Basically you lure some high level monster near a cliff and then have melia use hypnosis on the monster and shove it off said cliff with one of her arts.

I'll have to give it a shot sometimes.

"So we're going to make a little area called the antol den and make it a real pain in the ass to get to, then have a quest where you have to kill two monsters in said area,"

I'd say yes and no. The game rewards you for exploring and doing sidequests in such a way that you're better off doing that instead of the old school grinding by simply slaying monsters. I never had to grind at all during my 250 or so hours of gameplay, which was probably due to my addiction to sidequests. The times when I got my ass kicked by bosses I just adjusted my party members, their equipment and arts and I was good to go.

Holy shit. 250 hours!?

I'm currently about 30 hours in, and I'm also addicted to the sidequests, but I don't think I will be able to stay interested for 250 hours!

Currently in the swamp, only recently started rebuilding Colony 6.

The game does a damn fine job of introducing new areas and events along with more interesting sidequests all the way through the game, so I never had a problem maintaining interest. The biggest problem I had was probably staying the hell away. I'm not done yet either; I'm saving a few things to serve as warm-up for X, and to make it feel like the game hasn't truly ended. Yes, I'm that sad of a person.

As you keep doing sidequests, increasing the affinity between your party and the various regions, the inhabitants there will be more inclined to give you meatier sidequests with their own little plots and subquests, so it's as if the game rewards you for spending time with it. But yeah, if you don't want to spend months on end playing the game like I did, you can get away with far less, so don't feel pressured by the insane amounts of stuff you can do.

I looooooove the Satorl region by the way! One of the most atmospheric places I've ever explored in any game. The way the whole place transforms in the night time, and the contrast between the different times of day just blows my mind.

Oh yeah, I reached the Satorl Marsh in the daytime, groaning "Really, a frickin' swamp? RPGs really bring you to the most wondrous places…" and then nighttime fell and I went "Oh".

And I've been experiencing the whole "get meatier side quests as you finish more of them" in Colony 9. I've had 4 stars for that region for a while, and it's been pretty cool to see actual side stories evolve between various characters.

The only thing that worries me are the side quests that can pass you by if you venture too far into the story. Sure, I can try and finish the ones I get as soon as I get them, but I'm never sure if I've simply failed to speak to a certain character in time, and never even SAW that they had a quest to give me. I think the game could have used more transparency in that regard.

Just don't burn yourself out attacking the sidequests. There are A LOT A LOT A LOT A LOT.
That might cause you to stop altogether and that would be a shame.

In one play-through you can't realistically do everything the game offers.

@Guillaume
There will be more of that type of sidequest development as things go on, and soon they'll bleed into other regions' respective quests at times. Really makes the world come alive, I think.

Don't worry too much about the timed sidequests that pop up, though. I'd say it's very unlikely that the game would launch a set of timed quests that would only be available for such a short time that you'd risk missing out on them. I guess it depends on how you play, but the quests tend to be around for a while. Besides, most of the time you'll be able to figure out that they're gonna go away, or that there is potential for them to be lost when you do some big story related thing in the area.

Also, even if you wanted to do every single sidequest in the friggin' game (more than 400, I think. Or maybe that's maximum number you can do in one playthrough. Well, it's a lot in any case.), you wouldn't be able to do that in one playthrough anyway, like @ploot says. Some quests risk disappearing not because you neglect them, but because your actions elsewhere affects the conditions for the people involved in some way, so just accept that some quests will have to go unattended to no matter what you do.

I think most of the timed sidequests only expire after a pretty obvious "point of no return"... but don't quote me on that. Can anyone confirm?
07/02/14, 17:48
@Secret_Tunnel
Yeah, that's how it works. I don't think the game explicitly tells you "hey, this is a point of no return" more than at one point in the game, but there is enough warning bells ringing to keep you from accidentally the whole thing.

Now, what I don't quite remember is if the optional quests are considered timed or not. Like, when you find yourself being able to do task X for person A, or do task Y for person B, but doing one will cancel out the other. I don't think the game labels them as timed, but I'm not 100% on that, and can't boot up the game just now.

@r_hjort

You're thinking of fixing the light in Colony 9 or choosing who to give that "love potion" to? No, these don't show up as timed quests. Rather, in the quest description, they're explaining the choice you need to make.
07/02/14, 18:01
@Guillaume
Yes, that's the kind of quest I was thinking of! I suspected there was flavor text explanations there, but it's been a while since I looked up the old quest list. Thanks for clearing that up!

Speaking of quests and missing out on them, there is one quest that I know I missed by accident. This one person I talked to seemed really troubled about a certain matter, and I could either have acknowledged the problem or dismissed it entirely, but I misread the latter option as being more of a comforting one and effectively made them not want to confide in me with their quests in the future. It wasn't until I had saved my file that I realized what he actually had said, but by then it was too late. It's my biggest Xenoblade regret.
07/02/14, 18:17
There's a fairly specific area of the game where all of the quests are timed which makes me feel great about the future well being of those people.

@Guillaume

you had better start the rebuilding colony 6 sidequest because that is the most rewarding sidequest in the game.

@pokepal148

Better start what? That area you're mentioning? I guess I will, when I get to it.
07/03/14, 21:39
@Guillaume You already should be About at that point.

the spoiler tags are acting up on me. Had to turn them off.

@pokepal148

Oh okay, pre-edit the post was kinda hard to follow! Yeah, I've started rebuilding. Levels are at something like 1-1-0-1.

@Guillaume

Love that area so much at night. The music, the visuals, the atmosphere, the creatures. Man, I hope X has a place as beautiful as that.

250 hours is kind of crazy, I did it in less than 150 with practically all the side quests completes, but I'll tell you I would have been happy to play another 100 hours if the content was there.
07/03/14, 22:12
@Guillaume once you get to the point where you can invite people in that place becomes awesome.

Outside of camera control I feel like the Nunchuck+Wiimote is the best control option. You can move and select your arts at the same time. It doesn't help that the original classic controller is definitely not made for this type of game. But I may stick with it just so I can view the world easier.
