Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (Nintendo NES) Review (8.0)  by

If you ask me, The Legend of Zelda is a stone-cold classic, and fully deserves its own playthrough thread. But the second-largest game in the ambassador giveaway also has its own share of fans. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, despite being the black sheep of the series, has gotten pretty popular over the past few years and its gameplay has generally held up pretty well.

The title is notorious for its difficulty, but personally, I feel that the game is rather fair until the very final areas. While you lose your "unspent" EXP with a game over (and are returned to the starting location), you keep your levels, items, spells, and progress otherwise. And even then, you could always grind a bit to face Zelda II's challenges with greater ease.

So join us, won't you? I'd suggest finishing Zelda 1 first if you've started that, or you can do what I'm doing and run through both games more or less simultaneously--they're different enough that you shouldn't get Zelda fatigue. The appeal of Zelda II is in its challenging combat mixed with rewarding exploration, and it's not nearly as obtuse as some people feel the first title is. Instead, the additional challenge is placed on battling the enemies and surviving long enough to finish each dungeon.

A few hints before you go:

-To start, you'll notice all the caves are rather dark (until you get a special item). You don't have to go through any before you get that item except one in the northeast, above the town of Rauru. But be sure to stop by the town before you head through there, though.

-Make sure you spend your EXP on level-ups when you're getting close to a game over. It stinks losing your last life and subsequently your "loose" EXP. Level-ups, on the other hand, are permanent.

-"LIFE" level-ups increase your defense (not really your life). "MAGIC" level-ups decrease the amount of magic you spend per spell ("16" is one "block" of magic). "SWORD" level-ups increase your attack, and are probably the most valuable.

-Beating a dungeon and putting the crystal in the statue makes your EXP shoot up to the next level, regardless of where it currently is. With clever timing and strategy, you can get a ton of free EXP this way. If you want to wait, you can always jump over the statue area and come back when you want a bigger EXP boost (like if you're getting the last couple levels).

-You can choose to "cancel" level-ups if you're holding out for a different stat, so they don't have to be linear. For instance, if you get 50 EXP and want to save it for the FIGHT level-up at 200 EXP, just hit select to cancel out of the level-up window and bank the excess EXP.

-Some "tiles" on the world map lead to secret areas. Walk all over, especially on tiles that stick out or look suspicious.

Good luck, adventurers, and remember...

IF ALL ELSE FAILS, USE FIRE.

Good advice for life.

So you have to start at the beginning every time you die?

Seriously, fuck this game.

I guess I'll keep trying, but I can't even find the next temple without continually dying and then having to start at the beginning again, let alone make it through.

It's just a relocation, it's not like you lose any progress (minus the unspent EXP). And after a few dungeons, you can start to take shortcuts through the overworld (like breaking the large boulder to the south, etc).

Do not procreate with this game.

It's still annoying though. Especially if they're going to make the damn mother fucking caves and swamps and everything leading up to the second dungeon so damn mother fucking tough.

Except they're not even that tough, I just hate when I die and realize I have to do it all over again. This type of game design is long gone, and frankly I say... good riddance.

The Legend of Zero II

@Zero That's one of the things I hate the most about this game. But playing it again (for the second time this year), I find myself having fun with it all over again. By the way, where is that Exp. grinding spot near the second temple? I'm almost at the second temple by the way.

I beat the 3rd palace last night and leveled up to almost max. Will make the going easier in the 2nd half.

Also on a side note. I remember reading somewhere that a timeline theory put Link's Awakening in the period between going from the West Continent to the East.

@chrisbg99 Where did you grind?

@Zero

Wanna take a bet on whether going back to the beginning gets less annoying or more annoying as the game progresses?

Keep in mind that there's only 7 dungeons in the game, and the overworld is bigger in AoL than in any other Zelda game (at least in scale; I imagine it's still one of the bigger ones, if not the biggest, just in terms of time to progress from furthest point to furthest point), so you're going to go long stretches in the game between some of the palaces.

Yeah, I believe that was NoA's old theory that they had posted on the official Zelda site. It doesn't work since LA's back story makes it clear that LA Link is ALttP Link (having just killed Ganon and saved Hyrule before he set sail from some foreign land where he had been training since the events of ALttP in to come home to Hyrule), but still a fun little idea even if it doesn't fit at all.

@sirmastersephiroth - Before the second dungeon, I did all my grinding in Moruge Caverns (i.e., the caves south of Ruto). Before the third dungeon, I did all my grinding throughout the Death Mountain Trail (i.e., the cave system south of Saria). Of course that was all on my first playthrough. On this playthrough I lucked out enough with P-Bags and fought enough random enemies that I ran into (particularly the Bubbles in the palaces that give you 50 EXP apiece) while regularly trying to get all of the items and spells that I only needed to grind once I had already gotten everything in the game and just needed to go back and beat all of the bosses

So I beat the game earlier today with max levels (and thanks to the boss skip strategy, I only had to grind for two levels worth in the entire game... that was nice). I didn't have as much fun with it this time around as I did my first time, but I blame that partially on remembering a lot of what was where and how to obtain all of the spells and partially on the 3DS's controls. Trying to use the Circle Pad worked for the most part, but it's so sensitive, that I was changing directions whenever I ducked, and that didn't help in combat (so I usually had to use the D-Pad for battles where I needed shield precision, and we all know how that thing is). I did have a really bad problem with lava pits this time around too, more so than I remember on my first playthrough.

And I totally "cheated" on the last boss (read: used the cheap strategy to beat him). But I had Game Over'd on the Great Palace two or three times, and I was down to my last life by the time I got to the final boss, and I only had enough health left that any hit I took would kill me, so I decided to go cheap rather than do the whole dungeon once more.

@sirmastersephiroth

What I do is play through the temple and get all the big experience enemies. Then I fight the boss, defeat it and when you get to the area where you'd place the crystal jump over it, leave and go back in. All the enemies will respawn. Do it as many times as you feel necessary and then lay down the crystal for a quick level up.

@kriswright
I will knock myself out!!

Also, I totally forgot (or perhaps never knew) that you could kill the floating skulls.

@Anand It's a pain in the ass to kill them. Even when you're fully leveled up they still take like 20 hits.
09/08/11, 18:17
Yeah, at one point I started counting. I think my Attack Level was 3 or 4, and it took just over 40 hits to kill them.
09/08/11, 22:13
I counted too! It was 63 around sword level 2 or 3. 21 at 6. I just got two unfortunate Game Overs in a row, losing a lot of EXP. But I'm still doing pretty well--7/6/7 with a few temples to go. I can just get the remaining levels from putting in the crystals.

"Procreate" is such a pedestrian term. I prefer "copulate." It's less used, and it rolls off the tongue better, IMO.
09/08/11, 22:28
@kriswright ...no.

This is one of those games I always wanted to check out, but at this rate, I'd be surprised if I keep going. I like the core gameplay, but I just don't have the patience for starting at the beginning every time I run out of lives. Why on earth can't you start at a dungeon once you get to it!?
09/08/11, 23:26
@Zero - The final dungeon works like that. Once you get to the final dungeon, all game overs start you at its beginning. So there's that at least.

@V_s

I think starting you at that last dungeon is the very least they could do, though. The road to it is so treacherous, the level itself is so huge and so easy to get lost in and the bosses are so hard that if they'd started me back at the beginning the first time I Game Over'd, I think I would have sworn off the Zelda series forever.

Still, it's a testament to everything AoL does right that I still finished the game and still have a lot of affection for it. It's just one of those games that could've been exponentially better with only a few minor tweaks. In my opinion, anyway.

@Zero
Watching you battle with this game is making the Ambassador Program totally worth it. Your frustration is totally worth my eighty bucks.

Seriously though, keep at it! This thread is here to help keep you on task!
I only just got back to the game and am on Temple 2. Feeling the love, people. This game is just such a pleasure for me. YUMMY!

Game coitus.
