Xenoblade Chronicles (Nintendo Wii) Review ()  by
So there's lots of Xenoblade threads running around. Time for an official thread for impressions game discussion etc.

Whether you're a lucky resident of Europe or Australia, a North American who's decided to flip the bird to Nintendo and import, or even someone who simply wants to live vicariously through the experiences of others, this is the place you want to be!

EDIT: Roykoopa's Top 10 favourite Xenoblade music tracks!

At about 50 hours in now. I have gone back and explored a few areas in full and killed some of the harder monsters I couldn't kiil before. Very few games grab me enough for me to want 100%, this is one of those games.

I finally finished the game before 2012 began - I can start on Skyward Sword now. My thoughts:

Wonderful game overall, and one hell of an achievement for Monolithsoft. I would not have believed such a world was possible to create on the Wii.
The story got a little cheesy toward the end, but it had so many clever science fiction elements that it didn't bug me too much. It's probably the most epic game I've ever played, and that's despite the fact that I did very few side quests. Their Wii U game is one of my anticipated games ever, and in Monolithsoft Nintendo have a dev that can stand toe to toe with the best RPG devs in the West. I cannot begin to fathom what these guys will do with the Wii U.

Just beat the game, what the hell did I just watch at the end? That was an amazing way to end the game and I feel as if is quickly became my favorite wii game.... Wow, such an amazing game...

And I watched the credits roll on the game last night at around 2:30am I BEAT IT! After all the trouble of a broken Wii, sending it on for repairs but not getting it fixed... the game is complete!

Talk about one heck of an adventure though. I really feel as if I've been through so much after beating it haha. The game really surprises you at every turn once the story picks up though. You never know what to expect or what to see as one area after the next just feels more expansive and full of secrets as the last. Now I'll have to go back and do all of those high level monster areas once I've leveled up a bit more. It's quite exciting knowing that there's still hidden things out there to find.

@VofEscaflowne without spoiling it for anyone, how crazy did you find the ending to be, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest?
02/27/12, 04:55
@Scrawnton

I'll black this out (don't think I could really give it a rating) but I'm not sure if I'd really find the ending itself crazy. I think that was set a bit earlier on where Zanza rose out of Shulk's body and the cutscene with him fighting and destroying Meyneth. Though it was a bit weird with the scene in the space station where he basically destroyed the universe but it could have been worse on the crazy scale haha.

I still need to go back and do all the extra bits.

@Cube191

I'm working on that right now and playing a different character. I've played as Shulk for the entire game up until the end so changing now is quite strange haha. But I like it! It makes the battles feel so different and I have to change my tactics around a bit. I might switch up another of my characters as well so that aggro can be drawn away better and I can focus more on increasing my damage via better gems without relying on stealth so much. I think I'm at level 84 right now and taking down level 90+ monsters so thankfully the experience is quite good too

@VofEscaflowne

That's a really good idea actually. I did mess around with other characters a little but I might just do a new play-through with someone else

Who do you like?
02/27/12, 22:41
@Cube191

I'm playing as Melia and she is a monster! Once you level up her spells enough, they'll recharge at a good rate, provide great party support and she'll be able to attack high level monsters a lot easier. It also helps to stack poison/blaze/freeze damage that continuously drains away at a monster's life or even an entire group. I wouldn't bother letting the AI control her as she's really useless then I think.

@VofEscaflowne
Yes, the key with Melia is to control her yourself. Her AI is awful, and it makes her useless otherwise. Add her topple attack into the mix (which needs to be done straight after one of her other attacks), and she becomes one of the most powerful characters in the game.

@achhibbar

Yeah I saw that you can use Spear Break followed by the topple one. I didn't have much AP to use since I leveled a lot of her spells but I'll make sure to spend more points in them once I level up some more.

N.P's review in my hands: 9.0

Quite the detailed review.. I'm so pumped. In short: They loved the music and the refreshing gameplay this game offers. They weren't all that crazy about some of the voice acting (english) during the game and how the side-quest system worked (500 side quests but a lot are like "kill three of this monster etc" and the descriptions of the quests are very vague so you could complete a sidequest without even knowing it - a bit on the unsatisfying end).

80-100 hrs of gameplay, great graphics and sound, and the scale of the game is simply breathtaking.

wooooooooo

Pretty much agree on the sidequest part of the game. There's a ton yes and they will keep you occupied for many, many hours. But in the end, they're just not satisfying at all and very few of them involve anything challenging other than the... well, challenge quests. Too many of them will have you running around endlessly, sometimes between areas (thank you for quick travel) but what's more annoying is that when the quests need you to find a specific villager. While you can find them in a character log of sorts and which hour they'll be out, it does not tell you at all where to find them. This is a huge issue considering the vastness of the villages you'll be exploring to the point where it feels that a lot of time is wasted running around aimlessly.

Other than that though, the game is simply terrific and yes, the scale of the game is breathtaking. Quite impressive for a Wii game when it leaves you with your mouth open starring at its various locales

enjoying this game immensely.... bought it on Saturday morning. Kinda overwelmed by all the sidequests... too many for me. I'm doing about half of them as I'm progressing through the story... over 6hrs in and I can't believe One Character's life...was cut short. At least it appears to be...

I'm enjoying the music/draw distance and overall atmosphere of the game.

@Smerd

Alright. Because you experienced it, too, I can rest a little easy. Aeris all over again.

Thought I really F'd up.
I'm out of this thread now, haha. Spoilers! Only came in because I saw you posted, dude.

I guess there is the possibility we both messed up pretty bad?

EDIT- And yeah, the Draw Distance is awesome. Gotta love all that Wii criticism and how it can't do it.

@Smerd

Yeah, that kind of caught me off guard.

Though I'm hoping she somehow comes back later on...somehow. I mean the reverse box art has her freaking standing there with all of the main characters. I intentionally pulled that out when that scene was unfolding, telling myself there was no way they'd actually kill her off ;p

There are just so many things to choose from in selling - items you get - weapons - gems etc etc...

Do you think it's best to trade with people rather then sell your goods? Better to sell or trade weapons/gear or sell/trade treasures/misc items?

I want to keep my 'rocks' because I know I will be able to make them into gems soon. I think that will be unlocked in the very near future for me, if it hasn't been unlocked already.

Well written impressions from Parish, as usual. He (and the game's director) make a good point about the false JRPG and WRPG dichotomy. When I think about it, it blows the mind that people think a Bioware title and a Bethesda title are necessarily closer to each other than to any RPG from Japan, and that Japanese RPGs are similarly all the same.

If anything, Bioware games share more in common with Persona 4 than Elder Scrolls, and Xenoblade is closer to Skyrim than to any Final Fantasy or Tales game.

Oh. And I ended up getting the NA version after all, for a variety of reasons.
