless you go back with the tanooki suit and that sounds like a lot of work lol.

Concerning spoilers I'm usually super sensitive about such things, for example I won't even go in most Skyward Sword threads. But since Mario isn't really a story-based game I don't care as much... I mean everyone knows the Mario formula, beat the levels, rescue Peach, unlock some hidden levels, get all the stars or star-coins or medals or whatever and maybe unlock some other stuff. To me knowing that stuff ahead of time isn't a big deal, but I can see how others want to be surprised.

@deathly_hallows

I think someone else posted what you need to do already (and spoiler-tagged it, lol), but basically you need every golden flag and every star coin, AND you need to finish every level with both Mario and Luigi, to unlock the very final level of the game.

@Guillaume
Wow, that's intense. Thanks.
11/21/11, 18:55
@deathly_hallows

Yeah, that's what it looked like to me too. But I had been getting the golden flags as I went, so there's that. And as I said, I enjoy replaying the game more than I expect. Finally, getting golden flags with Luigi is easier, so you can kill two birds with one stone.

@Guillaume
That's true, I didn't want to have to go back to earlier worlds just to redo the flags, but if I'm going to have to beat them with Luigi anyway might as well mop up and star coins of flags I missed.

@ludist210

I know, I know. Actually, I only used it those few times and I was at work and I knew my gaming session was about to be over cause there was going to be more work for me to do. And I just wanted to end that world on a good note!

I've been completely neglecting Mario thanks to Skyward Sword. I'll get plenty of time with it over Thanksgiving.

Mario 3D Land is a good game. I've been doing a lot of homework for school, but I managed to play a little and make it to World 5 Castle. However, I do not have enough Medals. Time to go back and get more.

@gamewizard65

Yeah, me too, shiny Tanooki was necessary sometimes.

This game is absolutely sublime. I can't find a single thing to nitpick and maybe a million things to praise. The level design is brilliant and constantly fresh, always engaging. The challenge isn't intense (not yet, I've only tackled a few of the "Special" levels), but it's enough to give your thumbs and reflexes a solid workout. And the Bowser battle that triggers the credits and unlocks the Special levels is absolutely a blast. I love it.
11/22/11, 10:07
So I finished Special 8-3, which was ridiculous. Only having 30 seconds from the get-go plus having giant cosmic Mario chase you throughout the level was brutal, but I finished it...only dying, I don't know, 25 times in the process (my life total finally dipped below 200). So I've finished every level through that one with Mario, all Star Medals and all golden flags. Just a few more before I re-tackle them with Luigi.

@TVandLust

Agreed. That whole sequence was a rush, and I can't wait to replay it again soon.

So I did a little experiment.

My brother is one of those many people out there who doesn't really play videogames anymore but will still play through and enjoy a 2D Mario game (he is especially proud of how fast he can speedrun through the original, which he considers the best game ever made.) I've tried to get him interested in just about every 3D Mario game, but it doesn't work out. He'll eventually get bored or frustrated and refuse to continue playing.

So I brought my 3DS over to him and told him I had a game that I think he'd like. He saw that it was a 3D Mario game and almost immediately handed it back to me... At this point, I had to give him all the lines about how Nintendo made the game for people like him, in order to bridge the gap between the 2D and 3D games... how it was linear, had simple controls, featured the classic power-up system.

Anyway, I told him to borrow it. A few days later, he comes over my place to visit and the first words out of his mouth are "I'm on world 5." I ask him if he is enjoying it and he says "I love it."

TLDR: Nintendo seems to have succeeded. If you can only convince a fan of the 2D games to give this one an honest chance, they just might enjoy a 3D Mario game.

@Hinph

The camera is a huge part of that I'm sure.
