Xenoblade Chronicles (Nintendo Wii) Review ()  by
So there's lots of Xenoblade threads running around. Time for an official thread for impressions game discussion etc.

Whether you're a lucky resident of Europe or Australia, a North American who's decided to flip the bird to Nintendo and import, or even someone who simply wants to live vicariously through the experiences of others, this is the place you want to be!

EDIT: Roykoopa's Top 10 favourite Xenoblade music tracks!

So I received this wonderful gem on Saturday. There was no way in hell I was going to import through retailers (it was either pay more, or wait more), so I had one of my buddies from the UK pick up a copy and mail it to me. It pays to have friends in different areas of the world.

Anyway, I think I really am turning into a casual gamer because this game is kind of intimidating. It's not so much the world in and of itself, but the combination of the scope of the world + all the side quests and shit is just too overwhelming, and it makes me not want to play it. I know I can ignore them, but I'm a bit OCD, and there's the affinity system, which I want to use to its fullest potential. Also, the battle system is very deep (even before the hour mark, you're introduced to things like aggro and break/topple/daze), and I'm lovin' the concept of ether gems, which is basically like materia from FF7.

One thing that has been a big help in this game is the streamlining of pretty much everything. Save wherever you want, follow the arrow for the next story point, follow the icon for story quests, gain experience by exploring, story notes, tutorials at your finger tips, etc. Everything is done as painlessly as possible, but even so, the game is just so massive that it can be off-putting. To contrast, I also nabbed Bit.Trip Complete over this week-end (SAGA was nowhere to be found) and I didn't even want to put it down. Like I said, I think I really am becoming a casual player.

See, i dont need to read stuff like this dammit :p

Would love t get this game but dont know how to go about it or modding my Wii

I find it very easy to play Xenoblade casually. Play for half an hour, save, stop.

I can understand it being intimidating at the beginning, but you have to let that OCD go! I basically don't go out of my way to do side-quests. For the most part, they just solve themselves as I play!

Ok, glad I had it in mind to ignore the shit out of sidequests this time.

@Renjaku

You're unlikely to miss out on much. As far as I can tell you only ever get money, sometimes XP, and most of the time "decent" items or weapons. I don't think there is a risk of missing out on the ultimate weapon in the game. Well, perhaps at the very end, but so far the items end up only mildly useful or the gear only marginally better than what you have, if at all.

Still, you'll often be completing quests without trying. Whenever a villager gives you a question (kill this enemy, collect X number of this loot), most of the time you don't need to go back to them to get a reward. Right on the spot, you'll get a "quest completed" message and earn the reward right then and there.

Oh, I'm sure I can play it casually, and all of the streamlining has allowed it to be conducive to that style of play, but it doesn't change the feel of the game, and I just feel too much of a sense of obligation, and that is hard to deal with in a game like this. I start it up, and think, yeah, I really don't feel like playing something this big. It's not a knock on the game, it's just an observation that my tastes as a gamer have shifted. I still like games like that, but I have to really be in a hardcore mood to play them.

When I popped in Bit.Trip Complete, I immediately felt at home, and could potentially play a longer session of that game than Xenoblade.

I have had a pretty addicting week with Dark Souls coming out. I was attempting to take a break from gaming today to do some class work; however, I checked my mail box and Xenoblade Chronicles made its three week journey to my house..... I put the game in my wii, figured out the hack i had and started playing just to preview the game.

Jeeeeeeeessssshhh. between dark souls being the most brilliant game i played in a long time and this game showing up, not to mention battlefield, skyrim and zelda coming out while i will still be sucked into dark souls. NOT TO EFFING MENTION the two mario 3ds titles (mario karts the only one im getting at launch)... asdkghasklmvnsvhjks i am overwhelmed with games for the first time in forever. Some of my most favorite games this generation are coming out AT THE SAME DAMN TIME!!!!

Looks like i am going to be very busy the next 5 months with just these games alone. Thank god i am not interested in any game thats on the palette for next year.

Okay this game is fucking amazing. I love how the story is integrated into the gameplay. Being able to see your future deaths and avoid them in-game is one of the most amazing things I've experienced in an RPG. Seeing items that are related to future sidequests is awesome too.

Oh, and gem crafting is surprisingly addictive! I have to pull myself away from it because I obsess way too much over getting juuuust the right combinations for crafting the gems. I also spend a ridiculous amount of time equipping my characters, making sure they have adequate gems installed into their equipment, leveling up their arts, managing their skill trees, yadda yadda yadda.

Also, RIP, Fiona.

My copy just came in! Will try it out later today.

Got a chance to play it a bunch last night and I'm liking it a lot so far. There's a few things that still confuse me a bit, mainly the whole skill tree thing. I understand that skills are learned from top to bottom on the skill tree but it I'm still unsure as to how these skills actually work. I'm sure I'll find out more as I actually start learning them though

One issue I do have is with the battle system. There's just too much going on! I have such a hard time figuring it out from so much action from the auto attacks and numbers popping up that it seems almost pointless to try and use these abilities that Shulk has to lower defense. I have to attack from the side, okay, but I can hardly make out the enemy in the heat of battle unless if it's large enough for me to see. It's not causing too many problems yet as the game isn't too hard.

@VofEscaflowne

The skills are passive, for the most part. Bonuses you don't have to worry too much about for now. Soon things will get a bit more complex, but for now just switch the tree you're pouring points into once you've acquired a skill. You will gain more skills more quickly that way.

The combat really isn't that complicated (yet)! The auto attacks are automatic, so don't worry about that. As for telling where the enemy is facing, you got that big red cercle showing you which person in your party the enemy is attacking. Use that. It's the way he's facing.

I had the same reaction...my god...the scale is unbelievable!

It's pretty much the part that makes everyone go "oh shit". (We're talking about the giant's knee right?)

@Guillaume

Yep.

EDIT:

Ok, it's a total mindfuck with you using the same avatar as me. I'm like, "wait, I didn't say that!" Make it stop!

Mine STILL HASN'T COME HERE.

@ploot

Holy shite. How long ago did you order?

Have you contacted them to ask WTF is going on?
10/14/11, 01:02
I ordered it maybe a week or two after it released in Europe. It was sold out for a while, and it finally shipped on the 16th of September. They say to wait 20 working days to contact them about missing shipments. Sure, there was Canadian Thanksgiving on Monday, but I'm going to contact them tomorrow (AKA, the 20th working day... Really the 19th but close enough).

Not a big fan of Zavvi at the moment.
