Listen to this amazing orchestrated version of FF3's amazing main theme while reading!

1995's Chrono Trigger shares quite a few similarities with its older brother, 1994's Final Fantasy III (aka Final Fantasy VI). They both share the same translator/writer, Ted Woolsey, who gave Squaresoft's games of that era a particularly quirky voice. They both have similar plot structures, starting off fairly linear then gradually becoming quite open-ended. And they both represent some of the very finest in RPGs, shortly before the genre got drenched in anime cliches.

But if you're one of the many, many people who haven't played FF3 and have played CT, don't expect another CT. This is a Final Fantasy game through and through, and with that comes the staples of the series, for better or for worse: random battles, a rising imperial evil, and a somewhat slow opening chapter. CT has ridiculously good pacing, and FF3's merits are admittedly take a little more time to become evident. But rest assured this is an RPG worth playing.

So what do I like so much about FF3 that makes it worthy of being my favorite RPG (above EarthBound!?) and second-favorite game? EVERYTHING. The soundtrack is the best. The storyline is the best. The cast is the best. The battle system is deep and addictive, the main game is extremely long, involved, and--this word is extremely overused, but it's very fitting for a tale like this--epic. You're looking at a 60-hour goliath of a game with a massive, well-developed cast you'll fall in love with, and an infamous, psychotic villain that's deliciously evil. There's comedy, tragedy, drama, romance, twists, double-crossings, operas, colosseums, banquets and airships, all set to a timeless soundtrack and lovely hand-drawn 16-bit visuals. And the entire, enormous end sequence is the stuff of legends.

It also has a 2-player mode! You can set any of the four playable characters to P1 or P2, and use a second controller to go through the adventure with a buddy.

So in short, don't miss this work of art from the 90's. It's soooo good, you guyyyyyys. C'monnnn...!

And if you're playing it now, feel free to post your progress, etc, in this thread!

Pfft. I didn't even think to use a Phoenix Down on the Ghost Train.

Ah well, Sabin's "Aura Cannon" made short work of it, so all's well that ends well.

I think I basically exclusively used AuraBolt with Sabin. Once I got that, I stuck with it. I forget what I did later in the game though. I know I had Locke rocking some Genji Gloves, and it just made him stupidly, stupidly overpowered.

"One of the best?" THE BEST.

That might be one of the best things in GAMING as a whole.
Trying to think what could compare.. I guess the end of Wind Waker was pretty neat / unexpected.

@Mr_Mustache

I didn't want to go whole hog and make such a pronunciation.

Why are you guys spoilering names of characters who have already been mentioned before...?

When I had a choice, I always had Terra and Locke in my party, for the former's awesome magic and equips, and for the latter's ability to steal. The other two slots would vary from playthrough to playthrough depending on my mood. I believe I used Edgar early on for his tools, since I was more conservative about MP, mostly saving it for heals. I also like Cyan's SwordTechs, I know he's one of the lower-tier characters mostly due to stats, but I find the way his skill works to be interesting. Setzer is up there too, he's a fun character to mess around with. I even like the secret character, GoGo. The relatively low stats make this character not as good as the ones mimicked, but it's still the most versatile character and can be surprisingly useful and fun to use, when raised properly.

Coincidentally, I don't like Sabin, because he's too much like a fighting game character, a type of game I loathe. His commands that require diagonal directions hardly ever work, if I can even remember them. Fortunately he still has good regular attacks, so he has his uses. I also don't like Celes and the other secret character, Umaro, in fact both of these characters are the two I leave behind when entering Kefka's Tower.

@Mop it up

You don't like fighting games? But those are the best games ever.

Haven't played this in a while. I got to a point where I need to re-locate my party members, and I've got a decent amount of them back. I went to get Strago, but got curb-stomped by the enemies in that area.

Any tips?

You need to get Relm back.

@chrisbg99

Got her already. I suspect I'll have to bring her in the party, eh?
07/22/13, 21:50
Yes indeedy.
07/22/13, 21:52
Alright, I'll give it a shot tonight. Thanks!

@GameDadGrant

Aaaaaand you need to send good magic users up the tower if you want to get to the top. You can't use regular attacks at all.

There's also a neat tool for Edgar somewhere up there...

Having just got the Wii VC version I really hope that 12 years from now when the game comes to the Wii U Virtual Console we'll be able to transfer saves up to the newer system.

@pokepal148

Or, you can just play one of the Best Games Ever again!
01/17/15, 22:05
No. No more SNES version. It now needs to be the GBA version. GBA VC, with fixed stats, and all those tasty tasty extras.

@Cryojin

I do really like the fixed stats and extra stages and Espers, but I sure miss the beautiful SNES sound chip (gaming's greatest soundtrack deserves better than janky GBA tunes!) and multiplayer. And some of the old translation.

@Cryojin
@TriforceBun

Fixed stats? What'd they do?
01/18/15, 21:35
I bought the GBA version a bit ago but haven't played it yet. This is one of my fave SNES games so I'm curious about the changes and additions. Time for a new Epic Center?

@Mr_Mustache In the SNES version, the evade stat is glitched and doesn't actually do anything, which means there's no way for physical attacks to miss. Because of this, the "blind" status effect doesn't do anything either, and characters with blind can still hit as accurately as the eagle-eyed characters they apparently are. The M. Block stat instead handles evade for physicals, and can still give you a chance to block physicals if it's high enough. The GBA version fixed this, and it may have changed a couple other things as well like making stamina less useless. I forget.

Sometime.. So much stuff to play on Wii U though!

As for "Evade," -- HA! I didn't even know that. Unbelievable.
I never liked the way Blind looked though; who wants Inky Eyes?!

@TriforceBun I do agree about the soundtrack and the dialogue... but them extras, man....

Oh... I'm almost certain I can assume you've heard the Balance and Ruin Remix Album?
