The latest issue of Nintendo Power reviews the game and on their main review page they say "It's official: you need a Nintendo 3DS." As if this is the game worth buying a 3DS for.

Anand and Panda got into this briefly on the last podcast, and they both seemed to be saying what I think as well, that erm... it's kind of just a port/remake, which isn't nearly as exciting as say, a new Zelda or Mario would be. Yeah it's probably the definitive version of what is considered one of the best games ever made, what with new graphics, sleeker controls, both the original and Master Quest, boss battle, etc. On the other hand, it's still basically Ocarina of Time... again.

On the other hand I was never the biggest OOT fan, so maybe I'm a bit biased. On the other other hand, I wouldn't get super excited about a Metroid Prime or Resident Evil 4 remake either.

Hmm. How many times have I said on the other hand so far?

Anyway, what do you guys think? Is this the first 3DS killer app? Or is it just another port/remake? Or something in between?

I think anybody who has played OoT, and is planning on buying *or already bought) a 3DS just for OoT is flat out insane, or has more money than sense. I mean, I would happily buy OoT 3DS if I had one, but the lineup still isn't offering anything worth the price tag yet.

After 13 years, I'd say there's probably a younger generation that grew up without OoT, targeting that demographic isn't a bad idea at all, but if Nintendo's best effort is going to be a 3D enhanced port of a 13 year old n64 title, we're in trouble.

I think promoting OoT as the 3DS killer ap is a bad idea either way, because the last thing Nintendo needs is validation that a non innovative approach is the best way to do business.

No one is buying the 3DS only to play OoT, that would be crazy. Buying any system just to play one game and then never pick it up again would indeed be certifiably insane.

Luckily the 3DS has lots of good software in the pipeline, so you can play OoT now, and then Kid Icarus, Super Mario, Mario Kart, RE Revelations, lots of good stuff!

I got DOA this month, and I'm getting Williams Pinball, Zelda, and Resident Evil in June. Its going to be quite a month. There's really no reason NOT to own a 3DS if games are your thing.

@Deerock69 Well, I own a 3DS and love it, but... you do realize that the three games you listed all exist elsewhere in some form already? RE probably has a lot of new content, but still.

@Deerock69

A big part of being a killer app is the exclusivity aspect. Halo, Goldeneye, Mario 64 pushed those devices largely because they were quality pieces of software pushing the hardware but also that they were experiences you couldn't get anywhere else. Basically something you could plug in to the phrase "OMG you have to get SYSTEM X to play GAME Y" .The fact you can play OoT today and get a nigh identical experience (and could have 13 years ago) means its just not going to have people saying this about the 3DS.

I consider myself a Nintendo fan and a big Zelda fan and I am left indifferent about OoT 3DS. To be perfectly honest, I don't even know that if I had a 3DS I would pay $30 for it when I already have it on VC (or if I didn't I could for $20 less and great pretty much the same game.

I'm sure it will sell well but it's not pushing a system further in my buying plans.

The 3DS's killer app is most likely going to be the new Mario game.

I would point to Call of Duty and state that it is something of a killer app, too. Dudebros justify the cost of a system in their head plus the purchase of Call of Duty as a justifiable first entry price for the system plus the game. Hanging conditions on my definition does not change my definition. Maybe its the fact that it is available on several other Nintendo systems is leading me to my reluctance to label Zelda a killer app outright, but that doesn't change the fact that many people are going to snap up a system and Zelda on the day it launches.

But it's not "nigh idendtical" to the N64 version, it's A: portable, B: teh graphix!, C: 3-D.

Plus it's Ocarina of Freaking Time, it's not just any ole random game.

Killer Ape I say, KILLER APE.

@deathly_hallows

Those upgrades aren't changing the core game. It's still OoT.

@stephen08

And thank god for that.

What about when the Halo HD remake comes out for the Kinect and its all like 'pew pew pew'! Would you have the same affinity for it at that point or would you have wished for just the HD upgrade?

@stephen08

Yeah, the new Super Mario game will be the 3DS's *true* killer app.

And/or Mario Kart 3DS. I have a feeling that Mario Kart is going to sell more, though...

I'll put it this way. If you own a 3DS right now, OOT 3D is a no-brainier. It's not so much that it is a "killer app" as it is that it's the best full length single player game for 3DS to date. 5 years in 3DS life cycle I wouldn't be sure that OOT 3D is worth buying at full price if you've already played OOT in some form. If you've never played OOT before, sure, it is a killer app as far as handheld gaming is concerned.
05/31/11, 23:24
I don't think there is a port of any game ever made that I would consider a "killer app" a decade and a half after release.

If it were a total remake with new content and totally overhauled graphics... maybe. Even then I don't think I'd consider it such.
05/31/11, 23:38
@Deerock69

I would absolutely hate that. But without totally redoing the game from scratch it would still have the same problem as this remake and thus can't be a killer app.
05/31/11, 23:43
@Oldmanwinter I think if someone did a Metroid -> Zero Mission type remake of Ocarina of Time or the likes, it could be a killer app.

And maybe even a Remake could sort of be a killer app.

Otherwise... eh.

Well, I was stepping away from the main topic to point out that Nintendo isn't making something rabid fans of the original are going to hate, like you claim would happen should Microsoft announce Halo: Kinect Edition.
06/01/11, 02:11
@Deerock69

Yeah if they added more stuff some people might hate it. It's still a lazy port.

@Shadowlink
It took far too long for a killer ape to appear in this thread. Well struck, good sir. Well struck.
