Nostalgia Goggles (I WANT TO SLAP THEM OFF OF PEOPLE) [roundtable]

So I was in Anatomy/Physiology lab today, and one guy in my group noticed what was on my shirt:

He asked, "Hey, is that a metroid?"

I said, "Yeah"

He said, "Cool, Super Metroid is one of my favorite games."

"Mine too! :D " I said.

At this time, I'm thinking, 'Holy crap, a Nintenbro at my college! I should introduce him to Neg-'

"Way better than those new first person shooter Prime ones."

...

SO THAT GOT ME THINKING...

Do nostalgia goggles cause a lot of bias towards newer games in a series?

FOR EXAMPLE:

DISCUSS!!!

Note: I love both Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. I actually enjoy the 2-D Metroids more and think Super Metroid is better, but not 'way better' as the guy smugly said.

I always thought the real strength of FFVII was the character design. If you look at that cast, pretty much every one of them could have fronted their own game. Only Cait Sith seems like he was made to be a side character (but put him in a Vegas Stakes style game, and he's a star).

@kriswrightI can see it now: Aerith's Flower Girl Adventures.

You laugh, but if that was announced at E3 it'd be considered a megaton.

But I think the fact that Jargon has a niece named Aeris proves that she's one of the most memorable characters in the game. You might even be able to argue that she already fronted a game - Final Fantasy VII.

@kriswright Here's a complete list of the spin-off games:

Aerith's Flower Girl Adventures.

So You Think You Can Cuss: Starring Barret Wallace

Red XIV: The Revenge of Red XIII

Slum Fighter: Starring Tifa Lockhart

Airship Assault: Starring Cid Highwind (This one could actually be cool).

Dead or Alive 5: with Yuffie Kisaragi as an exclusive PS3 character (older and with bigger boobs).

Golden Saucer Hold Em Poker: Starring Caith Sith

Cloud Striffe Dating Sim

Oedipus Rex: an interactive play starring Sephiroth (who is too cool for a last name)

Dirge of Cerberus: a third person shooter Starring Vincent Valentine (Never happening)

You missed an opportunity, sms:

Jerry Rice and RedXIII's Dog Football

@kriswright

Take out Jerry Rice and throw in Barrett and I'd be all over that.

And I don't even know how to play American football.

YES!! Our dreams - answered!

Here you go, take your pick:

Personally, I think I like the Jerry Rice one best because the incongruity of those two collaborating multiplies the hilarity. But your mileage my vary.

Either way, times are hard for heroes from the 90s.

@kriswright

Haha, is that Cait on the sidelines?! Boooo, cats!

@Mr_Mustache

Yeah, he's waiting for the inevitable Jose Canseco and Morris' Cat Baseball.

Where is the obvious Michael Vick joke?
08/30/11, 03:23
@PogueSquadron

Too easy. Though I do admit that, in the game, I renamed one of my dogs "Michael Vick".

@Mr_Mustache

Cats are awesome.

My cat says "Boo, mustaches!" True story.

@Shadowlink

You freakin' jerk.

Those spinoffs sound pretty nice. However, I think Square Enix is gonna be steering clear of the numbers XIII and XIV for a while.

.... or at least they should.
08/30/11, 09:22
@kriswright
Awesome, but shouldn't it be "Red XIII?"

Also, the first one works best!

@ploot

I'll fix it in Post.

EDIT: There. Tis done.
