Yea me too, that was kind of disappointing but not really much they could do except scale the fight and then that wouldn't be good for people who sucked at the combat.

Doing sidequests is about 100x more fun than grinding though, so I never really felt like I wasting my time, as I usually do in JRPGs. If they just streamlined the sidequests a little bit (marking sidequest goals and NPCs on the map, making it clear who has sidequests to accept), the game would be close to perfect. Fingers crossed for X.

@Jargon

Agreed, the sidequests were close to be amazing, but I felt that they weren't quite there. By the time I got to those final fights, I didn't have any sidequests to do that were in my level range because I hadn't done certain ones back when I was lower-levelled. I loved exploring the game world though. Honestly, I say eliminate quest-givers entirely and just have the sidequests be unlocked when you encounter them. Eliminate the running back-and-forth. Nothing worse than killing ten monsters and then getting a sidequest telling you to go kill those same ten monsters!

@Secret_Tunnel

Maybe have it so that when you kill one of those monsters, a 1/10 or whatever pops up but with a question mark for the quest name. Then you know that there is a quest that involves this and you still get credit for what you've already done, but you don't have to lose quest givers which I kind of like.

The main thing X needs to do in my opinion is streamline everything. Improved text speed, beastiary, more landmarks, not having areas locked off after certain points. Probably more things.

@Pokefreak911

Sounds good to me. It's why I like Pokemon X so much right now. Seems like they really streamlined the experience a bit. Xenoblade needs that in X and it'll instantly be a better game than the already amazing Xenoblade.

@DrFinkelstein

Not if the game is weaker in other aspects while improving in those we're discussing. Not going to be easy to match Xenoblade in terms of art, music, story, etc. I am optimistic though.

@Jargon

It hasn't occurred to me that they would be silly enough to degrade other things. I'm pretty sure Art, Music, Story will be their primary focus. I don't feel like anything is mutually exclusive with Monolith Soft. They're a great company.

@DrFinkelstein

Certainly it wouldn't be intentional, I just think that Xenoblade is so good that expecting X to be even better could be setting ourselves up for disappointment. It's going to be hard to match. If they do, it'll be amazing but even if they fall short in some ways, while hopefully addressing some of our concerns, it can still be a great game.

My only worry about X is there was some kind of online multiplayer talk behind it, right? If done right they could still make it a killer single player game and then you can also quest a bit with friends and stuff and that would be sweet. But it still worries me a bit, anytime a developer takes a previously single player only game and starts talking about multiplayer I can't help but feel like the single player will suffer a bit from it...

@Zero
You and me both. If they have reduced anything Xenoblade had -- anything -- to fit multiplayer in there, I will cry blood. But I've whined enough about that in this thread before.

@Jargon

A fair point, and a realist viewpoint. Reminds me to keep myself in check on this.

I think whether or not something is grinding depends on the context. I see grinding as doing something over and over to reach a certain goal, something the player doesn't necessarily want to do or wouldn't do if it weren't necessary to complete said goal. So in Xenoblade's case, if someone is just trying to complete the game and/or play through the story and doesn't care much about the side stuff, then having to go beat side quests and/or fight enemies to level up/get better equipment is grinding. If people like the side stuff and/or want to do it, then it isn't grinding.

My guess is that the jump in boss difficulty towards the end was done to encourage people to go and tackle some of the side stuff. With so much to do in a game like this, it's hard to pace the main story, but I think that last bit could have been designed better. It also doesn't help that the area with the final boss is a point of no return, and if someone saves there and finds out that the boss is too tough at their current level/setup, then they have no choice but to whack the enemies there until they are sufficiently leveled.

@Zero Considering that Xenoblade is essentially an offline MMORPG in a lot of ways, I think it'll transition to online play just fine, if that is indeed the direction of the next game.

If I remember correctly, that stupid dragon with spike damage was right before the final point of no return. I think that was the toughest standard fight in the game, and if you make it though that fight you can beat the final boss

@mrbiggsly
I obliterated that guy but struggled on the last boss.

I like how the AI seems to be utterly incapable of realizing that stepping in lava is a bad idea and that staying in said lava is an even worse idea. Nice job guys.

@pokepal148

Boss fight towards the end? That one was a pain.
05/19/14, 18:14
@Secret_Tunnel not even, I'm on my merry way through an icy mountain range where apparently there's a cave with lava for some reason and i'm trying to kill the ugly thing guarding the magma stone.

'Sharla what the hell are you doing in the lava, get out of there'

*uses 'come to me' party command*

'Sharla, why are you..? Go AROUND that rock Don't try to walk through in you aren't a ghost.'

*Sharla fainted*

'Oh for fuck sake,'

Yeah...that gets slightly worse a little later on.

So naturally upon learning my girlfriend is being turned into a robot I take it upon myself to find some kids in a cave and to gather some food ingredients for a chef who's cuisine is apparently literally to die for,

Wait, what's this about a cliff trick... oh, heh heh
