Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo 3DS) Review (9.8)  by

Super Mario 3D Land in our game database (add it to your collection/log and rate it!)

Super Mario 3D Land is a platformer that has been described by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a "3D Mario that plays as a 2D Mario game." As such, Super Mario 3D Land combines the elements of traditional side-scrolling Mario titles, such as linear-based levels, with those of the modern open world Mario titles, such as moving Mario in three dimensions and performing a variety of actions.

Similar to the classic side-scrolling Mario games, the objective of each level is to reach and grab the flagpole located at the end before the time limit expires. Super Mario 3D Land utilizes a similar health system to those games, in which Mario shrinks upon taking damage from enemies or hazards, and damage while "small" results in losing a life. The game offers a number of traditional Mario items, such as the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman, along with new power-ups that bestow a special suit onto Mario that grants him new abilities. Some revealed power-ups include the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3, which allows Mario to turn into Tanooki Mario and attack with his raccoon-like tail and float in the air; the Statue Leaf, which allows him to turn into a statue; and the Propeller Box, which acts similarly to the Propeller Block and the Propeller Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, allowing Mario to reach high places.

@ploot

Do you not work or have a life. Hell, I am still on the last level of World 6. I've died like 15 times or more on that level and the last boss for that level is tough. Hell, you had to play through the game twice with each brother and meet all those objectives. I'll be lucky to just have completed the game with Mario, and I am talking the 8 worlds, nothing else, before the podcast this saturday. And then Zelda on sunday.

For me, this Mario 3D Land is just as tough as any other Mario game I have played. Yea, some levels are really easy just like in all Mario games and some are a pain in my ass, just like in all Mario games.

I have a bad feeling I may never ever get to the final, final level. I mean, I will be able to fill all the other objectives except for the not dying more than 5 times on any given level. Plus I have to do it with both Mario and Luigi. its going to be a long time, before I totally 100% the game. If that even happens. I have my doubts.

@gamewizard65

That's just to get shiny stars next to your profile. You can die as much as you want and still get the final final final level, if I'm not mistaken.

I've beaten all the levels and gotten all of the big coins, so I'm not too far behind ploot. Unemployed for the winter...

@gamewizard65
Game took me about seven or eight hours. There are 24 in a day and it came out on Sunday.
I'm glad you're getting more challenge out of it than others, but yeah I both work and have a life.

Yeah, you can get everything even if you unlocked the "super Guide" thing... Except for shiny stars of course.

Hah, great Penny-Arcade. Cripes, I wish I'd thought of that.

@TriforceBun

Ha!

I made it to 8-2 this morning, all Star Medals collected to this point, and all gold flags except for 8-1. I can't put this game down...seriously. It's really, really good!

I'm at the end of World 7, it's really harrd to put this game down, the levels are so short and fun it's really easy to keep saying "just one more level and I'm done, no wait, just one more, just one freaking more!!!"

I've found the difficulty to be at a good level, some of the castles and airships are pretty devilish, definitely not as hard as NSMB Wii, at least not yet, but not a cake-walk like NSMB DS either.

On world 6 at the moment, and I'm finding it ever more trickier to find all the gold coins. I agree with everyone saying this game is hard to put down - for me it's down to not knowing what the next level will be like. It's nice when the worlds have a theme, but it tends to make things a lot more predictable.

6-1 is also an absolutely gorgeous level.

@gamewizard65 Nice.

I think it is a good addition though. My niece was playing the other day and it became pretty clear that around world 2 or so she had met her limits. So her choices would be to keep trying the same levels over and over and over without a chance in hell... or use the super leaf. She likes the super leaf.

@gamewizard65
LOL That was awesome through and through. Best part was the goomba's taunts.

Hmm, just got to the end of World 8 and then found out there was even more World 8! A nice little surprise.

Who is doing the after game content with the remixed stages? Are these compelling? Challenging?

/EDIT Ok got the credits. Wow, awesome end sequence.

So... what next? The special worlds are unlocked but then what is the point of getting all of the coins and flagpoles? And how does Luigi work into all of this!?

@Zero

Dunno about Luigi but I think he's just for fun... maybe.

As for the special levels... play and play now. They're pretty wonderful... at times frustrating even because of an old friend... But definitely worth doing immediately lol.

I thought you had to finish every level as Luigi to get the super special last stage?

But then, I don't see an easy way to check if you've completed a stage as him at all on the map screen. Ploot?
11/18/11, 05:12
@Guillaume If so, would that mean every main level or would it also include the special ones? Either way I don't want to have to play through anything twice! Why would they go back to the Galaxy way of making you replay stuff you already have to unlock the final stage when Galaxy 2 was smart and introduced new content to play instead?!

Hmm, I guess it'd make sense to unlock Luigi before going back and getting all of the main coins, if I'm going to have to play every level again with Luigi anyway.
11/18/11, 05:23
Is there some sort of triple jump? I can't seem to get Mario to jump high/far enough to reach the top of some of the flagpoles.
11/18/11, 05:48
I'm just kind of assuming you need tanooki for some?
11/18/11, 05:52
That would explain it.
11/18/11, 06:07
Just played the Clock level in world 7 - lovely. Took me back to the N64.

I'm only half through world 7, but the sequel to this game has some awesome potential. I really hope they do a straight sequel like Galaxy 2.

@Secret_Tunnel

Squat Charge, then Roll and leap, that'll help on many of them.

@Guillaume

Can anyone confirm that?

There is a way to see if Luigi has beaten a level because it is marked in the bottom right corner, or at least it was once I beat all the special levels as Mario.

Wow, I put in over 5 hours today! This is by far the longest I have played a game in awhile.
