Sony shenanigans (repurposed thread)

This thread was originally about PSN being hacked in 2011, but we thought it fitting to make it a general "Oh Sony" thread to contain rants or news about Sony's war on hackers (and hackers' war on Sony).

The original OP is below.

Update 5/31/11: PSN to be back by Friday

IGN said:
Sony said today it will fully restore PlayStation Network and Qriocity services in the Americas, Europe/PAL territories and Asia - excluding Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea - by the end of this week. Service updates for Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea will be available at a later date.

Full restoration for PSN includes:

- Full functionality on PlayStation Store

- In-game commerce

- Ability to redeem vouchers and codes

- Full functionality on Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3, PSP, VAIO and other PCs

- Full functionality on Media Go
"We have been conducting additional testing and further security verification of our commerce functions in order to bring the PlayStation Network completely back online so that our fans can again enjoy the first class entertainment experience they have come to love," said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, Sony Corporation. "We appreciate the patience and support shown during this time."

End 5/31/11 Update.

Kotaku said:
A security breach in the Playstation Network by still unidentified hackers resulted in stolen personal information, Sony confirmed today.

Sony says while personal information was likely stolen they don't believe credit card numbers were and that they hope to have the Playstation Network service back up within a week.

The news comes more than nine days after the intrusion and six days after Sony shut down both the Playstation Network and Qriocity services in reaction to the breach. Sony says they've hired a "recognized security firm" to conduct a complete investigation into what happened and have taken steps to enhance security and strengthen network infrastructure.
"We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network," Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications for Sony Computer Entertainment of America, wrote on the official Playstation Blog today.

Among the possible information stolen:

Name
Address (city, state, zip)
Country
Email address
Birthdate
PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login and handle/PSN online ID.
"While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken," writes Seybold, "we cannot rule out the possibility."

"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained," Seybold continues.

Sony is encouraging users to be especially aware of potential phishing scams from people using email, phone calls and mail to try and extract more personal or sensitive information from you. Sony also is strongly recommending that you change you password once you're able to log back into the Playstation Network.

"To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports," Seybold wrote

"We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions."

UPDATE
Sony is being sued.

IGN said:
A class action lawsuit was filed against Sony a day after the company publicly admitted that personal information from PlayStation Network was compromised by a security breach. The lawsuit was filed by the Rothken Law Firm today in a California court and alleges Sony "failed to take reasonable care to protect, encrypt, and secure the private and sensitive data."

Yesterday, Sony said it believes an unauthorized person obtained PSN user information, including members' names, addresses, birthdays, and login passwords. The company said there was no evidence that credit card information was stolen, but did not rule out that possibility.

"We brought this lawsuit on behalf of consumers to learn the full extent of Sony PlayStation Network data security practices and the data loss and to seek a remedy for consumers. We are hopeful that Sony will take this opportunity to learn from the network vulnerabilities, provide a remedy to consumers who entrusted their sensitive data to Sony, and lead the way in data security best practices going forward," said Ira P. Rothken an attorney who filed the class action complaint.

"Sony's breach of its customers' trust is staggering. Sony promised its customers that their information would be kept private. One would think that a large multinational corporation like Sony has strong protective measures in place to prevent the unauthorized disclosure of personal information, including credit card information. Apparently, Sony doesn't," commented J.R. Parker, co-counsel in the case.

The lawsuit seeks monetary compensation for the data loss and "loss of use of the Sony PlayStation Network, credit monitoring, and other relief according to proof."

IGN has contacted Sony for comment.

Maybe I'll get $5 bucks out of all of this. Yay me.

@colep53

Sony made their bed, now they gotta sleep in it.

Speaking of which, I think I'm done with Sony after this generation. They've been a big disappointment on the console side for me these past few years. And while I enjoy the PSP, the DS gets far, far more of my gaming time. Speaking of which, I have less and less of nowadays. So yeah. No PS4 or "NGP" for me next gen. I'm done with you, Sony. *dusts hands off*

You know you and I seem to agree on a lot of things. I too am done with sony. I bought a ps3 on impulse when they went to 300 and I have hardly touched it. In fact we moved and its been in its box for months. Just nothing about it excites in the future either. Except the Last Guardian.

I also have a 360, Wii and a 3ds and thats way more than enough. Im hoping that with Nintendo's next hardware I wont need anything else. If I feel like I do however I think it will be a nice gaming computer that I make myself have not had one for years. Ahh might sell everything but nintendo stuff now and get the PC rig. The woman though wont understand, she never does...

Somebody on page one brought it up that Netflix doesn't work, but it does. You need to attempt to log in and let it fail a few times, probably around 3. It's not ideal, but it works in a pinch

I heard about this trick today and I tried it like 20 times (seriously). It didn't work for me.

You know what system Netflix works on, without a hitch?

Yeah. I'm watching Twin Peaks on the Wii right now, since it's not in HD. I've always wanted to watch this series and it is finally available on Netflix.

oh wonderful.

What does it say?

Hey @heliumsky, where have you been? Haven't seen you in a while.

Ridiculous. Now I have to watch my accounts like a hwak and change a bunch of my passwords. Wondaful.
04/27/11, 10:32
When this whole shut down thing first happened, I sorta' wrote it off as "comes with the territory".

After five days, I got kinda' worried for PSN users.

Now? Holy effing shiz. Just... wow.

Sony is officially having a really bad generation.

@Guillaume

And you know what? I used to bitch about that a lot.

Now? Not only am I glad it doesn't, but I'm probably gonna' remove that info from my XBLA account too, just in case.

Yeah, not too happy about this.

I had to get a replacement credit card just a few weeks ago, after the bank called up with some vague explanation about potential fraud from somewhere. When I finally got a new card and pin it wouldn't activate properly and it took me a week and about seven thirty minute phone calls to India to get the damn thing usable again.

Even if I don't get fraudulent charges on my new card because of Sony's incompetence, I guess I'll have to go through that again.

At least I use a different password for every single site and store I go to so nothing else can be affected.

This really sucks, but I'm not done with Sony. PSN will probably be ridiculously secure after this fiasco. Sony's learned their lesson for sure. I could never stop myself from playing new games from the likes of Team Ico, Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, etc. so I'll still be a Playstation fan going forward.

Only Sony...
04/27/11, 18:04
2011...I'll never forget it... it was the year when those grisly internet attacks occured on the Playstation Network...

Soon after, the news was out to the whole world revealing that it was the fault of a secret internet experiment conducted by the international hacker enterprise Anonymous.

The virus broke out on the Playstation Network, and hit the peacful little community with a devasting blow, crippling its very foundation. Not taking any chances, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment ordered a contingency plan: to take legal action against Geohot, as well as apologize to their customers, while offering no definitive answers.

With the whole affair gone public, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment issued an indefinite suspension of the Playstation Network..

Soon its stock prices crashed, and for all intents and purposes, Sony was finished.

I thought you were going to go in a Skynet direction, what with the hacking and distributed networking and SENTIENCE. Oh, wait. That was the Dreamcast. (The PS2 had an emotion chip, though. Like Data.)

Man, this thing was ALL OVER the news. Everyone will forget by tomorrow, but still...

It should be said that at least the console security on the PS3 was fairly impressive. It took a hell of a long time to hack. Or maybe the hackers just weren't targeting them. I dunno.

@GameDadGrant
I'm thinkin' the same thing for Microsoft. Speaking of which...

@Dynablade
You probably shouldn't EVER use your credit card to buy MS points or especially to sign up for Xbox Live. That way lies madness.

@carlosrox Six years from now I'm sure nothing will come of this.

@carlosrox In 2009 Microsoft Xbox 360s had a failure rate of 54% but they're still selling 360s
