Game is still pretty SWEET. I'm about 16 hours in now and pretty taken aback by the sheer size and scope of the areas.

Is it just me, though, or is it pretty easy? Not the monsters that are clearly higher than your level of course (like the level 70 stuff roaming the plains), but regular fights and boss fights? I feel like when I do side quests, I'm making the game less enjoyable because most battles are a breeze. Anyone else feel the same way?

Getting this game today for $36 used at Gamestop. It's on hold, I just need to drive over and pick it up.

Sweet!

@Zero I hope it includes case and manual! And if you're lucky, Club Nintendo registration!

I was wrong. I got it for $32. LAUGHS MANIACALLY AT EVERYONE WHO SAID I'D NEVER FIND IT FOR LESS THAN $50. BWA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Yeah it has case and manual, and the disk looks spotless. Not sure about Club Nintendo but considering how fast the prices of the "free" games went up, I estimate that code to be about $1-$2 tops anyway.

@Zero

Used has different rules than new buddy.

Yeah, but basically people were like "why aren't you preordering you will never find it cheaper it will end up rare and yada yada". Which happens with some games, but I'm not sure if this game is actually rare.

Anyway, I'm a few hours into the game. Just finished the part where the girl dies and you fight the huge mechon with a face. Awesome game so far. I haven't been this excited about a game in awhile. Looking forward to getting lost in the huge world of Xenoblade.

@Zero

Glad you're loving it. I'm gonna have to get back into it ASAP.

I was just telling my husband this weekend that I may start playing Xenoblade again. I got as done in Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny as I generally do in those games (not married, but finished the final boss), so I need to find a way to waste time but save money until November. Maybe I'll start up some new game plus action.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but one thing I love about this game is that in any given area you can run into creatures at all kinds of levels, and it's up to you to decide whether to take them on. It feels more realistic than every area having a bunch of similarly leveled enemies. They also seem to go about their own business and such for the most part, and various creature types have different mechanics for whether they try to engage you in a battle or not. It gives the areas a more fluid feel.

I even saw some huge level 82 dude who would probably kill me in one hit. Not going near him.

@Zero I do like that. It makes the world feel more real to know there are "scarey" things out there. My favorite thing abou the game is how I felt like I was in an adventure and I felt like I really travelled up, down, and all around the bionis.

Holy cow, the title screen... the sword just sitting there and it's awesome and relaxing and the slow time changes... starts off a normal day sky, turns to evening sky, then night, then dawn...

SO AWESOME.

Neat! I'll have to try that.

My absolute favorite thing about Xenoblade is the world itself. It's ridiculously expansive and a lot of fun to explore. There've been countless times where I'd just stand on a plateau or a bridge or whatever and just kind of marvel at the huge expanse of land before me and remember that I can travel anywhere that I see. Who says big worlds have to be empty? We've come a long way since Hyrule Field.

I just reached the Machina village (I'm level 54), really enjoying the character development and story is coming together now that I've begun to explore Mechonis.
09/06/12, 16:41
I kind of get scared to explore, which is silly, because why not explore? It's such a huge world though!

One thing I keep doing and probably shouldn't is try to take on beasts that are just a bit too high of a level for me to take on at that moment, and instead of coming back for them later, I just keep fighting and dying over and over and over...

The side quests with the clock, they are time sensitive I imagine? But is this actual in-game time or just like "if you progress the main story too far these side quests disappear"?

@Zero

Yeah, notice the border color of the enemy you are trying to face; it's a quick indicator whether the difference in enemy level and your level is too much:

Black: Very Easy Enemies. These enemies are 6 or more levels lower than your party. Little EXP, AP, and SP rewarded.
Blue: Easy Enemies. These enemies are 3-5 levels below your party.
White: Normal Enemies. These enemies are within 2 levels of your party.
Yellow: Hard Enemies. Be sure to plan ahead as these monsters are 3-5 levels higher than your party.
Red: Very Hard Enemies, who are 6 or more levels higher than your party.

It's a matter of the quest disappearing if you progress the main story too far.

It's also worth noting that a level difference affects hit percentage. If the enemy is yellow or, especially, red, your members will have a difficult time landing attacks. On the flip side, you'll have an easy time hitting enemies who are blue or black, and they will have a difficult time hitting you. This makes higher-level enemies extremely difficult to take down, especially red ones.

As for the clock by quests, don't worry too much about those. They don't disappear until a long time later, and in most cases you'll be able to figure out when that point will happen and you should go and finish them all.

So... what are materials and collectables? Should I be saving these for something in the future, or can I sell them off? I know some quests have you collecting them but do they have any point otherwise? Like can I build stuff with them at some point or what?
09/09/12, 04:55
@Zero You should fill your Collectopedia with the collectables, that'll reward you with equips and gems. Other than that, all the materials and collectables are just for quests or for selling. Unless you're out of space, I would recommend keeping all of your materials and collectables, because you really never know when you'll need them. And it's a real pain to try to find some of them again, especially the rare ones. If you do need to sell/drop them to make space, then start with the ones you have the most amount of, as these are likely to be the common ones that are easy to obtain again should you need them.

I was playing this for a bit this morning, it makes me so made when I do a collection quest and I run around a zone for an hour and can't find that one item.
09/10/12, 01:35
I haven't really been doing the collection quests unless they are right in front of my face. The kill a random powerful enemy quests are fun though, albeit I'm usually underleveled when I try them and spend like a half hour or so trying and dying before I admit it's not going to happen yet. Are these the only kind of side quests? I was hoping for a bit more variety than "collect a bunch of stuff" or "kill a powerful enemy" in the side quests.

Now, the main game... man. Just finished (at like 5 in the morning) the part about 10 hours in where I went deep into the mine and fought the big metal dude who can talk... and then the other face guy shows up and yada yada. I just really like pretty much everything about this game from the story to the scope of the world to the gameplay, other than the aforementioned side quest variety and maybe the fact that buying/equipping feels kind of "old school" tedious (no auto-equip, etc.) for such an otherwise very modern game.

If Xenoblade keeps up like this it might end up one of my favorite RPGs ever. It's already near the top of my favorite 3D RPGs ever list (although whether it can take out Skies of Arcadia and Persona 4... I dunno...)
