Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo 3DS) Review (9.8)  by

Super Mario 3D Land in our game database (add it to your collection/log and rate it!)

Super Mario 3D Land is a platformer that has been described by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a "3D Mario that plays as a 2D Mario game." As such, Super Mario 3D Land combines the elements of traditional side-scrolling Mario titles, such as linear-based levels, with those of the modern open world Mario titles, such as moving Mario in three dimensions and performing a variety of actions.

Similar to the classic side-scrolling Mario games, the objective of each level is to reach and grab the flagpole located at the end before the time limit expires. Super Mario 3D Land utilizes a similar health system to those games, in which Mario shrinks upon taking damage from enemies or hazards, and damage while "small" results in losing a life. The game offers a number of traditional Mario items, such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman, along with new power-ups that bestow a special suit onto Mario that grants him new abilities. Some revealed power-ups include the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3, which allows Mario to turn into Tanooki Mario and attack with his raccoon-like tail and float in the air; the Statue Leaf, which allows him to turn into a statue; and the Propeller Box, which acts similarly to the Propeller Block and the Propeller Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, allowing Mario to reach high places.

Bout to head out to pick up my copy! Here we go!

I'm not sure if that exact area is in the game, but those blue arrow blocks definitely are. They don't operate in the same way that the Mario 3 platforms did though--you hit them from below and they nudge up in place and stick there.
Yeah those purple blocks are definitely in there Hinph!

Oh, those things. Right.

Anyway, I beat the final level on my first try when I had 2 tanooki suits, even though I feel a bit cheap.

Good game. It's going to be a long wait for Mario on Wii U.

I don't like I am cheating with collecting Tanooki suits. I mean, they are in the game, so why not use the resources that are given to you. Now, I could understand if you didn't want to use the golden leaf suits.

Yeah, not "cheating" of course... I was just hoping that I was skillful enough to beat it with the resources provided in the level. I'm sure I could with many more tries and a lot of anger, but I think I'll pass for now.

Aren't you gonna play the Special Levels? It's like a whole 2nd quest.

@gamewizard65
I usually used the Golden Tanooki suits whenever they were offered to me, they're part of the game too right?! Although it did feel cheap to be invincible.

I didn't use it on the last level though, I picked it up a few times and still died by falling, but then on the run where I finally won I had missed it because the window of opportunity to pick it up is actually kind of small. I even died once or twice trying to get it too so it wasn't really that much of a crutch.

@deathly_hallows

I have. haha.

I didn't mean to rush through the game so quickly, but... well, I'm a little bit unemployed for the winter, so I have a lot of time to kill. Works out pretty great with Zelda coming out tomorrow!

One nice thing about this game is that it seems to have the replayability of the 2D Mario games... and collecting all of the big coins is actually challenging and fun. I'm sure I'll 100% it again some time in the future.

Ooooooh, I was confused, I thought you thought, well you know, you're actually much further than me then. Nevermind everything I posted, I'm dumb sometimes.

Hah, naa. It happens.

I have a lot of jobs going on right now but I think after New Years I'll have a couple weeks to do nothing but play Skyward Sword, probably won't get too far in it until then.

Man I love those periods where you're between jobs or whatever and you have a few weeks or months to do nothing but game. Now that Skyrim is out I keep thinking back to a few winters ago when I played Oblivion for 2 weeks straight, barely even taking showers and eating, it was heaven, haha!

Ive used the gold leaf a few times as well and I really hated doing so, but I lost like 15 lives on one level and I was getting frustrated and really wanted to move along. And heck, I even died once or twice after collecting the gold leaf. Just stupid stuff, like totally missing a platform by being too careless.

I'm through Special World 4 with all of the Star Medals to this point. I want to stop, but I can't slow down...

Though I still have to beat each level with Luigi. Hmmm...

I've completed everything except what Ludist said in his second sentence just over this post.

My game of the year! Fantastic, and did not expect it to be so good. I almost forgot how good Nintendo games are, it had been too long since the last new one that I played. A year I think?

Special world 5 is when the gloves came off, finally, for me. I'm hoping the game will stay this challenging. I've now lost 90 lives or so?

I WAS playing it on a bus, though, so that's my excuse if someone beats me, haha.

@Griptor

That's entirely too long! Though it's forgiveable, since almost none were released...

I've done everything except beat all the levels with both Bros. I finished worlds 1 through 8, and then special world 1 with Luigi. So now I just have to do special worlds 2 through 8 with Mario, since I started playing with Luigi as soon as I could.

We got a double-dose of Kirby goodness in the last few weeks though!

Post-game spoilers: I'm currently at Special 4-2. This game has cut no corners; there's clearly a lot of TLC here, and it shows. Currently an easy GOTY (so far) for me, although I ultimately prefer the Galaxy games overall. Something about amazing platforming mixed with the otherworldly scope and majestic (incredible, outstanding, phenomenal, exemplary etc etc etc) music makes SMG1 and SMG2 set a high, high bar for the series. But SM3DL definitely does a good job being their super-focused, handheld offspring.

I hope Mario enjoys his time in the spotlight, because Link's about to step in on this 2011 party and steal the show. What a jerk.

I go my copy on Friday and still haven't had a chance to play it. It took me 2 weeks to start Xenoblade, I hate getting older!!!

I cleared the main worlds Friday and am working on the specials. Lots of fun to be had by me. Kinda embarrassed of my death count of (currently) 138 though.

The last two worlds have been kicking my ass and I love it, much more in line with what I wanted from the game. I do try to avoid using the leaf though, which I believe unbalance the game.

As much as people bitched about the timed power-ups in NSMB or leaving yoshi behind in NSMBW, I do believe it was the lesser of two evils.

I just got to World S-5 and the difficulty is really spiking, it's not uncommon for me to die many times in a row in quick succession. I just checked my log and I've died 125 times total, I have 90 guys though so hopefully I'll have enough reserves to make it to the end. Has anyone even seen the "Game Over" screen on this game? I'm kind of curious as to what it looks like, do you lose any progress or does it just restore you to the same place with 3 lives? I mean at this rate I could see myself getting a game over unless I go back go to easier levels and farm lives.

@gamewizard65

You can't be the Game Wizard and use the golden leaf!
