Nostalgia Goggles (I WANT TO SLAP THEM OFF OF PEOPLE) [roundtable]

So I was in Anatomy/Physiology lab today, and one guy in my group noticed what was on my shirt:

He asked, "Hey, is that a metroid?"

I said, "Yeah"

He said, "Cool, Super Metroid is one of my favorite games."

"Mine too! :D " I said.

At this time, I'm thinking, 'Holy crap, a Nintenbro at my college! I should introduce him to Neg-'

"Way better than those new first person shooter Prime ones."

...

SO THAT GOT ME THINKING...

Do nostalgia goggles cause a lot of bias towards newer games in a series?

FOR EXAMPLE:

DISCUSS!!!

Note: I love both Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. I actually enjoy the 2-D Metroids more and think Super Metroid is better, but not 'way better' as the guy smugly said.

You know I just noticed something about that dog in the foreground. It has no lower jaw.

One of the worst cases of nostalgia really blinding people is when people say that no generation of Pokémon matters except the first, and all others don't count; it was only cool when there was still only 151. Now I can understand liking the first gen the most, I mean there are indeed some great creatures there, and who could argue that it's the best, but to say that no other gen matters, really? I mean Hell even if you stopped playing the games, how could you not at least go into Gen II? Pokémon was huge when it first came out, and to not go onto the sequels where there were more monsters, new areas, more gyms, and you even get to go back to see the places from R/B/Y is just mind boggling. How could anyone who was a fan of Pokémon when it first came out, not even care about the second generation? There have been some great new Pokémon since the first gen.

Damn nostalgia.

No nostalgia for Pokémon here. I never played any of it. When Pokémon was first introduced (1996 according to Wikipedia) I was already 30 years old and had zero interest in it. Nothing against it though.

Still everyone knows the first generation is the only one that matters
Man the smileys on here suck

I lost interest in Pokemon for about a decade when the third generation started, because I couldn't catch Meowth, my favorite pokemon at the time! That combined with not being able to import Pokemon from my copy of Silver made me swear off the series for awhile. I revisited the games again a year ago though, and have found that there are some pretty cool pokemon in the generations made since 2. I don't really like a lot of Generation IV pokemon, but Generation III has some really awesome ones. I especially like Garvedoir

I think I actually still like Gen V the best now, mostly due to the game's quicker pace. Faster scrolling text, faster battles, etc. I'm not a fan of the world map or a lot of the monsters in the game, but if I had to go back and play one of them right now, it'd be Gen V all the way.

@Brick

I believe that's just in reference to the designs of the actual Pokemon themselves, at least that's been the common argument I've seen. In which case, it's nostalgia about 90% of the way.

Wow, this topic has gone far afield.

The Pokemon in Pokedex 3D have some pretty cool designs.

@GameDadGrant
Was Blades of Steel your gateway into fighting games?

We used to do that, too.

It's Dog Football week!
