I'm around level 23 I think, this game delivers big time. So much depth to the battle system - specifically, I love the arts system, it's amazing. I'm not going out of my way for side quests, I hope that doesn't burn me in the end.

I just want to know if I can safely sell a bunch of the items I collected along the way, it would help pay for those intermediate art books. I guess the only stuff I shouldn't sell is the stuff that you have a vision about when you collect it?

@anon_mastermind I've had some items where I did not have a vision about it, but I did end up needing them for a quest, I think. There really isn't a big problem to sell them, so long as you know that if you want to do all the quests, you may need to spend some time running around picking them up again.

@anon_mastermind There are a lot of quest items where you won't get the white exclamation mark. My rule of thumb is to sell stuff that is common and would be easy to obtain should I find out later that I need it. In the case of your collectables, the items that you have the most number of are likely the common ones, so sell some of those. For materials, there are a lot of materials that are used in quests, and your limit on materials is fairly low, so figuring these out can be a pain. Very few of the small bag items are used in quests, so start with those. For the large bag items, if you have a high number of any then they're probably common enough, so go with those.

Every item that is needed for a non-timed quest will always be available though, so if you don't mind recollecting stuff when you go back to do quests, you can always get the items you need once more.

Thanks folks. I will be selling some loot tonight, and upgrading my party's abilities.

Anyone regularly play as someone other than Shulk?
05/14/12, 23:33
Not regularly, but I've tried everyone at least once except for one of them. I use some of the other characters for side stuff when I know I won't need the Monado, but for the main story, I used Shulk. His AI doesn't make the most effective use of the Monado arts, and if I see a vision, I'd have to use an affinity block to get him to use the proper art to defend. It really makes me wish this game had online, it'd be fun to work with other players in this game's battles.

@anon_mastermind

The moment I got Melia, I switched to using her as my main, and never went back to using Shulk for the remainder of the game.

He was still always in my party though, along with Riki

The Xenoblade Wiki site is tremendously helpful when it comes to finding items I need to rebuild Colony 6, or complete quests in general. It makes the process a lot smoother, and I don't feel like a doofus walking around for hours trying to figure out which monster a particular item would come from.

The game has been pretty fantastic so far.The sense of scale is amazing in some areas.

Seems like there's plenty to keep you interested outside of the main quest.Shame that nearly all side quests are simply fetching something or killing a specific enemy.

The battle system is ok,id much prefer a bit more control over both the camera in battle and the characters themselves.The A.I isn't especially good.
Voice acting in this game is a bit hit or miss,but nothing too bad.

@TheOldManFromZelda

I REALLY should play this game again. Soon. Perhaps tonight! GET THE TURKEY. ADVANCE THE STORY.

Spent a few years doing sidequests. Are you guys bothering with character affinity? It seems the only reason to care about it is for the heart-to-hearts.

I just got this yesterday as a present! So far, it has a lot of promise, but I do feel slightly overwhelmed by everything. At one hour in, I've just been wandering around the first town (colony 9 I think) at night, talking to people and buying a few things. A couple questions...

-Day/night--what does this affect?

-I have some crystal I got from a monster, but it's different from the gems I can equip on my stuff. Should I hang onto it? Is there anything I can do with it yet?

-Should I sell stuff like the Stiff Hairs I get from monsters, or hang onto them for later purposes? So far, I've been keeping at least one of everything I find.

-I notice that I can put some stuff in the Collectopedia as a record, but I lose the item. Is this recommended? Should I hang onto the items? Can I go ahead and sell stuff that I already have in the 'pedia, or should I hang onto those as well?

I'm very intrigued by what I've played so far, but I gotta say, the text size is killing my eyes. It's really small and I'm currently on a smaller than usual TV due to current living situations. After I move into the new house next month I'll be upgrading, but I'd hate to be having problems with Xenoblade until then. And I'd also hate to wait a month to play it again.

@TriforceBun

- There is place in Colony 9 where you can refine crystal to make gems. Just north of the commercial area.

- Most of it is useless. Though you can trade it amongst the characters to level up their affinity.

- You can get good gems and items for completing the collectopedia, both the specific categories (veg, fruit, animal, etc) and the whole area.

@Secret_Tunnel Affinity also increases characters' gem crafting abilities. Also, it increases the number of skill links that two characters have with one another.

@TriforceBun 1. Different townspeople are out and about at different times of day. Different monsters also appear depending on whether it is day or night.

2. Crystals are used to craft gems, but you won't be able to craft them until a bit later.

3. Many monster materials and collectible items are used in subquests, so it is best to keep everything unless you really need money. Money is easy to get but some items have a really low drop rate and can take an hour or two to get another one. Some of the Collectopedia rewards are pretty good, so filling it up is okay. However, if you have a subquest going that needs the items, it's better to complete the subquest before putting one of the items into the Collectopedia.

Anyone notice that the Wii reads the disc briefly every time you jump?
05/25/12, 22:42
@anon_mastermind That's because the game is loading the voice sample your character speaks when he/she jumps.

Fiora's is pretty hilarious. It's very unladylike, there's like this scratchy grunt: "EUUEAGH!" I love it.
05/26/12, 01:57
@TriforceBun I know, I laughed when I first heard it. I didn't realise that hopping was so strenuous...
05/26/12, 02:08
@TriforceBun

If you read into her backstory, you'll find out that Fiora is the chosen one to take responsibility of all of the women on Bionis by relieving them of their screaming duties during birth. She is forever cursed to making these ridiculous noises while jumping

@TriforceBun

I know! Why so small!?

I really wish I could swim faster in this game...
