This is one game where I feel that both the Wii Remote and Wii U tablet controller would significantly benefit the gameplay (pointer controls, streamlined visor combat/interaction). You could also use the touch screen for mode/item selections and the map. I'd rather have this option than be forced to choose between the two.

What do you guys think? Yea? Nay? WTF?

I wouldn't say absolute shit. I find them quite playable, it depends more on how the developer handles them. Time Splitters on PS2 for example, has probably the worst DA controls ever. MGS4? Controlled great IMO.

Obviously pointer controls are best, but that still makes for iffy controls for everything else. Pressing the 1 and 2 button for any Wii game was shit. They were usually relegated to less useful functions, but it was still a pain in the ass.

No, they're absolute shit. To me, it's the equivalent of moving a mouse with my foot. The difference being that that control scheme has not been adopted by damn near every console fps in existence. I'm sure if I practiced long enough, I could become proficient at controlling a mouse with my foot, by that doesn't make it any less shit.

Dual analog is not an intuitive way to control a cursor, therefore it is shit if it is being used for such a control scheme.

While I love the Prime series, I'm kind of done with it (not counting a Hunters sequel for 3DS), and would want them to move on. First person Metroid was fine, but I want 3rd person, but if they were to make another Prime, I wouldn't want this kind of control scheme. I just don't think it would be very comfortable, and would probably be better suited for a more traditional first person shooter rather than the first person adventures the Primes are.

Can't know unless I ever tried it though, but again like I said, I'd rather see a 3rd person Metroid that takes advantage of the Tablet on its own.

Sounds cool man, I remember thinking with the Wiimote "You know, this is so close to being perfect all it needs is fewer buttons".

Going back to dual analog is what I hate most about Wii U... the IR aiming is the best thing about the Wii.

Did you think RE4 was shit til you played the Wii one? And RE4 wasn't DA but you still used an analog to control a cursor...

I love dual analog. I'm actually glad Wii U is going back to them.

I always thought the WiiMote worked great as a screen cursor (i.e. rail shooters like Dead Space: Extraction), but absolutely blew as a camera controller.

Nintendo has a lot to figure out. On games that use Ir well, aren't they sounding hypocritical if they don't use it? They touted this new way of playing for the past several years, and all of a sudden abandon it for a lot of games because of their latest "gimmick?" I put that in quotes because I don't want to give that word a bad connotation.

The best answer, just offer both control schemes. God forbid, Nintendo.

I voted no, but now change my mind to yes. Why not? It could only make the franchise less cumbersome.

@Anand

Ha. You did the math and realized there wouldn't be enough buttons for scanning.

Addressing the comfort issue again...this could be cool for a WiiWare game or something, but is it practical for a game I'm going to spend 10-20 hours playing?

It could be a cool mode, but if they continue with keeping an auto aim or auto lock type system, it's much less important IMO. Is it that important to introducethe accuracy of the Wiimote when you really don't have to aim all that precise? I liked the IR a lot in MP3, but it's not as important as in more of a twitch sort of shooter. I'm completely fine with a traditional control scheme on the tablet, with the tablet showing my map at all times.

People have said that it's surprisingly light. Zapper 2.0 sure doesn't look comfortable, though.

@kriswright
They could always use the... D-pad.

Actually, I wonder if scanning would even bother me if it was on the WiiU tab as an optional overlay. I wish the WiiU were somehow more accurate for direct pointing. Like, looking down the scope accurate. That would help with the WiiU overlay-type functions also.

I can't wait for Bart Vs. The Space Mutants WiiU, where you can identify the mutants with the tablet.

We got our break with Other M. I'm ready for a real 3D Metroid game now (read: another Prime).

I'm ready for a break from the 3D games, and to see a new 2D Metroid which we haven't seen since Zero Mission in early 2004. Other M was closer to the 2D Metroids, but still not the same.

Combining awesome pointer controls with the tablet controller sounds awesome, but that Zapper doesn't look comfortable. If they could make it more comfortable that the Wii Zapper, I'm all for it.
08/30/11, 19:44
Did you guys use your Zappers much, anyway? I never got Crossbow Training, but I've tried it at a friend's with one of the RE rail shooters, and I couldn't see the point. It's just more wasted plastic.

I guess it has a bit more reason to exist if there's gonna be a tablet sitting on it. At least that allows for something you can't do normally, and more easily, without the thing.

@Guillaume

I can sum up my opinion of the Wii Zapper with one photo:

@Guillaume That's the only reason I support the idea. I hated the Wii Zapper, it's a stupid pointless piece of plastic. I'm not so much supporting the idea of using the Wii U Zapper, I'm supporting the idea of using two unique control inputs to make the game play differently. The U Zapper just happens to be part of it.

@kriswright

Haha, what the hell!

@carlosrox

Yes, I hated RE4 controls on the Gamecube, and to be honest, even though I occasionally played Gamecube games during its generation, I gamed almost exclusively on the PC last gen. The Wii was such a breath of fresh air because I was ready to give up on console gaming.

@PogueSquadron

Imagine that you're holding a shotgun. Problem solved. In fact, a shotgun in real life is even more uncomfortable than the Zapper, yet people have been using it to do hunting for ages.

@Anand

Actually, the Wii U Zapper makes it perfectly possible to aim down the sights of the tablet screen, since the IR would be the points of reference.

EDIT:

Also, you can use the touch screen to change visors. It'd be more immersive anyway.
